To think beef is the most disappointing roast dinner?

I much prefer chicken with stuffing or lamb. We had beef last night for a change and it was well cooked but just not as tasty.

You’ve cooked it wrong then, I love beef with some horseradish sauce 😋

Underdeniablyexhausted · 26/02/2024 07:19

YABU - beef is my favourite. It is about the type and quality of joint and how you cook it.

Hoglet70 · 26/02/2024 07:20

I prefer chicken and lamb but my DH is a really good cook and he does beef and pork really well too so I enjoy it all. Badly cooked beef and pork are horrible though, you can't go wrong with a chicken (other than poisoning everyone).

IggOrEgg · 26/02/2024 07:20

YABU. So U. It’s top tier roast when cooked right.

ErinAoife · 26/02/2024 07:21

Well cooked beef is like eating a shoe sole. I loved beef but for me it can't be well cook and you need a good cut of meat.

DustyLee123 · 26/02/2024 07:21

I’m not liking lamb at the moment, it doesn’t seem to taste like it used to.

DustyLee123 · 26/02/2024 07:22

I’m loving braising steak at the moment.

ohpumpkinseeds · 26/02/2024 07:23

YABU - beef is the best roast!!!

HotChocWine · 26/02/2024 07:23

I slather mine in french mustard, and cook to medium rare, firm fave here

ohskedaddle · 26/02/2024 07:24

Beef is great if cooked how you like it - in our case pink in the middle. My dm used to cook beef until it was like old shoe leather so chicken was preferable at their house 😂

ZenNudist · 26/02/2024 07:25

Chicken is but boring weeknight supper, roast beef is treat food.

YABU

NooNakedJacuzziness · 26/02/2024 07:25

Rib of beef is out of this world. My least favourite is lamb, it's always full of veins

TwilightSkies · 26/02/2024 07:25

YABU. Its amazing.
Slow-cooked beef, all the trimmings plus gravy mixed with pepper sauce. Drool!!

DominoRules · 26/02/2024 07:28

I agree with you OP, it’s my least favourite of the roasts!

I love a good steak or beef casserole but just much prefer pork/lamb/chicken on a roast

Katemax82 · 26/02/2024 07:30

I normally love beef but the last few joints my husband has bought have been vile! We normally get the asda extra tender beef roasting joint but last week we had one of those rib joints from a butcher ( it had no flavour) and yesterday we had a ribeye steak joint which turned out to be about 50% gristle. Again no flavour. Both from the same butcher. I've had to ask my husband not to get joints from there again

When you say 'it was well cooked ' do you mean well as opposed to rare or medium? If so, that's probably where you went wrong (to a beef lover!).

If you meant 'well' as opposed to 'badly' then for me that would mean quite rare. Which in turn means it needs to be a very good piece of beef. Better than I'm willing to spend money on unless it's a special occasion, to be honest!

If your preference is for beef to be cooked well done, then I can understand you preferring pork or poultry that to my mind suit more thorough cooking better than beef. There are beef dishes that involve long, slow cooking, but a classic roast beef dinner isn't one of them, IMHO.

A perfectly cooked beef roast dinner is a thing of beauty. Sadly most people can't cook a roast for toffee.

Blanketpolicy · 26/02/2024 07:34

We treated ourselves to a sirloin roast at the weekend instead of a takeaway. Cost a fortune, but was amazing.

Backwiththeillbehaviour · 26/02/2024 07:35

More so for the cow.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/02/2024 07:37

Ime the quality is more variable than other meats. We once had a beef joint from Morrisons that was so unpleasant we ended up throwing most of it away.

BarrelOfOtters · 26/02/2024 07:42

By well cooked I meant it was cooked with care, it was medium rare when I prefer rare but it wasn’t badly cooked. Should have phrased it better.

I prefer beef in a tagging, or stuffed with something exciting, I’m not that fussed about steak either…

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned turkey. I know it's seasonal, but it can be so so dry and boring! Admittedly I have had really juicy turkey, but more often than not it's a disappointment.

Minikievs · 26/02/2024 07:49

I said for years and years that I hated beef. Only realised after my ExH cooked a roast beef for the first time that it was just the way my mum cooked it that I hated.
She cooks it for as long as it says on the packet, and then an extra 40 mins "just in case". It's like shredded duck.

DappledThings · 26/02/2024 07:50

Well I'm a purist so beef is the only roast you are allowed Yorkshire puddings with! Worth it for that alone.

WimpoleHat · 26/02/2024 07:51

I think it’s one of those things that is hugely variable. Some roast chicken is nicer than others, but it’s always okay. Whereas beef can be absolutely fantastic if you have an A* quality joint cooked to perfection - or pretty nasty and school dinner-ish if you have a stringy, tough bit of meat. I generally avoid it for this reason, I must admit!
