How often/many breaks do you take if you have a desk based job?

Started new role which is sat in front of a computer all day. Entitled to a 30 min break which people seem to take around lunch time. Would I be unreasonable to take a 10 min break every hour or so? I’m finding it so boring and not at all healthy.
What is considered as ok?

I have one break, which is my half hour lunch. I do however get up from my desk quite regularly. I have to walk to see other people to discuss things, to pass paperwork, to the photocopier, etc. if I’ve been sat for a while I might decide I need to walk about and think what can I do / needs doing. If there isn’t anything I might walk to the toilet and make a cup of tea so I’m moving about a bit.
I wouldn’t assume I’m due additional breaks, 10 mins every hour would be about 90 mins across the day. Just make sure you get up roughly once an hour to get some water, make a drink, take some paperwork somewhere. maybe it adds up to the same but an employer would view it differently to someone asking for 10 mins break every hour.

10 mins every hour...you'll be on a permanent break if you try that!

A minute or 2 an hour to change position & breaknfro the screen is a required on a DSE assessment and maybe a 5 min trip for a wee and a cuppa every couple of hours is probably the most you can reasonable expect to be permitted.

Hardly! My work station locks down for 5 mins every 55 minutes. If I am inactive then it resets, so if I made a coffee and hung the laundry out 10 minutes before the official break then it would reset.

I get up, go to the loo, do a few things and then settle back down.
I don't tend to take an official longer break, but some of the breaks are longer than 5 mins (pop to the village shop, chop some veggies or something).

I work alone in a brain intensive job. It's very flexible. It works for me.

A 10 minute break EVERY hour?

So if you work 6 hours you think you're entitled to an extra hours paid break 🤔😂🤣

If you don't like the job then leave and find something else.

YABU.

You are aware this isn’t that uncommon?

Most workplaces actively promote this as a productive way to work

Chickenwing2 · 27/02/2024 14:14

In the office I typically go to the toilet/go to get water/make a cup of tea about once an hour.

At home I take breaks more frequently as no one is there to see/judge. As long as my work is done it's not a problem.

Vonesk · 27/02/2024 14:19

15 minute morning

30 minute Lunch

15 minute afternoon.

Is the norm.

I find ' breaks' are a controversial subject in some places and it wildly abused.
Its best not to draw attention to them, just go.

Well any office I've worked in HAS encouraged its employees to get up and do something else for a few minutes - but still working, just doing other things - not having extra breaks 🤷‍♀️🤣

WonderingAboutBabies · 27/02/2024 14:55

I get up from my desk once every hour (unless in meetings) just to stretch my legs. Every now and again one of these will include going to the loo, getting a drink/snack, and taking my dog into the garden. I'll often make him a puzzle to keep him occupied as well.

Half an hour-an hour for lunch depending on busyness.

Compulsory 15 minute playtime break in the garden with my dog in the pm as well...

BeaRF75 · 27/02/2024 14:59

10 minutes every hour is way too much.
I can easily be at my desk 4 or 5 hours before I realise I haven't had a loo break, but in that time I probably manage a couple of minutes to get a coffee or two. Just stand up to use the phone or read something, if you have to.

Too much for you, maybe.
Taking 10 minutes every hour to move around is perfectly reasonable and acceptable for many.

I take as many breaks as I need. I've hit a lull in terms of workload at the moment, so I'm taking advantage as when it's busy, it can be full on - meetings non-stop and then having to work late. Even then, I will sometimes Teams message and say I need a 5 minute comfort break - people are fine about this.

Jamandtoastfortea · 27/02/2024 18:11

10 mins break is a lot, but just make sure you get up to go to loo, grab a drink etc as needed. I also often stand up when talking about an issue with a colleague, or walk about when I’m on a phone call. I also stretch when waiting at printer etc. There are lots of practical ways to stretch your body and eyes as needed.

BillyNotQuiteNoMates · 27/02/2024 20:57

I start between 7.30am and 8.30am (depending on how much work I have to do), and finish between 6 and 8pm, again depending on how much work I have to do, and I might go to the toilet in between. I rarely get a lunch break at all, let alone a ten minute break every hour 😳

rustlerwaiter · 27/02/2024 21:52

Depends how much I'm into the work I'm doing. I could go two or three hours without a break if I'm in a long call or doing some work where I don't want the break in concentration. Other times I'll easy have 10 minutes in an hour.

If you're working on a computer it's recommended you take a 5-10 minute screen break every hour anyway. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.unison.org.uk/get-help/knowledge/health-and-safety/computers/%3famp

Computers | Health and safety | UNISON National

If you work with computers it is important that you sit in a way that does not cause back problems and take regular screen breaks to prevent eye strain.

PawsisShady · 27/02/2024 21:58

A screen break can just be a break as in looking away
Because I work in a call centre and it's not sort of data entry where you're focused on the screen all shift technically we don't get screen breaks because we can look around etc

tillyandmilly · 27/02/2024 22:09

You need to break out of your prisons! Ridiculous you can’t leave your desk for ten mins an hour! Everyone needs-breaks from staring at their computer screens its not healthy for your eyes to be sat staring solidly at a screen! My boss encourages me to get up and go for short walks !

It's just not always possible. If we all took 10 mins an hour then we would answer less calls and have more queues
We get an hours total break in 9hrs

2024theplot · 28/02/2024 00:06

10 minutes every hour is excessive. Most desk jobs I've had, I've managed to get up and stretch my legs once an hour - walk to the printer, or grab a glass of water or cup of coffee to drink at my desk, or pop to the loo.
In my last job it wasn't uncommon to get caught up in the kitchen chatting with coworkers but then management would call us out for it. A bit awkward as they wanted us in the office for the social benefits but didn't want us socialising on work time.
I've worked some places where they monitor how long you're away from your desk and expected you to rack up less than 10 minutes "away time" across the whole day (other than lunch).

Help221 · 28/02/2024 00:16

I probably get up 3-4 times during the work day (excluding lunch) and go get a drink/go to the loo or even just do a circle round the office to get my legs moving. Probably spend 5 minutes each time doing this. So excluding lunch I'm up from my desk and moving another 20 minutes of the day.

Mimikyuu · 28/02/2024 00:26

My boss has filled our office with games and that and encourages us to take breaks. He’s not so much a fan of the office chair jousting but he allows it.

CrispsnDips · 28/02/2024 06:48

I use stand up desks as I literally cannot sit for hours, I start to seize up (but I am almost 60). When WFH I am constantly changing my position: standing, sitting, swapping chairs/stools. I keep running up and down the stairs for a cuppa/empty the washing machine, etc

In my younger days I could sit and stare at a screen for hours but I simply can’t now 😳

blink3times · 28/02/2024 07:02

I mainly WFH and break at 10.30am and 2.30pm to make a drink, let the dog out etc which is probably 10/15 minutes plus lunch at 12.30ish.

If I don't give myself specific times I don't get a break!

sweetpickle2 · 28/02/2024 07:08

Some people on this thread need to raise their bar a bit.

10 mins every hour is recommended and not excessive.

I wfh and I take about 10 mins each hour (maybe spread out throughout the hour) and a full hour at lunch.

Taylormiffed · 28/02/2024 07:38

bea sitting for that many hours is incredibly unhealthy. You need to be up every hour. Our bodies were designed to move.
I walk to work and for lunch but I'm still up every hour.

It's not raising the bar, it's just being realistic depending on the job
I worked as an emergency call handler - you won't get 10 mins or even 5 every hour there

Beezknees · 28/02/2024 07:43

We get 10 minutes in the morning and 10 in the afternoon, 30 minute lunch break. It's call centre based so you can't just pop off every hour when there are calls waiting. You can go and make a quick coffee or have a toilet break of course.
