Mobile phones and cars

I've recently started a job with a lot of public transport + walking, and since getting out of my car I am gobsmacked at the amount of people still using their phone whilst driving.

I can walk down a road of traffic and see 1 in about every 5 drivers on their phone, and not in a cradle - sitting on a bus I can see people tapping out messages, on Instagram/WhatsApp in their lap, phone up their ear, video calls, YouTube with the phone sitting on the dash in front of the speedo.

What is going on?! Do you use your phone whilst driving? Do you know the rules changed last year?

I imagine most of the people using phones whilst driving couldn't give a crap about anyone else and are confident they have very little chance of being caught doing it by the police

If you can, film them together with the registration and report them online, I do, they deserve everything that they get.

Brahumbug · 22/02/2024 11:32

By the way, I don't film them whilst I am driving, before anyone picks that up!

need to move to the Isle of Man system - 6 months in prison / £1000 fine.

but the bigger issue there is no police to police the usage.

It's because the penalties are not severe enough so people don't seem to care about being caught.

If phone use in a car came with a driving ban, people might think twice before using their phone.

We've had lots of 20 mph limits put in place through towns and villages, and I've seen a HUGE increase in people using their phone in the car now due to driving slower.

Good point about the police not policing - I can't remember the last time I saw anyone being pulled over.

They often get caught on camera by cyclists who give the evidence to the police who do indeed charge them.

Yes I see it a lot.

Fine right up to the point you end up in an accident. And if you do you're going to get the book thrown at you.
