I’m at my mums house and she has an elderly, indoor cat.
we took our eyes off DC for a second and he had a turd in his hand from the litter box and had bitten the top off!!! I dashed over to him and tried to scoop it out but I think he’d already swallowed it!
jesus Christ, I’m horrified!
he doesn’t seem phased at all and has eaten his dinner fine. I, on the other hand, keep retching!
what do I do, if anything?

I’d call 111. Dog poo I know can be very serious if eaten, not sure about cat poo.

Alwaystired23 · 26/02/2024 18:15

Keep a close eye for symptoms of toxoplasmosis, I think. I'm not sure. Is the elderly cat in good health usually?

Apart from being old and deaf, he’s fine

I think cat poo can be dangerous, call 111 OP

sprigatito · 26/02/2024 18:19

Definitely call 111, cat poo can have some nasties in it.

babybons · 26/02/2024 18:24

Sorry this made me laugh. I have about 20 similar stories from my sons childhood.
Boy's are such a nightmare.
You will laugh about it in time, but for now maybe call 111. I think cat poo can be a bit dodgy.

PurpleChrayn · 26/02/2024 18:32

Absolutely disgusting. I know these things happen but FFS. Watch your kid if there's shite around.

Hoglet70 · 26/02/2024 19:45

I remember my old cat having explosive diarrhoea everywhere and DS appearing at the top of the stairs absolutely covered. He'd crawled through it. Hands, face, everywhere! I'm sure he had a good taste too. He lived to tell the tale and didn't suffer any ill effects.

britneyisfree · 26/02/2024 19:50

Regardless of who's or what shit it is, I'd be calling 111.
Going forward you should move the shit somewhere your kids can't get to it. Gross

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/02/2024 19:52

Definitely call 111.

No need for the judgey reply is there? Ffs.
Yes call 111 Op for advice but I would think this will be ok. These things happen. Don’t worry

This reply is worse. Just, why?

britneyisfree · 26/02/2024 19:57

@Jenry I think most people would think eating shit was disgusting to be fair. The only people who don't seem to be the ones who also leave cat and other shit in places accessible to children and other humans

Of course it’s disgusting, that wasn’t the point of the op. These things can happen, even if a cat’s poo is scooped almost straight away it’s easy to not notice the second they’ve done one. I’m sure it’s not a regular occurrence but lots of people don’t have a completely separate fenced off room they can keep a litter tray in. And 2 year olds can be pretty speedy!

Likemyjealouseel · 26/02/2024 20:00

I think op knows it’s disgusting, that’s why she’s concerned

Upsidedowncat · 26/02/2024 20:00

If it's always been an indoor cat it shouldn't have any nasties in it. Toxoplasmosis for one, is something only outdoor cats can get.

britneyisfree · 26/02/2024 20:01

@Jenry then it should be somewhere a two year old can't reach it.
If she'd said her two year old had just eaten a load of pain killers would your response be the same?
We know toddlers lack impulse control so we're meant to keep them out of the way - because life means we can't watch them every five seconds.

I'm guessing someone close to you has eaten shit in the recent past???

Somethingsnappy · 26/02/2024 20:02

Yep, get some medical advice on that one, OP. Cat poo can infect with toxoplasmosis. Better to be safe than sorry.

How can shit not have nasties in it?????? Whether it's been out side or not call a doctor 🤢😨

Surely any cat would be outside at some point?

Pinkiepie9 · 26/02/2024 20:04

Very rare for indoor cars to get toxoplasmosis but they can get it from uncooked meat. For example if they went up onto a kitchen counter and ate it

Willyoujustbequiet · 26/02/2024 20:04

Toxoplasmosis can cause blindness.

Please ring 111

Upsidedowncat · 26/02/2024 20:05

@britneyisfree as in, anything that is likely to cause the child to become unwell. I'm trying to reassure, OP. Didn't say they shouldn't get checked anyway though!! Just saying it's more unlikely to have diseases in it (much more likely with an outdoor cat). Hope that clears that up for you😮‍💨

McQueensMuse · 26/02/2024 20:07

As long as the cat's wormer is up to date he will be absolutely fine.
I know this because my almost 2 year old ate cat sick a few weeks ago.
(Before anyone starts, she'd vomited silently behind the curtains and I had no idea until the baby started eating it 🤮)

um, you need to call your pediatrician.

My child’s pediatrician has me call her for things like a simple cat scratch.
