How to get calpol into DS

Sorry posting for traffic! 3 year old isn’t well and needs calpol but is refusing. If I use the syringe he spits it out straight away and cries. Any tips on how to get it into him?

I noticed he was burning up last night, then this morning still the same, he feels very hot but I think he might be feeling cold as he wants the blanket around him. He has no appetite, very lethargic and keeps falling asleep which is unusual for him as he’s normally running all over 24/7. He is non verbal so can’t tell me exactly how he is feeling. I went to check his temp but the thermometer is broken so waiting for DP to get back from the shop with a new one

In petit filous

They are so sweet the taste of calpol disappears

AnEmbarrasmentofWitches · 29/02/2024 08:42

Or in squash. Or strawberry milk.

good luck x

My daughter will only take it mixed with a small glass of milk

DorothyZ · 29/02/2024 08:43

Have you tried a spoon?

Dantiger · 29/02/2024 08:45

@DorothyZ yeah that’s even worse😞 he won’t even let me put the spoon into his mouth

A tip I read when my third was refusing it was to put the syringe between their teeth and cheek and squirt quickly and then somehow they are more likely to swallow automatically, like a reflex. But I appreciate even that will be tricky with a 3 year old. But also, even though he does sound ill poor thing, remember that calpol just helps lessen the symptoms (compared to antibiotics which they do need to take). So if he ends up just letting the bug he has work it’s course he might feel more rubbish but he won’t fail to get better because you can’t get any calpol into him.

If you're desperate, you can get paracetamol suppositories. They're the norm for young children in many countries, eg France.

Strawberry ice cream sauce
On yogart . On anything runny that he loves .

Just took his temp it was 35.9

His temp is 35.9? That's really quite low!

As an aside, my DD absolutely hated the taste of Calpol and point blank refused it too. We bought Nurofen and that went in much easier. Maybe worth a try if you haven't already?
Hope your little one feels brighter soon.

Nohousemove · 29/02/2024 09:12

35.9 is low. With a low temperature and being ill you need to take him
straight to A and E and tell then you think he may have spesis. Don’t wait around. Getting there quickly is very important.

Lovemusic82 · 29/02/2024 09:19

He doesn’t ‘need’ calpol.
Do get him checked over by a GP though incase he needs antibiotics. I know it’s not easy, my dd was awful at getting medicine into, she’s severely autistic, she has survived glandular fever, tonsillitis, chicken pox etc… without calpol and only had antibiotics for scarlet fever (which was hard work). She’s almost 18 now and still won’t take medication unless she’s in a lot of pain.

Sunshineclouds11 · 29/02/2024 09:22

I would get him checked with that temp.

When our DS was 3 I had to wrap him in a towel/blanket, lie him across my legs tilt his head back and put the Calpol in.
Had to be cruel to be kind and he soon forgot about it.

goodkidsmaadhouse · 29/02/2024 09:44

None of my kids ever take calpol and it’s never been a problem - but a low temp might be. I hope he’s ok OP.
