Slimming World for sustained weight loss?

SummerGardener · 24/02/2024 13:08

I am on a waiting list for an operation. It is likely to be months before I am operated on, and in the meantime my mobility is low.

I both need and want to lose weight beforehand.

AIBU to do Slimming World for sustained weight loss?

If not that, then what?

Also it will probably mess with your relationship with food. No diet with arbitrary rules is sustainable. You can have a banana but not if it’s mashed. You can eat as much pasta and muller light yogurts as you want?! Some food is sinful?! It basically nicely packaged disordered eating.

I would suggest looking into nutrition, macros, whole grains, good foods for staying full, more vegetables and whole food protein sources.

Don’t demonise any food as that will just make you crave it more. Move your body if you are able to exercise (apologies I missed what the operation is and if you’re fully mobile or not) , for joy and pleasure not as punishment.

Diet culture and quick fixes are unhealthy in the long run, unfortunately. If there was one diet or plan that worked for everyone there wouldn’t be any customers for slimming world etc.

I agree with @Thementalloadisreal.

Have a look at TeamRH on TikTok, I really like him and he talks a lot of sense, especially about many of the diet clubs out there. For me, I needed a complete lifestyle change, I needed to understand calories and why I was gaining a few pounds here and there. Good luck, I hope you find an eating plan that suits you.

I would suggest intermittent fasting and a healthy, Mediterranean type diet. Lots of vegetables, moderate amounts of lean protein, and small amounts of complex carbs, healthy fats/nuts and dairy/full fat Greek yoghurt.

With the exception of fasting what you describe is pretty much Slimming World. I ate olives, loads of veg, lean protein, rice, yoghurt, fruit galore, cheese, fish and the odd treat of chocolate and wine.

At the end of the day slimming world is a money making machine.

Once you get to target you can continue going for life without paying a penny.

Where it falls apart is the extra crap they try to peddle you that is all mega ultra processed food.

I lost my three stone without eating any of the ready meals or bars. I used the free recipes on the SW website to make home cooked meals. I never felt pressured to buy any of the meals, bars or recipe books....in fact, the books I have were all free when I signed up for blocks of classes.

@SomersetTart ”Slimming World's revenue is $921 Million”

It’s a money making machine. You get access for free at target, but it’s still a massively profitable business, and we shouldn’t pretend it isn’t. The owner is very rich. People wouldn’t buy into the system if it didn’t work though.

correct me if I’m wrong but is the focus on low fat rather than low sugar?

No, it’s both

You don't have to eat their branded products. Dh likes the bars and finds them handy but otherwise they make very little from us Grin

People buy into it because it works to a point. It’s a profitable business because people inevitably put weight back on and start paying them again.

I don't like sw due to the negative language around food, syns, its so crap. The whole banana issue, whole its syn free, mushed its synful.

Calorie counting would probably be better but whatever you do try, it's got to come from you, lead a horse to water and all that.
If you want it, you've got to do it and if do you have a crap day, write it off and carry on.

SomersetTart · 24/02/2024 20:32

My experience of SW seems so different from the negative comments on here. I found there is so much positive talk about food at my group, about all the healthy and tasty foods you can eat freely and the amazing recipes in the books. We have food parties where everyone brings in their favourite dishes and the food was amazing.

I haven't 'inevitably' put the weight back on and feel that having gone through the SW programme I've learned so much about what to eat to keep myself at a healthy weight. I serve SW meals all the time in my house and guests often ask for the recipe so it's good, tasty stuff and not 'diet' food.

Obviously they're a business and there to make money, but fair play to them, it really works and it's changed my life. I guess what works for some doesn't work for others and the secret is to find what will help you and be in the right head space for it.

Most people do ‘inevitably’ put the weight back on. There have been studies.

ps. I’m pleased it works for you and that you enjoy the food. I’m not trying to take away peoples personal experiences.
Just sharing the facts that diets generally do more harm than good.

I did it years ago and it worked. I didn't ever eat the processed crap they tried to sell though. 6 mullerlights a day etc. I ate Full fat Greek and it didn't do any harm.

They've actually given the mullerlights a syn value now to stop people troughing them down six at a time just because they were free.
