Amongst other things;

I have been going backwards and forwards to my GP for over a year with several physical and emotional issues that have been slowly getting worse for over 2.5 years;

Extreme lethargy and dizziness
apathy
Brain fog..... I feel like im living life in treacle and cotton wool
Muscle aches and joint pain
None restoritive sleep when I do get 7/8 hrs
Regularly unable to sleep past 4/5am end up taking nytol
Anxiety on a night but okay during day
Random things like dry eyes, hair thinning and bouts of noticeable hair loss - gaps in eyebrows
skin changes.....2022 had roascea out of nowhere
Seem to have a lot downey hair on face now
Reccurent cystitis - altho many of the time urine culture comes back neagtive and I also often do not get a fever, i do suspect it may actually be Vulvodynia because;
For the last 5 cylces I have had escallating symptons of this in the 10 days before my period - started justt with itchy vagina but no other symptoms of thrush, escalating to sore (?) can only describe it as throbbing vagina and the last the throbbing was so bad it was radiating into buttocks and v painful, also realised this is actaully when the faux cystitis symptoms are hitting
Bad night sweats around time of ovulation

Doctors have so far been dismissive to rude;

I have been tested for and as far as i know all fine;

Thyroid
Kidney and liver function
Vitamin B
Vitamin D
Iron
FSH

Had a ovary and womb scan

All fine, one doctor said its basially just life but could be fibromyalgia and whilst standing up said but we don't treat that now and then opened the door to signify the appointment was over.....I just walked out in tears.

At the last appoinment in Oct I mentioned the perimenopause and a different GP said yes could be but it is too early to start treating as longer you are on HRT the more risky it is. She did then say an anti depressent could help anxiety, sleep and sweats though. Offered no other thoughts and when I brought up the none restorative sleep and joint pain she kind of ignored it and started taking about the sweats - yes alone rank but least of worries tbf!

I am 40 have a 6 yo, and normally exercise regularly - flat 5k x2 times a week (am unable to do any hills/trails now due to joints, vinyasa flow yoga once a week odd bit of sea swimming, zumba class and a good hr on cross trainer at home x1 once a week (used to do hiit crossfit type stuff but again hurts my joints now), also do quite a bit of walking, am a healthy weight for height (size 8/10) which I feel happy with and have a good considered diet (lots of fish, egss and veggies and pulses not much meat or dairy - take iron supplement, low amount of UHPFs, organic veg box etc.

Periods a bit all over the place for past 18 months but for 3 yrs I have taken spirolactocone for adult acne so they said that could have caused altho odd given for a long time no issues and I am on a lower does now than I was orginally.

This past week my symptoms have got much worse;

The lethargy is awful I am constanly dizzy and whereas before daily activites were often a struggle some stuff is imposssible/not safe - no way can I drive, i sort of feel like i'm seeing stars and have to reallly concentrate to type this and its taken me ages, its like i blink to try clear it and nothing happens.

Also the the joint and muscle pain is intense I have totally dosed myself up on codeine this last few days to get on with chores as during the week i couldn't get out of bed I was just so sore everywhere and all my joints kept clicking/burning and I had a throbbing headache and just could stand looking at a screen. It has eased I would say by 50% but still worse than before, and i am, my husband says, limping and walking hunched over....I did consider a virus which might have made exsiting problems worse however I have had no other symptoms, no temp, or respitory issues, negative covid test. Thought maybe on way out howver on fri I woke up and swore my hands and feet were swollen, today this is without a doubt the case they look awful, cannot get my rings on or any shoes apart from a well stretched pair of wide fit trainers I wore at the end of pregancy.

I also think my hair has shedded again as where it had grown back over past yr it suddenly feels thin again (this was actually first noticeable thing about 3 wks ago).

I am going to go to the doctors obviously but I think I need to be prepared to jump through the hoops and take the antidepressents and see if they help I am just resistant as I've heard they can make you gain weight - I do not want to add to my issues with that!! And that they can make you a little bumbly/disconnected , this is one of my main issues and why I can't go back to work i am just able to to care for DC although struggling with current presentation but if that got worse not sure I manage long term.

I second the post about Lymes disease. Your GP might be dismissive - mine was because I haven't been around any deer. In my case the tick probably fell off a bird that had, and landed in my garden.

You're missing the caveat 'can potentially in a very small number of cases' there

that's lies, they do to many people. They lie so they can make money. Finasteride for men is the same, basically castrates men.

SomeCatFromJapan · 25/02/2024 13:52

They definitely did that to me, numbed me right down, took ages to orgasm.

Mayorhumdinger19 · 25/02/2024 14:19

@Thelnebriati honestly I’ve not even wanted to mention that as yes I have, got bitten found it in 2020 and there followed the classic rash round the bite - different GP surgery but was treated promptly with amoxicillin I think (can’t take the first line) for a few weeks. I did have some residual issues and they were looking into it at my old surgery but they didn’t really get anywhere - they asked for a panel on various things and phlebotomy only did a couple of them and none of the Lyme indicators. GP tried to get in contact over a couple of weeks but couldn’t, they were going to arrange for them again but then that Christmas lockdown hit and I was feeling much better so kinda left it. We moved house the following summer - hence new surgery. I did mention it at the second to lady appointment and she sort of scoffed at me. Before telling me it was fibromyalgia most likely and quite literally showing me the door 😕

OP posts:
Thelnebriati · 25/02/2024 14:32

In your shoes I would absolutely have the test for Lymes again. If your GP doesn't agree they should respect your request for a second opinion, but it might damage your relationship with them.

theimposter · 25/02/2024 14:38

Consider Perimenopause and also look into Ehlers Danlos. Clicking and sore joints are also a symptom of that. Although good luck getting any help from NHS with EDS because similarly to Fibro they don’t bother with it any more as it’s ‘untreatable’. I use a high quality CBD oil which helps

SomeCatFromJapan · 25/02/2024 15:13

OP sorry didn't realise you'd had a tick bite. Lyme is notoriously hard to pick up in tests if you've had it for a while, and the tests that do exist are a bit controversial I think, but it really does sound like that is what it might be.

stargirl1701 · 25/02/2024 15:19

No when on Sertraline, Fluxotine, Citalopram, Venlafaxine or Paroxetine.

Yes on Mirtazipine.

RM2013 · 25/02/2024 15:22

I took fluoextine for about a year around 4 years ago and didn’t gain any weigh

Im slightly older than you - 49 but been on HRT for a couple of years but I definitely had symptoms of the perimenopause for at least two years prior to this.
a lot of the symptoms you describe can be linked to the menopause. My intiail
symptoms were joint pain and night sweats. The joint pain is better but I have horrific brain fog, anxiety, low mood, loss of self esteem, I can fall asleep no problem but wake at 3am every day which has left me feeling exhausted.
HRT has helped but I wasn’t on the correct combination/dose which has recently been corrected.
I was tested for thyroid, full blood count, liver function and diabetes also just to make sure nothing else was causing the symptoms.

I found the balance app really helpful as helped me track my symptoms so I felt confident to ask for HRT.

I would ask for a second opinion as it sounds like you have a look going on. Hope you manage to find some relief from the symptoms

SSRIS cause long term sexual dysfunction even after use, avoid them

Id rather go without sex than struggle with my MH.

im sure sex is low on the list when your head is a bit fucked up.

EmmaEmerald · 25/02/2024 16:33

LeavingRightNow · 25/02/2024 11:53

And ask for a referral to rheumatology for your ?fibro/joint pain. This is all unacceptable.

This

Sorry to say I think has been handled wrongly by docs from the start

They should be investigating properly.

the tick bite needs more investigation too.

Also, I'm sorry to make work for you but you will need to look at your bloods yourself, don't accept "it's fine". The thyroid figures are medicated at very different levels in different countries too. Also, I don't think NHS tests fully for thyroid unless you see an endocrionologist.

ADs seem like a way to fob people off and avoid referrals to specialists. For women, there's still also an attitude of "must be hormones" going on.

I wish you luck and better health 💐

Yes i gained weight on sertraline and it made it very difficult to lose weight. I only put two and two together when I read it on here and realised a few years back I stopped the sertraline for just over a year and lost loads of weight, I thought I just did really well at my diet 😂 the weight slowly piled back on when I went back on the anti depressants

Mayorhumdinger19 · 26/02/2024 09:49

I found the none curiosity around the Lyme odd even though that wasn't my initial thought (as I'd had the right does and course length of antibiotics promptly) it was worth mentioning. It strange they were dismissive as we live in a high tick area and there are posters in all the parmacies and in the GP waiting room itself about safe tick removal and lymes and in 2022 there was an nhs advertising campaign as I kept seeing the same posters at bus stops etc.

Mayorhumdinger19 · 27/02/2024 10:50

@EmmaEmerald thank you, they took basic bloods again yest but I don't think they did the thyroid ones I am going to ask for a print out of everything, I am in Scotland so can't look in the ICE thingy that you have in England. She did mention Endocrology and I think I wil mention Rhumatology as well. Lord knows how long I will wait. though. I don't think I can afford two private referals perhaps one. Presuming they would refer me back under NHS care if they found something? Would endo advise on possible peri meno also?

Why are they so disparaging, she even asked yesterday.....so is it effecting your daily life, well of course it f'ing well is (didn't say that) I wouldn't be here otherwise, I haven't been able to get out of bed, struggle down the stairs, can't drive currently due to swelling (certainly not with DC in car) might do a short trip just me, can't do the buttons on DC school shirt. Woke up this morning feeling like been hit by a bus - again. Took a nytol and slept through pretty much 7 hours, DH did school run woke again at 8:50. Banging headache and absolutely throbbing right knee. despite being laid on my back most of night, obviously no weight on it - wedged myself into position with maternity pillows. Kinda seeing stars as I type this. I find it so offensive that they think I would make this up, I could be having a really rich and fulfilling life, I don't need to make up medical problems!!

Disturbia81 · 27/02/2024 10:58

To not be suicidal, depressed, anxious vs sex.. not even a contest.

Disturbia81 · 27/02/2024 10:59

Same with weight gain.. no contest.. healthy mind is everything.

Mayorhumdinger19 · 27/02/2024 11:14

@Disturbia81 I don't have depression, just anxiety on a night/middle of night and unrefreshing/light sleeping, I have a a myriad of physical problems, I don't really want to add to them which obviously being overwieght would, especially to my joint/mobility issues, I want to jump through the hoops the GP is laying down as I think that might be the only way of getting further help but I don't want to add to my already severe phyiscal problems, hence wanting to know some IRL experiences of this whilst on SSRIs

OP posts:
SomeCatFromJapan · 27/02/2024 11:43

Honestly they're giving you an SSRI because they can't/won't work out what's actually wrong with you so that's their go-to.

Mayorhumdinger19 · 27/02/2024 12:29

@SomeCatFromJapan i just don’t get it why dont they want to try help me?!? Do you think they don’t believe me?

OP posts:
Icannoteven · 27/02/2024 12:38

Yes I gain 2-3 stone whenever I am on an SSRI. It comes off naturally when I stop taking it . Oddly, the scientific literature claims that people gain only a few pounds on average. I wonder if it is to do with how some of us metabolise the drug .

also, I echo what other have said regarding night sweats and antidepressants. They are a big causal factor.

MaMisled · 27/02/2024 12:43

Oh yes! Setraline gifted me with 2.5 st in 10 weeks!!!

radioactivekumkuat · 27/02/2024 13:02

I lost a lot of weight on fluoxetine- was constantly nauseated and just couldn’t make myself eat. Very unhealthy though and I felt awful and weak the whole time.

Sertraline (I think! Have been on many SSRIs) was the opposite, I gained a massive amount of weight. I was constantly starving and just couldn’t feel full no matter what or how much I ate. It was horrible.

Mirtazipine made me hungry too, but I was prescribed it to help with sleep. Unfortunately the sedating effect lasted too long for me and I wasn’t managing to wake up for work.

OP, as others have said it sounds like there are things going on other than “just” depression. I have been in a similar-ish situation, though my problem was that it was a different mental illness and I was being inappropriately and highly medicated for something I didn’t have, while my problems from the actual illness got worse and worse. I hope you get proper investigations for the issues you’ve been having, if I could go back and do it again I would be far more assertive on being referred for proper assessment and diagnosis (though it’s mental health for me so not quite the same).

SomeCatFromJapan · 27/02/2024 13:08

@Mayorhumdinger19 NHS GPs are in general really not great with chronic illnesses that they can't find an obvious cause for. In your case I am a bit baffled that they'd ignore the obvious, namely the tick bite.
If you have the energy I'd recommend looking into as much as you can yourself so that you can ask them for specific tests or referals or discuss specific treatments.
