posted in menopause but no replies.

I started HRT less than a month ago. Gel and Utrogestan for the 2nd part of my cycle.

I started the Utrogestan a few days ago and I don't think I have know tiredness like that before.

Is this a common side effect? Will the coil be better and make me less of a zombie? I don't think I can do this another cycle. Help.

When do you take it? I take it before bed and it sends me to sleep, which is a plus for me. But I haven't tried a coil so don't know how it compares.

8 pm. I sleep better on it but the tiredness doesn't appear to wear off at all..

I originally got my mirena because of heavy bleeding but kept having them for the progesterone part of HRT so I cant help as I've never taken tablets. I've other friends who have had the mirena for the progesterone part.

I think having mirena is a marmite situation- you either love it or hate it and I love mine. I had spotting and low level period pain (the pain you can forget when you're doing something) for 6weeks after insertion but nothing since. Not sure that helps or not, sorry.

I do need the progesterone as part of my HRT. Not bothered if tablet of coil. But the tablets (Utrogestan) make me incredibly sleepy. all day long. So I wondered if the coil which works on a lower dose and locally would be a better option.

How long do you take the tablets for? I didn't do well with them so my doctor changed my schedule. I now take a lower dose but for more days and no longer have issues.

However, I think I may have needed to go through a few cycles first to make sure it wasn't just a temporary impact.

When I started HRT I had regular check ups for the first six months and then two monthly once my prescription was "settled" before I moved to a standard repeat prescription as it's quite normal to need to tinker with the prescription to get it right for you.

Wheresthescissors · 27/02/2024 10:25

I think since you've only taken it for a few days your body might adapt. I would personally try this month and one more and then try something else if it doesn't improve. Unless it's unbearable.

I need progesterone as part of my HRT.
I refused a coil so I've got Evorel conti patches.
I was very tired and nauseous for the first 2 months presumably because it was getting into my system but I'm fine now

I had some bad side effects on Utrogestan taken orally. I quite liked the sleepy part but it gave me horrendous breat pains and PMS. My nurse said it could be used vaginally and I have been doing it this month. I feel so much better. I slept better before but all other symptoms dissapeared.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 27/02/2024 10:43

Utrogestan cured menopausal insomnia, I love it! I now have a Mirena (since January) due to hyperplasia (it was sold to me as 'better'). I now don't sleep more than 3 or 4 hours at a time, am constantly tired and haven't stopped bleeding yet. Safe to say I'm not a fan of the Mirena, and it will be removed next month! I need to sleep to feel well and cope with my life!

Yep happened to me only a. Few weeks ago. I was told that my coil keeps the progesterone locally and there were other symptoms I was having potentially due to not enough progesterone - principally anxiety, exhaustion which has run throughout my time on hrt and unreliable sleep I was told to trial oral progesterone - same prescription as you - for a month and I would 'know if I got on with it. I felt great for the first two days and took it at night - it was lovely dropping off at night and I felt like anxiety was very much quelled in the morning. However by day 3 I could hardly move in the day time - so much so I assumed I was unwell. I spent about 5 days on the sofa thinking covid or something. Once I stopped taking it I was no longer as exhausted so I haven't gone back. Sounds like we had a similar experience. I still do wonder if I had covid or something, but nothing was showing in the tests and short of realising I didn't smell very well for a day or two, I didn't have any other covid symptoms. I'm not sure whether to try it again just in case.

BirdsofPrey1 · 27/02/2024 14:39

Thanks all. I will stick to it for a little while but if no improvement, I may switch to the coil. It's not tiredness or fatigue but I am like a zombie. It's a while different level of having no energy

Would be great if you cd update on this. Zombie is how I felt. I'm in two minds about trying again so I'd be interested to know if it improves for you. Hope it gets better.

faustus5 · 16/03/2024 21:08

@BirdsofPrey1 did you carry on with it and if so did things improve? I'm thinking of restarting it, to give it one last try.

BirdsofPrey1 · 17/03/2024 07:12

it got better in the 2nd week of my Utrogestan. I am currently in my gel-only phase. Decided to give it a bit more time but if it starts again when I take it, I will make an appointment. Not sure if it takes maybe a bit longer for things to settle.
