Have you ever just left a job and not gone back?

Just that really. Have you ever just though I’ve had enough of a job, and not worked a notice or handed a notice in with a sick note therefore meaning you didn’t have to return? What were your reasons, and how did your employer react and how did you feel after doing it?

References nowadays just confirm your dates of employment, not worth the paper they are written on. It's not a problem.

Unless you work in education. I managed to piss my last line manager off (various reasons, nothing related to my ability to actually do my job well). Applied for a new job, interviewed and tested and was accepted. A few weeks later they rescinded their job offer, having sent a competencies list to my line manager, who had marked me as poor for nearly everything. I didn't even get the chance to explain.

Edited to add this is very common in education, a simple "X worked here from y to z" won't cut it.

You can sue them for doing that. You can see them for slander and damage to future employment prospects. This is why most companies will only give dates of employment

Oh yes hahaha. Worst one was sitting at my desk in a call centre, team leader had a bee up her bonnet with me from day 1.

Fucking weirdo she was, said something cheeky one day and I just flipped. Told her to shove her job straight up her rectum and walked out. No notice nothing
BEST FEELING EVER🤣😜

Yes at 17, job in a greetings card shop-I literally thought I was going to die of boredom on the first day. Second day I was on the bus on my way in to the place of the snooze fest and I just thought fuck this and stayed on the bus all the way back home 🤣

QueSyrahSyrah · 21/02/2024 20:16

Yes once. I'd been there 6 weeks, management were completely incompetent and pushing the blame for their mistakes affecting clients onto lower staff. Left on a Friday and never went back, emailed Monday clearly detailing why.

My previous employer had asked me to go back (with a change of circumstance removing the reason I'd left) so I had a job to go to.

That said, a member of my team left without notice just recently and it really bothered me, although she'd given no indication she was unhappy, so I'd think twice before I did it again.

Dreadful, bullying boss. Shouted at me one time too many. Told him to shove the job where the sun doesn't shine and walked out. Was paid notice and it triggered an investigation into his high staff turnover leading to his eventual dismissal.

Treehugger22 · 21/02/2024 21:44

Yes I used to do it alot in my early 20s

Turtlerunner · 21/02/2024 21:54

In my 20s I went out for a sandwich at lunchtime & just didn't go back to the tw*tty company & boss. Felt great, never regretted it.

Or someone with a professional job that requires a trail of references.

Agreed. Or someone who can’t afford to walk out of a job without another one to go to, most of which will require references. Not sure what’s 1950’s about that scenario.

Someone from the 1950s always pops up on these threads.

And a rude, ignorant one.

Pussycatmom · 21/02/2024 22:45

Yes. Did two shifts in a Chip Shop at 17 and hated it. The older women that worked there took an instant dislike and one actually informed the boss that I came back from my break without much ‘enthusiasm’ 🙄

Management was shit, had no proper training, and the final straw was the end of my second shift was when I was blamed for the till being short!

I left that night, and never showed up the next day. Bliss.

Alltheyearround · 21/02/2024 22:51

Not me but a friend of mine did, many years ago.

She worked for a school and was having a lot of trouble with a bullying colleague. Left a note on the manager's desk and went home for Christmas. Never came back in the New Year. Set up her own business and did really well. Said it was the best decision she ever made.

Yes, sent her a message saying I won't be returning next week and blocked the bitch! The end! I felt like the whole world had been lifted off of my shoulders after!

Similar. I was a housekeeper and the bitch in my situation reduced me to tears so I left and blocked her

Sodullincomparison · 21/02/2024 23:11

Ten years ago, I’d resigned and my boss agreed to an earlier leave date. He then changed his mind when my replacement quit and said I had to stay for another two weeks.

I said I couldn’t as plans had been made - he said I would never work in the UK again if I didn’t.

So on the agreed day, I left my laptop with HR and left without goodbyes to anyone. Changed my SIM and left the country.

Saw him the other week at an industry event and gave a nod. His boss happily provides references.

Worked at a betting shop during covid, boss was an arsehole, I frequently manned the shop alone for long periods of time. I never felt safe there and way too much responsibility over large amounts of money. Also watching addicts piss away their money all day was soul destroying. Frequent arguments with customers over covid rules inside the shop/about results of bets and threats towards me, a boss who loved to gloat about how much money she was making from her side business (that she would frequently work on whilst meant to be actually working) to a 21 year old me who was sofa surfing at the time, it wasn’t fun. A local alcoholic who used to work there and was sacked for drinking on the job accused me of stealing her job and I had to be wary every time I walked to work in my uniform.
One day I just thought fuck it, I can’t do this anymore. I was meant to be opening on my own that day and I text my boss to tell her I wasn’t coming in again and that I’d be signing off for my notice period. Shit hit the fan, I turned my phone off and let the weight just lift off my shoulders. I got another job within a week :)

Sidehustlequestion · 21/02/2024 23:41

Yes! I walked out of my last job halfway through the day at the end of last year. My manager was a horrendous bully that pushed me too far this day and I decided I’d had enough. Gathered my things and left, leaving my keys on his desk on my way out! I complained to HR but they deemed his behaviour ‘professional and acceptable’ but did admit that certain accusations he had made about me in retaliation were proven false by CCTV. Honestly, I’ve never felt better! While I was driving home that afternoon I felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off my shoulders and I’m so much happier now. The way the company investigated my complaint proved it wasn’t the type of company I want to work for and leaving was the right decision. Life is too short!
I am very financially stable though and thankfully don’t need a reference from them.
