Feeding newborn

Currently hospital with my newborn and feel confused about feeding! I can't really remember from last time, but should I he be giving him a feed even if he is settled? He had 20-30ml at around 12:30am ish.

He was stirring a little bit then but I think that's because he had done a poo, so I changed him and now he is a happy little man sleeping.

Help me remember Smile

They need to feed about every three hours when they are tiny, iirc. Congratulations xx

Just to add, I had to wake DD up because she had jaundice and wanted to sleep, but if they're healthy a newborn will probably wake up from hunger about that interval.

Congratulations on your little one OP!

I had my daughter 3 weeks ago and the midwives told me that in the first 24 hours a newborn can expect to be fed 4-5 times as they will be sleepy (this was not the advice when I had my son in 2021 - it was every 3 hours - so this was very new to me!), but don't let them go much over 4-5 hours between feeds during this initial period.

After 24 hours, they need to be feeding closer to every 3 hours. 20-30ml is a good amount for one of the first feeds 😊

Can you press your buzzer and just check in with the midwives and what they recommend? X

My baby is 4 months and breastfed and we were told when he was newborn if it’s been 3 hours from the start of the last feed to wake them to feed. I would assume the same for formula.

Congratulations on your snuggly new baby

I didn't have a time on mine, I just fed them when they woke for a feed.
They will let you know when they're hungry, don't worry.

I was told not to let them go more than two hours between feeds and three was the max interval.

Feed on demand look for hunger cues and until back to birthweight wake to feed going no longer than 3-4hrs between feeds

You can't rely on this. I followed it and my baby didn't take on enough milk. Another mum from my antenatal class had a similar experience and her baby became quite dehydrated and unwell.

It's OK and sometimes necessary to wake a baby to feed them.

I have a two week old. It's every 3 hours, 4 at a maximum, then we was told to wake them for a feed, was told to strip them off if sleepy.
Congratulations btw! It's amazing how you forget everything isn't it !!

Every 3 hours for a newborn. Mine would sleep 6-8 hrs as I was going on feeding cues which she was too tired to give. Ended up difficult to wake and lost too much weight. Once back to birth weight in a few weeks then feed on demand
