To want to know if police trace IP addresses

I've had a report made to social services about me claiming that I am using drugs and alcohol. I work as a teacher and think this could be a previous student that has recently been excluded. This has caused me a great deal of stress.
I have reported to the police however they do not seem interested. Is there anyway social services can trace the report via an IP address so that the police can charge with harrassment?

Police can trace IP addresses but are very unlikely to do so in these circumstances

No, people would be less likely to report valid cases if they were.

Police will only become involved in investigations in extreme situations of repeated issues, at the behest of SS

The police use something called lawful intercept with communications providers but this is only used for security reasons usually for "people of interest"

IP addresses are not as person specific as people think they are. Often they don't even reveal locations. What if it came from a library? Do you honestly think they are going to trawl through hours of CCTV and interview every person who went to the library? Honestly, forget the IP route. The police and social services aren't going to waste time on that.

Children's services do not have access to IP addresses. As mentioned the police do but would not trace over a one off. It would have to be a sustained campaign of harassment.

SantaBarbaraMonica · 27/02/2024 21:28

IP addresses are not always specific. And are masked by VPNs. But they can be traced, just the info you get might tell you nothing. I doubt police would trace for you unless for a criminal investigation.

Thanks everyone, good point - I'd hate for anymore resources to be wasted. It's been recorded as a malicious report. There have also been some pretty unpleasant messages sent to me. All logged, our SLT at school haven't been supportive and I guess this leave me feeling quite vulnerable.

They do in emergency situations if someone is in danger. I am thinking of an incident where they turned up at my home within minutes.

If you think someone has made false allegations then it could be regarded as harassment so you are within your right to report to the police and it will then be up to them if they investigate. NSPCC advise if report has been made through them you can request any information they hold about you.

ImnotadickheadIpromise · 27/02/2024 21:35

Probably not. I divulged a little too much info about myself online (on a football forum of all things) and then had a hate page set up on Tumblr about me for literally no reason. Friends managed to do some detective work and discover who was behind it but although police took the initial reports seriously they weren’t actually able to track down the person who was responsible
