To not wash my bedding?

popapoppadum · 26/02/2024 23:40

I have bad night sweats every night due to medication I'm taking. I physically can't keep up with the amount of washing it's causing, my laundry pile is out of control and it's really getting me down. Is there any way of giving bedding a refresh without needing to wash it every day? If I leave it, it smells horrible and musty immediately.

And by night sweats I mean, completely drenched, the bed is wet kind of night sweats.

Can you get a few sleeping bag liners and sleep in them? It would be less laundry than a complete set of bedding every night.

SgtJuneAckland · 26/02/2024 23:43

Can you put a flat sheet on top of the fitted sheet and another under the duvet? Two sheets is easier to wash and dry than full sets of bedding.
Also we got fully zipped waterproof sheets there really soft and not rustly, will also protect your nature's

What do you wear to sleep?

Could you just get a lot of bottom sheets, change those every day and then wash them all once a week? Then, during the day, hang your duvet somewhere to air?

spanishviola · 26/02/2024 23:44

Have you tried temperature controlling sheets and pillowcases? I have a cooling sheet and use linen bedding, both help.

strugglingnd · 26/02/2024 23:46

Maybe try towels to soak up the sweat . I was very lucky that my menopause was so easy in comparison.

DorisDoesDoncaster · 26/02/2024 23:47

Flat sheets above and below you, on top of your fitted sheet and beneath your duvet will help ease the burden. Perhaps a cotton towel between the fitted sheet and the flat sheet beneath you.

theduchessofspork · 26/02/2024 23:48

Could you get a 5 day supply of top and bottom sheets and one fresh pillowcase a day and just wash the lot at the weekend along with the duvet cover. I don’t think there’s going to be anything you can do to refresh them.

theduchessofspork · 26/02/2024 23:49

Plus I think you need a waterproof mattress cover else you will end up having to replace that.

Sorry to hear this - it sounds really hard.

popapoppadum · 26/02/2024 23:50

I generally have to sleep with just pants on otherwise I wake up with sopping wet clothes. We have a waterproof mattress protector down but haven't tried any of the 'cooling' bedding stuff as it's generally pricer than we afford. But maybe I need to suck it up and pay the money!

I don’t have any suggestions other than to say it can be shit being a woman and I feel for you!

GrumpyPanda · 27/02/2024 00:23

Sounds rough. But could you try the other way around? That is, switch to an ultra-light blanket or even just sheets and combine with pajamas? Ideally flannel, they're better at soaking up sweat, and easier than changing bedding.

Shetlands · 27/02/2024 00:39

I had drenching night sweats during my menopause and the tactic I ended up using was to lay on a bath towel and then replace it with another during the night if necessary (I'd always wake at least once). I also had a towel on the pillow. Beside the bed I kept a wet flannel and hand towel and wiped myself down with those to cool myself off. In the morning I'd leave the bed open for airing and mist the top and bottom sheets with some febreeze, which would be dry by night time. I don't think I washed the sheets or towels more than once a week. The main thing was to keep them aired during the day.

SuperstarDeejay · 27/02/2024 00:44

I agree pull covers back, spritz some freshener on, open the window. If that doesn't do the trick, wear clothes to bed.

BreadInCaptivity · 27/02/2024 00:51

It might be counter intuitive but what works for me is wearing thick pj's, the type styled as loungewear (so like a sweatshirt and jogging bottoms) with a very thin summer duvet.

What I've found is sleeping with less nightclothes I get cold - cuddle into the higher tog duvet and wake up awful and sweating (and then cold as I am wet).

This way the thick pj's keep me warm to get to sleep and also absorb the sweats. I keep a clean pair next to the bed I can quickly change into in the night if needed.

What I find is that I wake when the pj's start to get wet but before it hits the bedding. So just (groggily) change the pj's and I can get back to sleep in a clean bed. Shower in the morning and throw the pjs in the wash (much easier than changing the bedding.

I have cooling bedding. Apparently.

Not noticed any difference. Don't waste your money.

Youtoldmeonce · 27/02/2024 01:08

Have you had a look at incontinence bedding? Should has a Kylie sheet which should stop the sweat soaking through.

PiggieWig · 27/02/2024 02:37

Actually, that’s a good point @BreadInCaptivity . I get worse night sweats when I snuggle right into the duvet. I don’t like anything round my legs but I have long sleeved, thick jersey nighties that could easily be changed in the night and flung in the daily wash.

MariaVT65 · 27/02/2024 03:37

Put a waterproof mattress protector and bedsheet on as normal. Then if you can, put another mattress protector and bedsheet on top of that. Then just remove the layers when needed.

It may not reduce the amount of washing but may at least reduce the need to wash/change sheets every single day.

KindleGirlie · 27/02/2024 04:23

Could you hang your duvet over a stair bannister or even outside every day? I’m poorly at the moment and sleeping it off so my bedding is soaked in sweat, it’s horrid so I feel for you.

5YearsLeft · 27/02/2024 04:32

I get really bad fevers with my illness sometimes and I just give up and sleep on a towel or two (I’m too weak to change my stupid bedding, sigh - it gets changed on Tuesday when the cleaner comes).

Naptimeagain · 27/02/2024 04:37

I used big bath towels for this - you do still have to wash them, but you're not making up the bed every day, so much handier.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 27/02/2024 04:39

What are you currently sleeping on/under??

Op, I would invest in a good-sized absorbent bath towel and lay that on your bed.
