Airbnb host gave us a bad review!

airbbbnb · 29/02/2024 10:37

This is the first time I have used Airbnb. So perhaps I'm not versed at how to properly use it.

However, we spent up from 3.5 k for a house for a week and I think we had to pay around 200-250 for cleaning.

This was in a southern European country.

We have two young kids and we had a nice time but had to leave early due to a family emergency.

We stripped all the beds and put all towels and sheets in the washroom.

We cleaned the kitchen and sweeped the floors.

Some rubbish was left in the bins outside, because the weekly collection came after we already left.

We apologised for this and they told us not to worry.

We received a bad review - all around the fact that we left all the bedding and towels in the washroom and that they could see children's finger print marks on a lot of surfaces and on windows. They also mentioned that there was some sand on the floor under the beds. Obviously we didn't sweep well enough.

I don't really understand why I need to pay a cleaning fee if I need to clean windows ?

I'm never using Airbnb again.

That’s ridiculous. I always do the same as you but I’m not hoovering floors or cleaning windows , that’s why we pay a cleaning fee . I’ve used Airbnb over 30 times and thankfully all great reviews . The worse houses have always been in France for some reason , mostly never properly cleaned

Crikeyalmighty · 29/02/2024 23:13

I have big misgivings about Air b n b and the fact that big companies go round buying places up particularly in very popular tourist areas and is partly responsible for real problems in local private rentals- particularly in places like Cornwall , Dorset, Lake District, here in Bath etc - I believe a new rule is being looked at though if I remember correctly that unless it's an annexe or rooms in your house etc they are looking at bringing in a 8 day a month rule-which may mean that it doesn't make sense on the smaller property level - makes more sense to actually do a normal long term let and may stop some second homers doing it as a nice extra when they themselves only use the place 10 times a year etc

I had a bad review because DS had a bad cold and left snot on the sheets. I was very apologetic and offered to replace the sheets by message but she said no and didn't alter the review or comment to update it.

Tatonka · 01/03/2024 01:52

Weird, I've never had to clean. Only request has been to empty bins into main bin in garage. I wouldn't pay for a holiday if they expected me to clean!!

So I have never left a bad review for anything in my life. It's just not my style. I feel like it's bad karma.

You're making life difficult for the rest of us.

Probably karma that you got a bad one if you aren't honest

Honestly this sort of thing is why I would never stay in an Air BnB.

Why on earth would you have to buy some new sheets due to snot? Surely the host will wash them?

You wouldn't buy new sheets for Premier Inn would you so why Air BnB?

And I can't believe the OP paid £3.5k to stay in someone's house for a week only to get this crap.

FGS stay in a proper hotel and get decent service, cooked breakfast and housekeeping as opposed to paying £stupid to stay in someone's house and then get shouted at because you've left a mark or not skivvied for the host.

Honestly these hosts act like they are doing you a favour by letting you pay to stay in their crappy houses. It's ridiculous.

I wish we could write bad reviews on some of our guests! I do some cleaning for “Airbnbs” at the weekend as a sideline. They’re not advertised on Airbnb but some other platform so it’s unfortunate we can’t comment or review the disgusting state A LOT of families leave the properties in! I dread the school holiday families more than the workmen you have an expectation that you can leave the place in such a hovel it’s ok as the cleaners will just clean your filth up after you! It’s like a family of raccoons have stayed there, left shit and piss all over the toilets (there’s a loo brush there, ever used one?!) all your washing up inc the baked on grease and slop on all the baking trays, mud everywhere, dog hair all over the furniture and bedding, rubbish and food filled bins after you’ve taken out a filled bin bag and can’t be bothered to replace it just fill the bin up instead, the list goes on! You wouldn’t want to read the reviews I do in my head of your skankiness either!

soupfiend · 01/03/2024 06:56

What time did you arrive OP, to be able to wash and dry sheets before using them to go to bed? Lucky there was washing powder or did you also have time to nip out and buy some?

I do wonder about this, I never clean (have never had instructions to), but I leave the place tidy and of course clean toilets. All of my reviews say how tidy I have left the place, one person also sent me another private message about how appreciative he was. It did make me wonder what state people leave them in because to me it's just normal. I'd do the same in a hotel.

If there was a tumble dryer you can strip, wash and change a bed in little over an hour.

airbbbnb · 01/03/2024 07:44

They had washing powder. They had a few things for us in general, which we really appreciated.

Clearly we arrived at a time that allowed me to wash and dry sheets. So not sure why that's being questioned.

I would never pay what the OP paid but there are plenty of very good Airbnb places at prices lower than most hotels.

How much would you have to pay for a hotel that provided even a fraction of the space you can get in an Airbnb house or apartment? You don't get any cooking facilities, no outside space, no comfy sofa (unless you are staying in an expensive hotel).

I can cook my own lovely breakfast at the time me and DH choose not when a hotel deems suitable OR we can go out and eat and have far more choice than most hotels offer and at a less ridiculous price.

@fedupwithbeingcold

No it's not !!

The place was great, yes the sheets smelled bad, but I could rectify it.

Overall the place was really nice and another family will have a good time there.

I looked at the overall picture when I left my review and decided that the hosts had been really really lovely to us and the sheets / internet situation could be lived with and it wasn't worth leaving a bad review for that. So no it was not dishonest !!!!

But it was?!!

I have worked as a chambermaid in a hotel and also cleaned holiday homes. So many people leave their accommodation in a disgusting state. I was amazed just what a state some people could leave a room in after just 1 or 2 nights.

The holiday homes were an eye opener. Again, amazement often that they could make a place as filthy and messy in a week. Obviously no attempts to clean up any crumbs or spilt drinks at the very least.

I would love to see some of the guests' homes because if they are that lazy and dirty I doubt they will be any different at home.

I have only ever received good reviews and a few times the host has thanked me for leaving their property so clean and tidy. A host in France actually sent me and DH a letter thanking us and saying we left the gite cleaner than her cleaner does!

That’s what we do and we always have reviews on how tidy we leave the house and that they will welcome us and recommend us . This is just a few . We also host and until now we only had to leave a bad review and it was because I think they filmed porn on the house 🤮

Airbnb host gave us a bad review!

We used VRBO one year. The guy brought in 3 cleaners when we left. We paid the cleaning fee. We cleaned as much as possible before they came as well. We where there for 2 weeks. We got an awful review because we left some 'plastics'. I think he meant some carrier bags in the kitchen.... and because I tool the sofa cover off so it could be washed... we had been there for 2 weeks..why wouldn't you wash it!?

So I have never left a bad review for anything in my life. It's just not my style. I feel like it's bad karma.

I left a glowing review. Even though there were some issue. The sheets were sticky and smelled really bad and I washed them before we slept in the beds- same with blankets. It's unacceptable really, but I didn't mention it to the hosts I also didn't write it in the review.

In addition, the intent was rubbish.

Not happy about the situation and will never use it again. I wish I could delete my glowing review. But I can't. I still wouldn't leave a bad review but I shouldn't have left a good one.

This is absolutely ridiculous behaviour - that's essentially making up a fake review.
If you can't being yourself to write a legitimate true review (it's shocking you had to rewash the bedding!), don't leave a review at all!
You're just making a mockery of the review system - reviews future travellers will rely on when booking their trips!

rookiemere · 01/03/2024 08:55

This is why we tend to stay in apart-hotels.

Additional space and means DH can watch tv in the living room when I go to bed earlier, but neutral impersonal surroundings with no curtain twitching or judgement if we don't clean the windows.

Cost wise it's somewhere in between an apartment and a hotel, but as there are no additional cleaning costs and sometimes breakfast is thrown in, these days it's often on a par with an Airbnb.

justasking111 · 01/03/2024 09:09

Friend is a host she's cleaned up some grim messes, never mentioned them though. I think she has left only one bad review.

On the other hand she's seen some odd reviews, church bells was one the property adjoins the church clearly shown. Early morning birds. The weather.

Some hosts are amateurs. Some rely on feedback from cleaners so it's second hand information.

I've stayed abroad self catering some that were fantastic, others grubby. These booked through travel companies.

NotVWoolf · 01/03/2024 09:28

We used to use Airbnb and stayed in some mediocre and some fabulous places but then they introduced cleaning the house as well as an extortionate cleaning fee. It’s one or the other surely. I’ll leave it tidy but I’m not cleaning a house if I’m on holiday so it’s hotels for us now. And the total win of hotels is no self-catering and cooking either. 🙂

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 01/03/2024 09:38

We only had one in Wales which made a big deal about leaving it exactly as found or a £500 fine. Other than that, what we have naturally done has been ok, as our reviews are positive. I do think some are getting over priced though. They don't quite offer hotel services but some do think they can charge more ...

Because it can't be washed and put back on before the next guests arrive is why. I'm.sure sofa covers aren't washed once a fortnight.

Same. I just follow whatever the stated house rules are and make sure we don’t leave any trash behind, things that do not belong there, no obvious marks or crumbs. I do a quick once over while DH and kids are getting in the car making sure the place is tidy and nothing is left behind, text the host, thanking them and off we go.

We’ve saved hundreds of pounds staying in an Airbnb vs a hotel. Our last trip was £300 less to stay at an Airbnb than the hotel we usually stay at and we were 5 minutes drive from where we were going vs 15- 20 minutes and was in a little village so walking distance to parks, restaurants, cafes, and shops. Children had their own room while we were in the master. Lovely kitchen with everything needed. The place looked like a show home tbh and much better than the hotel we stayed at. Cleaning fee wasn’t unreasonable either.

I use Airbnb because it is usually cheaper than a hotel. If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t use it.

I think if you are a clean and tidy person you will leave a holiday place clean and tidy.

It would never cross my mind to make loads of mess and not clean it up. Likewise to leaving unwashed dishes or not cleaning the loo or wiping the sink round.
