Workmen

We're having some work done at the house we've not moved in to yet so I need to be there to unlock when they arrive/lock when they leave the house.

I've asked them what time they would be starting each evening and been told 8.30 so have arrived each morning at 8.30 to unlock the house but they have turned up anywhere between 9.40 and 11 - they know I have a young baby and the house is very cold without us living there / heating it (windows being replaced o no point putting the heating on)

Also there is only one working loo in the house but one of my lovely new neighbours has called over to introduce herself and tell me that one of the workmen is using the garden as a loo in full view.

Aibu to speak to their boss about this or should I just keep asking them for times and tell them to stop pissing in my garden?

There aren't masses of workmen at the house that would mean a queue for the loo

If you haven't moved in I would strongly consider giving them a key.
We have done this with workmen many times with no issues. Are you liaising with them all separately or is there one point of contact?

As for the toilet...depending what this guy is doing, and what is being done on the house...does he know there is a loo he can use?
His boss should be making sure they have access to welfare facilities but many don't, especially only there a couple of hours at a time. But he may not be used to having access to the domestic toilet.

I would say to his boss that the neighbours have complained so can he stop please.

I would have given them a key from day 1. Why wouldn’t you?

MixedSignals · 23/02/2024 06:30

I haven't given them a key because when I ask what time they'll be there in the morning I ask if it will be them and they say not sure if I'm on another job tomorrow.
They know about the loo - the other one does work it just doesn't have a door on - they're being stripped at the minute.

Give the boss a key. It’s then up to them to coordinate entry. You can’t keep turning up hanging around for them each morning, what a waste of your time!

If it’s a big job, you should give them a key, you cannot possibly wait around for them to arrive. Definitely speak to the boss re using garden, tell them that’s a no, especially if there’s a working toilet. I had the misfortune of seeing this when my neighbour had work done, I told neighbour who then told the builder, who was absolutely furious his workers were doing this.

Give them a key but change the locks when they’ve finished. My neighbour had workmen in and was burgled several weeks after they’d finished by someone with a key which had to have come from the workman. Unless you have one of those locks where the key can’t be copied without authorisation.

Thanks all
