Nursery and toilet training

Recently toilet training DS who is 3.

He seems to have really clicked with it at home and we can now go the whole time at home with no accidents pretty much all of the time, even when out and about at the weekend etc...

However, he is still having multiple accidents at nursery sometimes 3+ other times just the 1.

This has been going on for weeks now and doesn't seem to really be improving much.

I have read online that they may not be ready if still having lots of accidents but he seems very ready at home and out with us, just not at nursery. Do I just persevere and let nursery deal with the accidents there given he's not having any at home.

I doubt going back to nappies would even work as even at night now (when he still wears a nappy) he will wake up and ask to go to the toilet instead of using his nappy a lot.

The problem at nursery is that kids are having too much fun and not listening to their bodies. Will the nursery staff work with you? When she was learning, DD's teachers had to remind her every half an hour to check whether she needed the toilet, but eventually they build up more of an awareness and go when they need to.

Yes I suspect there is not enough reminding going on. He's very good at home he will tell me pretty much every time now without needing to be reminded.

I do remind him every half hour if we are out doing something fun and he's not said for a while (like at soft play or something).

They tell me most of the time that he just misses the potty I.e. he'll tell them and it's too late by the time they get him to the bathroom.

They initially suggested that I maybe put a nappy/pull up nappy over his underwear but I just feel like this would be such a backwards step when he's doing so well everywhere else.

I agree that children are often too distracted at nursery, or they don’t want to leave their toy or activity because they’re enjoying it and don’t want anyone else to take it while they’re gone.

What’s the procedure at nursery? Does he have to tell an adult when he needs to go or is he supposed to just take himself? Whatever it is, try and replicate it at home and be careful not to use too many prompts to use the toilet at home so that he knows it’s his job to think about it.

Definitely persevere!

Since he's doing so well at home, I would not want to put him in a nappy at nursery. He'll probably crack it there too very soon! Sounds like he just needs a little more prompting

Happened to us too. He was too engrossed in playing. Our nursery started to implement the same toilet breaks every day. This worked wonders. He'd have to go at certain times and the accidents stopped.

I could have written this myself - has there been any improvement and did you do anything in particular?

Yes he's doing much better actually thank you! We tried a couple of things, namely buying him a "special" potty for at nursery that he chose with his favourite characters on and also letting him choose his own special stickers for there too that he gets when he goes. It made him much more keen to go on his special potty and get one of his special stickers too!

Still the odd accident but he's doing much better!
