Swollen lip itchy hands?

scaredasdmum · 28/02/2024 23:10

The obvious answer is allergic reaction but I have no known allergies and haven’t eaten or done anything different or new.

My hands started itching about an hour ago and haven’t stopped, they’re literally raw from itching, and I noticed my top lip feels strange and is tingling, looked in the mirror and it’s completely swollen, but only the top lip!

Kinda making me want lip fillers… but on a serious note, could this just be a weird allergic reaction or is this something to get checked out? And if so tonight or GP tomorrow?

Have you been chopping any vegetables? I get oral allergy syndrome, which is related to hay fever, from eating raw apples, cherries, bean sprouts and sometimes green beans. Might also affect hands I guess.

Didimum · 28/02/2024 23:17

Take an antihistamine. If it dies down then I don’t think you need to take further action. Myriad things can irritate the body.

dothehokeycokey · 28/02/2024 23:19

Last time that happened to me it was the red onion food flavouring in a packet of special Aldi crisps so I avoid anything with red onion flavouring in now.

Was so random and has never happened again with anything else.

This happened to me and was the start of anaphylactic shock. Exactly the symptoms you described. Please take an antihistamine and be prepared to go to A&E of it gets any worse.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest! I get it from kiwis and melon - the mouth thing and the hand thing.

Second taking an antihistamine so see if that works

scaredasdmum · 28/02/2024 23:33

No haven’t been chopping anything, and don’t have any antihistamines and no way to get any right now because the bloody car broke down today!

I get this from peanuts, chilli powder and mussels.

Im told to be cautious as intolerances can become serious allergies.

Rachie1973 · 28/02/2024 23:34

Cold water plunge for hands and iced water sips helps me.

Please look at this post. One of the things it lists is sudden swelling of the lips plus you have itchy hands.

I’ve had this in reaction to a sting and had to go to A&E for steroids and intravenous antihistamines.

Are you also allergic to soy milk?

Winter2020 · 29/02/2024 00:02

When I was at uni a friend had an anaphilactic reaction to prawns. He had to get the attention of his housemates by banging on the floor while in his room.

What have you eaten? Some foods are more common allergens.

Have you been gardening- could also be allergy to poisonous plant?

No idea, never drink it.

It’s not an allergy as such, it’s more a reaction. OAS doesn’t cause anaphylaxis. Just an itchy mouth and sometimes swollen lips. It’s annoying but not life threatening.

scaredasdmum · 29/02/2024 00:10

I had fajitas tonight but not spicy, and it was about 8pm. Nothing different in them. This is my lip right now

I have OAS, came out of nowhere aged 20. Difficult to find a health professional that has even heard of it. Itch from apples and other raw fruits, sneezing as I type from the early trees - silver birch - and swollen throat from soy milk, which is frightening.

I used the word "allergic" when I should have said "affected by".

In my opinion you should seek medical help. Have you dialled NHS? (Sorry if already suggested/done) that photo is alarming.
Have a serious think about anything at all that might have changed. If not foods, what about detergents etc? Fajitas probably contain chillis and there are so many different ones you might have encountered one you are allergic to. If you insist on waiting until morning, definitely call your GP and try for an emergency appointment or can you get a phone appointment?

Yes, silver birch trees are my nemesis too!

OAS is better known now I think, I have 2 colleagues who also suffer.

Will make sure so avoid soy milk, thanks for the tip. I’m fine with tofu though, which is also made of soy.

How are you today OP? That pic is indeed worrying, my lips never swell that much with OAS.
