To ask how to combat peri-BO?

I stink!

Plain and simple. There's no way of getting around it. I shower 2-3 times a day, and use 2 different deodorants to try and keep the smell at bay, but nothing is working.

I've NEVER had BO before, but since I hit my early 40's (and am 100% certain I'm peri-menopausal since 40) my BO is out of control! Not yet on HRT (will it help with this though?)

I sweat just talking on teams calls (think this may be due to anxiety),I sweat in the office just doing nothing, throughout the day just existing, and in my sleep. Genuinely embarrassed to wake up next to DH smelling the way I do.

I'm currently using a natural salt deodorant (people rave about them and apparently they're meant to kill the bacteria that causes BO - it doesn't!) and then after that dries I use the aerosol Mitchum (antiperspirant) which has always been my go to. I do this after each shower.

But these just aren't cutting it anymore and I'm starting to get really embarrassed that other people I'm around can smell me.

Posted in AIBU purely for traffic, although I assume IANBU in assuming that I'm not the only one having to deal with this issue. So please! Someone tell me what will work!

I buy dettol soap in Sainsburys, comes in a pack of 2

Gymnopedie · 20/02/2024 20:27

Coal tar, Dettol or a tea tree soap.

As per a PP, hand sanitiser is a useful additon.

Driclor made me itch so badly, even though I washed it off almost straight away (I couldn't stand it) I itched for a week.

I like the triple strength Mitchum cream but I see not everyone does.

BigFluffyHoodie · 20/02/2024 20:39

This is weird. Because the older I get, the less I smell.

CorvusPurpureus · 20/02/2024 20:44

Apple cider vinegar!

Honestly. No idea where I read this, but sponge your pits with it after showering & before deodorant & dressing.

It absolutely killed my meno BO - apparently it wipes out the stinky bacteria.

You do then want a fairly scenty deodorant so you don't smell like a bag of chips, but lesser of evils...& I only needed to use it a few times to fix the issue.

gerteddy · 20/02/2024 21:05

Well I've learned that I better ditch my dove soap too!

Asides from that the only thing that truly works for me is odaban. You can buy online usually from a chemist but I sometimes get it from Amazon.

You put it on last thing at night before bed. It smells a bit nasty and can sting a little bit but ur off to sleep anyway. When u wake in the morning u need to wash it off. U might need to build it up everyday for a week and then every few days. Sometimes I still find that although I'm dry I can still smell unpleasant if I sniff my pits but it's not that bad that someone else cld smell it.

Longwhiskers · 20/02/2024 21:09

Yeah go old school with the soap. You want something your granny would have used liked Imperial Learther or Coals Tar, maybe Pears…

BlondeFool · 20/02/2024 21:10

I can only use Sure Maximum strength. Nothing else works for me.

dementedpixie · 20/02/2024 18:09

And try using soap instead of shower gel when washing

This.
I had the same problem. 90% sorted with changing to a soap bar. I’m 43.

Stickyricepudding · 20/02/2024 21:13

Shower using Dettol bar soap and use Mitchum roll on deodorant for women.

isthewashingdryyet · 20/02/2024 21:13

Soap for underarms, real soap as so many people have recommended. But also a flannel to really scrub underarms. A new one every day.
and roll on Mitchum

NoWordForFluffy · 20/02/2024 21:14

Is it peri women keeping sales of Dettol soap buoyant?! 🤔🤣

It's also good for smelly teenaged boys and pongy feet!

NoWordForFluffy · 20/02/2024 21:16

My boy isn't yet a smelly teen, but I shall keep that in mind!

PuneorPlayonWords · 20/02/2024 21:21

Bar of proper soap in a soap saver bag (small fine mesh bag made of light hessian or heavy cotton thread often used to mush the ends of bars of soap together into something usable) to scrub your pits. Strong enough for a good scrub but won't irritate the skin. Also, reduce caffeine.

hawesmead5 · 20/02/2024 21:22

I got to about the same age and started sweating all the time, but had freezing fingers and feet. I then found out I had thyroid problems. It has really helped since I have been on my meds. Anyway I used perispex comfort once a week (this one in the green tub and doesn't sting like others). I then use vichy 48h soothing deodrant unscented each day. This really helped with the issue, and then wore loose fitting clothes.

anunlikelyseahorse · 20/02/2024 21:26

I use coal tar soap, it's one of the few soaps that doesn't irritate my skin

https://trustproducts.co.uk/products/trust-long-lasting-aluminum-free-extremely-effective-deodorant-for-underarm-odour-protection this stuff works really well.

I had exactly the same problem. Changed my clothed daily, washed twice a day, but still smelly. Someone recommended trust on here. I use it around every three days in addition to my routine, and it's totally eliminated the smell.

You only need a small amount every few days so it lasts for ages.

Edited

Thank you! I will try this as well. I've never liked the idea of using heavy chemicals and aluminium on my skin, so have always tried to keep it as natural as possible. I used to only used Mitchum stick and then aerosol when it was really hot out or if I knew I was going out to a club or somewhere with a group of people. Then started having to use it all the time.

I've tried the Wild natural brand, when it first came out but didn't find it helped at all. The most natural one I found that worked was this one from L'Occitaine https://uk.loccitane.com/shea-butter-deodorant-balm-01DE050K21.html

I might try it again as well as the one you've recommended and see how they work on days when I'm just working from home and don't need to interact with anyone Blush

I've got some in the fridge so will try this too!

I found a bar of real soap in the cupboard this evening, so used that 3 times on my pits this evening and have washed all my PJ's and WFH clothes in a hot wash with Dettol laundry rise.

Will be picking up the Dettol soap and some new antiperspirants tomorrow!

Proper soap and Wild deodorant worked for me. Also use anti bacterial rinse on clothes to kill any lingering bacteria whilst you get to grips with the soap and Wild. I have tried Fussy too, but prefer Wild. I have recommended this before to someone and it worked for them too.

ThechicRoyal · 21/02/2024 00:01

I sweat more from my face then my pits but I use koji soap (bright orange) for my face and body including under arms, then after I'm out the bath, I use some dove deodorant under my shaved pits and then moisturise body with body lotion, spritz some coco Chanel perfume all over my body and then no matter how much I sweat I don't emit an unpleasant odour.

ADVICENEEDED987 · 21/02/2024 00:17

I'm the same. I had issues with bo before I had children (I even had botox injections for it which worked amazingly), then the excess sweating and bo stopped after having my first child so it must have been hormonal, but since hitting 40 I have terrible bo again. I wash with proper soap each morning and use the sure Deoderant in a box. I make sure I wear cotton clothes or other breathable fibres. Wearing anything like polyester makes me smell terrible so I have replaced a lot of clothes with ones made with more natural fibres over the last year or so.
