To really dislike the term “birth control”?

It’s not actually birth control, it’s conception control. A termination could be called birth control I suppose. But taking a pill or using a condom is not preventing birth, it’s preventing conception.

Isn't it more usually called contraception here.

Ponoka7 · 25/02/2024 14:38

It's a title given when termination was illegal, still is in some places. It's also globally recognised. Birth control was the opposite of enforced motherhood, which women still have to fight against.

I don't know anyone who uses the phrase birth control - its contraception round my way.

Sparklesocks · 25/02/2024 14:41

I suppose it’s similar to sexual health clinics being called family planning (although I think this is less common now), I certainly wasn’t family planning when I went for my STI tests/morning after pills as a young’un 😄

It is birth control - it contributes to the overall control of birth rate in a population.

I don’t know anyone who uses that term though, in the U.K. But it’s widely understood from our consumption of American media where it appears to be more common.

I disagree with you - as it does control birth rates - but even if it didn’t, I don’t see why it bothers you so much. I’m all for a bit of pedantry - but not this.

And I really dislike the word, “Housewife “. I didn’t marry a house. I married my husband therefore I am HIS wife.

The word 'wife' simply means woman. So a housewife is a "woman of the house", a fishwife is a woman who guts fish, a midwife is a woman who is with ("mid-") another woman (at birth), an alewife is a woman who makes ale etc. There are loads of occupations ending in "-wife" indicating they were primarily done by women.

Dictionary definition of “wife” - do please look it up

Froniga · 26/02/2024 13:56

Oxford dictionary definition:- wife “ a woman who is married.
Therefore “Housewife” surely can be taken to mean “a woman married to a house”
Take from that what you like courier!
I shan’t be wasting anymore time on this as it’s pointless

Do you think a fishwife is married to a fish and an alewife is married to ale? You need to look at the etymology of the word rather than one single, modern meaning.

Old English wīf ‘woman’, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch wijf and German Weib .

I have only ever had it called contraception on the nearly 20 years of use. This also doesn't cover the many women that are using it for other reasons. My sister started on the contraceptive pill at 14 for problems with her periods and my primary reason for being on the mini pill is my mental health. Hormonal therapy maybe would be a more inclusive name.
