To think hangovers get so much worse as you age

I'm 50. It's six o clock and I'm nauseated, shaking with the cold and
Cannot eat. I was home
By nine last night and straight to bed with loads of water but was out for the early evening watching the rugby.
This can't be worth it? Stomach bloated and painful earlier also..
Anyone else?

Yes, they do get worse, but I wonder if you have something else wrong today as well.

theyongs · 25/02/2024 18:17

Like what else? A bug?

YANBU and I rarely drink any more. I was a student in the 90s and used to drink loads on nights out.

theyongs · 25/02/2024 18:17

I got progressively worse as day went on

100%. Not only are hangovers worse but even fairly moderate drinking of the sort which I used to be able to manage comfortably midweek without any impairment makes me feel awful.

Even a couple of units makes me feel sluggish, anxious and impairs my ability to work or do exercise, both of which I value more than drinking.

I’ve got to a point now where drinking is not really worthwhile for me. I still drink when the occasion calls for it but never to excess and rarely unless there’s a social event where it’s expected.

CockerMum · 25/02/2024 18:18

yanbu I gave up in my early 30s for this reason, I was completely useless for 24 hrs and less than optimal for the next 24, it’s not worth it for me

GrandHighPoohbah · 25/02/2024 18:20

Absolutely. This is the reason I rarely drink any more. I don't think dealing with the hangover is worth it.

FinallyFeb · 25/02/2024 18:23

I’m 55 and don’t drink in the day as I don’t enjoy it, well the sobering up bit anyway.

The maximum I can drink now I’d three drinks on a night out. Two Proseccos is my favourite amount to drink. One is a bit lonely, three and I don’t enjoy the second half of the glass and I know I’ll have a hangover in the morning.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/02/2024 18:37

I rarely drink a lot these days, but I can still happily sink a bottle of wine on occasion without getting a hangover. I'm 52. I do sometimes feel a bit anxious/unsettled after drinking that much, but I have to drink a fairly heroic amount to get actual physical hangover symptoms.

MadelineWuntch · 25/02/2024 18:39

Yup. Those internal organs aren't as fresh, pink and perky as they once were, and they don't keep up like they used to.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/02/2024 18:40

From menopause onwards I found that alcohol no longer had any effect on me, no buzz, nothing, but I would get alcohol-induced migraines which would put me on the bathroom floor, head in the toilet for an entire night. Even one glass of wine was enough to have me vomitting myself inside out for hours.

God, I miss drinking.

AhBiscuits · 25/02/2024 18:43

At uni I'd have an absolute skinfull, bounce out of bed at 7 and go to my job in a hotel kitchen. If I get anywhere close to tipsy these days the next day is a write off.

strugglingnd · 25/02/2024 18:44

I never get a hangover but just feel tired and sluggish the next day.Felt far worse when younger with room spinning nausea/ headache etc.

Mischance · 25/02/2024 18:44

Your body is telling you something: do not get drunk.

Bunnyhair · 25/02/2024 18:45

47 and scarcely drink anymore because my body just stopped being able handle it past my late 30s. I get awful headaches and palpitations and unbearable anxiety the next day.

But about twice a year I really fancy what a glass of wine used to represent for me, so I buy one of those tiny airline sized bottles and pour myself a glass and sit with it for a bit, just to be sitting with a glass of wine. 😳And sometimes I’ll take a sip. And then I’ll use the rest for cooking.

TooMuchPinkyPonkJuice · 25/02/2024 18:45

I've always had terrible hangovers even at 17 full of youth. Now they're not so bad tbh but I think it's because I drink less and hydrate more lol

ChanelNo19EDT · 25/02/2024 18:45

Yes, any more than two drinks now, I'm properly hungover the next day. Sometimes I vomit several times the following day. Even though I had food drank water between each drink, felt fine going to bed, the next day I'm in RAG ORDER

mynameiscalypso · 25/02/2024 18:46

Ugh yes. I had two glasses of wine at a work event and felt shit for about 48 hours. Even if I have a drink at lunch and then totally sober up during the afternoon, I still feel it the next day.

Drunk!? My body is telling me not even to have 2 small glasses of wine with dinner

MoonWoman69 · 25/02/2024 18:49

I hardly drink now, because of this! I found that hangovers lasted 3 days, or rather the effects of the alcohol did and I felt rough enough to think I was going to die. Just couldn't cope with feeling that ill!
If I do go out to a pub, which is very rare now, I know my limits and start on soft drinks or coffee... I recently tried 0.0 % Guinness... I was impressed!!! May try the gin next! 😁

So true and an excellent pictorial way to keep be away from the booze. I remember being told never smoke after 40 and drink rarely after 50.

Jan069 · 25/02/2024 18:52

Me too! 55 now and struggling with even a third of a bottle of wine. I'm down to only drinking Friday and Saturday evenings now, about 8 units a week. I still feel wretched the day after so it's probably only a matter of time before it's special occasions only. I miss it but it's almost certainly better for my health. I'd been keen to reduce my alcohol intake for some time but was expecting to do this by willpower, not intolerance.

ChanelNo19EDT · 25/02/2024 18:54

@MoonWoman69 same,if I have three glasses of wine, the hangover lasts into tge second day

Taylormiffed · 25/02/2024 19:00

Yep. Middle age and alcohol don't mix for me. I had 3 glasses of wine, with a meal, over a long weekend evening a few years ago. I was poorly until the weds. After that even cutting back to 1 glass of wine made me feel grim.

These days I eek out a mini bottle of champagne over 3 days at Xmas and that's it.

LindorDoubleChoc · 25/02/2024 19:08

Yanbu. It's why I'm so much more responsible with my drinking on nights out ... lots of water and being very careful with wine as the evening goes on.

But your predicament today sounds very extreme OP! Maybe it's not actually a hangover? Or maybe you have developed a severe intolerance to alcohol?

I can still drink quite a lot without feeling nauseous the next day. I don't think it's necessarily the norm.
