Abusing antibiotics

Hey, I'm probably not posting in the right place and I probably am being unreasonable but my anxiety is playing havoc and I just need to talk about it to prevent myself from replaying it repeatedly in my head all night 🙈

I'll try keep it short, DS 16 has recently had a chest infection, he felt better but over the last 2 days developed a cough again and he felt pretty rough this morning so I took him to get checked over due to previous history of numerous bouts of pneumonia when he was younger and I know DS became forgetful towards the end of this antibiotics course so it took him a couple of days longer than usual to finish the course, this is despite me reminding him 🙄 anyway when I mentioned that to the doctor today she said she wont give him more antibiotics due to him abusing them and then went on a rant about it. Thankfully his chest was clear but now I'm overthinking the whole exchange and that she'll write on his notes that he abused his medication and it will effect him getting treatment in the future. DH said i shouldn't have mentioned it but I'm not one for telling lies and now my anxiety is through the roof now 😔 I'm being ridiculous aren't I?

That is very harsh of the doctor - a few forgotten doses by someone who is trying to take them properly is not abuse.

You are suffering from a lot of respiratory infections. Do you have a smoker or open fires in your house? Do you live in an area of high air pollution?

DH is a smoker but smokes outside, no open fire and we do live on a very busy road, so im assuming the air wouldn't be the best. We was told years ago that DS likely has scarring on his lung due to the bouts of pneumonia, as each time he gets a chest infection its always on the same lower left side.
We also recently moved into a new rented property and it soon became apparent that we have high humidity which causes mould to grow, the doctor we saw previously said this is likely contributing to our ill health. I do try to keep on topof it and clean it off as soon as it grows but sometimes it comes back very quickly despite lots of measures to try and counteract it. We're waiting for the landlord to sort it, the doctor did sat that they can write a letter if they fail to deal with it properly. DS does usually get a chest infection each winter though but the mould won't be helping.

Good lord both you and the doctor overreacted to a non issue.

Poor kid

This is how my brain works, it's very exhausting 😔

What a load of tosh. GPs should not speak to their patients in this manner, esp when you consider the power imbalance already at play. Substance abuse FFS

Can you move to a different doc at the surgery?

Oh so he just took 2 extra days worth, did the label say 5 days only, was it a full pack, maybe the research shows a 5 day course is better.

No, It was just a 5 day course in the packet but it just took him 7 days to finish it, so he didn't take any extra. I would have though that the word abuse would be more associated with taking more tablets then he should have but that's not the case at all

Don’t worry OP this won’t be recorded in any way that could affect his future treatment- it would be completely unethical (& nonsensical) to do so. Sure she could have used this as an opportunity to educate a 16 year old on just why it’s important to take antibiotics as prescribed but using the word ‘abuse’ is absolutely ridiculous in this context.

Even smoking outside is far from ideal to be honest.

Anyway onto your concern, of course he’s not abusing antibiotics and your GP was ridiculous. It’s fine to say to your son he needs to be responsible about taking antibiotics as prescribed but it’s not abuse.

BabyHaribo · 28/02/2024 20:35

Abuse was a silly term to use. The dr could have used this as a chance to educate your DS (and you?!) about how important it is to take antibiotics as prescribed. Set an alarm if necessary.

DS grandchildren may not have access to the healthcare we do, simply due to lack of antibiotics which is scary

I've ended up on antibiotics twice in 4 weeks. I end up on antibiotics pretty much every 6 months due to a chronic issue I can't get a referral for.

Antibiotics aren't drugs to abuse, why on earth would anyone be after antibiotics for fun?
