Teacher giving wrong information

Questions1ww · 25/02/2024 22:40

I’m just wondering how you all would react and if my reaction is normal. I was helping DS with his homework and he started getting upset with a question’s answer given by a book so I checked lots of sources and it’s correct but he’s adamant his teacher told him something else and even showed me his school book which he told teacher told him and rest of class to copy down. I reassured DS the answer is in fact correct and we spent a considerable amount of time checking different sources etc. I explained teachers are just humans and they get it wrong sometimes after trying to figure out that maybe he mis heard her or maybe misunderstood. He is very quiet and won’t say anything to her and truthfully I won’t be either as I feel it’s something we very quickly cleared up and I do studying with him after school so I can help him clear up any misunderstandings quickly.

I don’t think any good will come out of talking to the school, the teacher seems very lovely and I can’t be 100% sure she did actually mis-teach them or just a misunderstanding. It’s been a few issues I’ve noticed. I work in the field this subject is so maybe I’m noticing it a lot more but it’s very small things in some subjects such as for example one thing she apparently told them that a certain thing insect is a vertebrate but a quick think or even a Google search would tell you it’s not as it doesn’t have a spine so is an invertebrate.

I’m wondering what the rest of you would do? How would you raise it if you were going to? As I said I probably won’t as I’m worried about any fallouts etc. and I can easily go over any misconceptions at home with him. But on other hand I can only do this for one or two subjects as I am not very good with English, maths and computing etc. so can’t really help much with these subjects of which English and maths are obviously more important.

When did the OP mention her son got ‘upset’.

She is, rightly, concerned that her son is being taught incorrect information.

What happens to the rest of the class who don’t have parents checking their kid’s notes? Of course the teacher should be made aware that she is giving out wrong information!

It’s in the original post Grin

‘and he started getting upset’

Mischance · 26/02/2024 14:06

All's well that ends well for your son. - and what happens about the others who have no idea that what they were taught is inaccurate? - is that OK?

Stop being so smug you caught them out. - it is not about being smug; it is about being concerned that our children are being taught accurate facts by qualified teachers. That is not an unreasonable desire.

Probably because his supposed teacher is giving him incorrect information and goodness knows what else she has misinformed the class about. He will have lost trust in her ability to teach!

oh behave. If my 15 year old got upset over this I’d consider myself having failed as a parent. It’s pathetic

rubyredknowsitall · 26/02/2024 14:35

@sashh Is computing a taught subject now then? I have a degree in (50%) computing but had no idea it could be used in teaching

That's really insulting, when kids get stressed it's perfectly normal to get upset especially when it's gcses and they have so much to learn / remember. You really don't need false information, when you have 10 + subjects to study for.

I can understand your concerns OP and ofcourse having a word with the teacher is fine. You need to know if it's your son misunderstanding etc.

I’d recommend you return to your classroom.

MN is over run with teachers who are on MN instead of doing what they are being paid to do.

Sherrystrull · 26/02/2024 17:02

Mn is overrun with teachers who should be teaching? What ignorant garbage.

OMGitsnotgood · 26/02/2024 17:10

I had a few things taught to me incorrectly at school which I only realised when studying said subject at university. I even checked it out with school friends who recalled that we had been taught the wrong thing.

That said, even though teachers should have a degree in their subject (secondary state schools anyway), it doesn't mean they have covered everything they need to teach in that subject. And some subjects such as languages, they need every word/case/verb declension to be correct which is a tall order. Personally, I'd have a quiet word with the teacher and cut them a bit of slack.

Oh come on.

And what is your deeply important job that you're shirking to be on mumsnet at 2.39pm?

Don't answer that. Because whether you're on a tea break, or you're a sahm and your kids are napping, or you're on mat leave, it doesn't matter. No one, not even teachers (eye roll) need to be Usefully Employed All The Time.

It’s true.

Every single thread about school, teachers and pupils, will have teachers flooding it with posts and very often during school hours too.

Mumoftwo1312 · 26/02/2024 17:24

God forbid that a teacher takes even a moment's break during school hours, eh? Even when they're doing a shit. They'd better be doing subject knowledge preparation at the same time.

Bringtheweatherwithyou · 26/02/2024 17:26

Mumoftwo1312 So you’re a teacher too eh. Case in point.

Sherrystrull · 26/02/2024 17:27

@Bringtheweatherwithyou

Have you heard of part time teachers?

Seriously.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 26/02/2024 17:32

This drives me insane, my kids primary teachers often misspell words or misuse punctuation, apostrophes, there/their/they’re, your/you’re etc. They also don’t seem to have the first clue about art or music either.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 26/02/2024 17:32

Ask the teacher if she intends the task as a research opportunity eg. True or false. Your child may not have copied down word for word or the teacher may have slipped up. It's nice that you're going to approach it gently.

That is a very interesting table. MFL comes out particularly badly.

Would you give me the source, please?

You could easily Google further research to find out more. Most people are quite shocked at the state of secondary education.

That is how I would approach it too but it would depend on the teacher too tbh.

I'm on maternity leave. What do you do?

Edit - love that you thought this was a clever gotcha that would make me rethink my idle ways, though.

Here’s the link for anyone else interested.

The article says it’s a Labour Party analysis of this gov.uk information, which is taken from this.

Here are some of the “Headline facts and figures 2022” from that government page. This page mentions that a language is part of the EBacc.

I'd you're not going to say anything to the teacher, or the school, I personally wouldn't have bothered posting on here either!

You started it with your random stupid insult. You can hardly be surprised when people stand up for themselves and challenge you.

Please tell us what insect it was 😁perhaps a millipede? Stick insect?

I once was made to memorise that kiwi fruit was from Australia. Despite the sticker on the kiwi in my lunch box saying New Zealand. Teachers can be wrong and you or your son should bring it up, especially at GSCE level.

Millipedes are myriapods.
