to not want to work overtime for a lower hourly rate.

Have posted this on employment site, but am also posting here. I work for the NHS (am a nurse). When we work overtime (covering holidays, sickness etc we normally put it on our timesheets. Because I work part time I get my hourly rate up to 37.5 hours. Never work over that.

Now our trust is saying that if we work overtime we must join the nurse bank and it is capping the rate of band 5 nurses (my band) to mid level of band 5. I have been qualified since 1985, so am at a higher level. It means that I can do my normal hours from 8.30 - 12.30 and be paid £11.70 per hour, then if I am covering hols work 1pm - 5pm for £11.00 per hour. I am the same person all day, with the same experience so why the difference? I am sure the managers etc would not work for less then their worth.

Why not work your over time for an agency? I used to go a work a shift in a nursing home for more money than I earned on the wards.

What does your union/professional body say? Sounds like a pay cut to me and hard to justify.

I only do the overtime to help my unit/colleagues for hols and sickness. Guess I am a bit shocked at the trusts lack of conscience.

They're relying on you not making a fuss.

I agree with McDreamy - go and look around at the sort of rates you could get in a different environment. If the extra money is worth the hassle then stop doing bank at your hosp and do it elsewhere.
