Can drinking bath water cause a bad tummy for DD

My DD 4 has a bad tummy.

Earlier this evening ( at around 5 ) she had a bath. I always tell her not to drink the bath water..

She was sucking on a wet sponge and I think she did drink some.

She started having diarrhoea a couple of hours later and has just woken up again with stomach cramps and diarrhoea.

It's hard to say if it was that, but I'm curious what everyone thinks ?

Also, how can I help her feel better ? Lots of water and dehydration sachets, plus BRAT diet comes to mind and is what I usually do. Any other tips ?

Thank you

Vomiting has started now. It's going to be a long night and if it's a bug ( most likely ) it's going to be a long couple of weeks in my house. Sad

Oh god you poor thing!!!

My two drink bathwater constantly and I haven't noticed a correlation between thay and D&V.

Any chance you have Pepto Bismol Kids in the house? That normally buys me time over night so we can all get some sleep.

Hopefully she will feel better soon!

If she was just sucking a sponge I doubt she'd have swallowed a great deal - depends how clean it was too - not dirt so much, but really soapy more likely to cause problems I'd have thought.

More likely to be a bug I'd have thought,
Hope she feels better soon.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know there was pepto for kids. Of course I don't have it right now, but I'll get some for next time !

My son (2) took a cup in the bath the other week and started drinking it. The next day we were at hospital with him vomiting and being very lethargic. They said it was just a bug but I immediately thought of him drinking the bath water him and his baby sister were in. Not sure if it was related but weird to now see this too

SerialLurker997 · 21/02/2024 23:26

Oh no, that sucks! Honestly mine drinks bath water like a little fish (I try to stop it but short of restraining him it’s difficult!) and I haven’t noticed related tummy issues. That said I do deliberately not put any bubble bath etc into the water because of this and I wash him just before I take him out. Good luck, tummy bugs are the worst!

Most kids drink bath water constantly. Prob with wee in it. But wee is relatively sterile.

LeopardPrintTits · 21/02/2024 23:35

Were there any toys or anything else in the bath? Sometimes bath toys (especially the ones that squirt water when squeezed) can grow mould or bacteria inside that could make a child ill

FabFebHalfTerm · 21/02/2024 23:42

It might be something in the bath water, it might just be coincidence, but I'd be saying 'and this DD is why we do not drink the bath water'

kids are weird aren't they!!

fingers crossed she's brought it all up now & you both get some sleep!

xx

As somebody else said, it would be likely if the sponge or toys had black mould in them. I've always used flannels for my kids for this reason, they get washed frequently with the towels. It's better than having a sponge for weeks.
I bet its just a coincidence though. Its not going to be the actual water in the bath and I doubt she's swallowed enough soap to cause an issue.

trafficli · 21/02/2024 23:53

It was actually a flannel, not a sponge - it was wet and she was sucking on it. There were some bath toys in there. But not the squidgy ones.

Who knows ! She's asleep for now..

Wish me luck !

My bath water comes from the same pipes as my drinking water an most homes do so if you have a combi boiler it will definitely be a bug.

I think it's just a coincidence then. Hope you don't have a bad night and she's better tomorrow

Boil the sponges
