AIBU to ask for advice on evening meal to suit everyone?

Foolishly, I said: wd you like me to do tea? Understandably, the answer was YES. On my home ground, I produce quite nice meals - and I generally have alternatives to hand in cupboard/pantry/frigfe/ freezer. But this will be two courses in someone else's kitchen, tomorrow. I've gone blank.

I cannot think of an easy meal to suit a one-year-old, picky 4-y-o, 7-y-o who can be tricky; urban adults around 40, one unable to cope with chocolate, the other with little enjoyment of veg; a conservative gent in his late 70s -and me. I am the least problematic.

I've been cooking for years and years, but I've gone blank. All I can think off is sausages followed by fruit salad and icecream

AIBU to ask for you advice?. (If you think I'm NBU, please give me some ideas.) I can get to a modest supermarket in the morning before paying this visit.

Personally I think a soup and then a selection of rolls and spreads and let everyone help themselves.

I’ve served fajitas to a similar group…bowls of spiced chicken, plain chicken, peppers and onions, cheese, sour cream, beans or rice if you like and smashed avocado…serve up warm tortillas and let people help themselves! The picky people can have plain chicken and whatever else they like, veggies can have pulses, veg and all the trimmings, omnivores can have it all! And kids like making their own too. Then fruit salad and ice cream for afters

Maybeicanhelpyou · 22/02/2024 17:27

Roast chicken and a fruit crumble

JanuaryBirthdays · 22/02/2024 17:27

Cottage pie, ham egg and chips, spag bol?!
Fruit salad and ice cream sounds like it'll tick the box too 👍

Jacket potatoes, salad, garlic bread, various toppings: beans; coleslaw; tuna mayo, cheese, sweetcorn. Then let people help themselves.

Toad in the hole with mash, then tinned fruits and ice cream (fresh fruit is so expensive)
Jacket potato with cheese/beans/tuna/chilli, salad. Then bananas and custard

Pasta with cheese/chicken/tuna, with tomato-based sauce, then rice pudding (tinned perhaps)

Chicken, mashed potato, mixed veg. Then trifle.

This. Always works for a big group. And baked potatoes are always nicer than you remembered/expected

A mild chilli, or chicken korma, with rice.

Roast dinner would seem to me to be the most obvious choice!

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 22/02/2024 17:35

Pizzas and some nice salads?

egowise · 22/02/2024 17:38

I agree with the following

Pizza
Roast

And I'll add, some kind of pasta, macaroni cheese is always good!

But this will be two courses in someone else's kitchen WHY?

Why 2 course? Entree + main, main + dessert or a different combo?
Have you used their appliances/oven/cookware etc beforehand? Even similar ovens can have differing cooking times, heats more on one shelf or a certain area etc.

Without the added info, I'd do something like fajitas/tacos where there is a variety of ingredients on the table and people help themselves. Or pimped pizzas. Buy plainish frozen pizzas or pita bases and make from scratch/add ingredients.

Entree- soup and crusty bread
Dessert- jelly and ice cream +/- fruit

Gagagardener · 23/02/2024 21:22

I spent about £15 in the Co-op, and served a meal of chicken drumsticks and chipolatas, baked potatoes or pasta, and pre-prepped veg, followed by a crumble made from eating apples with a packet of crumble mix, and ice cream. The meal was deemed a success.

Hated their cooker, but so do they!

Thank you for your interest, advice and suggestions.
