To be concerned about compression fractures.

Hi,

sorry if this is a long and confusing post. About a year ago I slipped on a wet path and landed really hard on my bum and sustained a wedge fracture of T9 and T7. A few months later I was in a lot of pain again, so was sent back for another x-ray which showed some further loss of height in the vertebral body and some progression in the T7 fracture.

Last November I had an MRI scan of my spine for something unrelated (I have a split spinal cord with a bony spur going through it and have started to develop neurological symptoms). When I got the results of my MRI scan back it noted compression fractures of T6-T9 which really confused me as I always told I just had two fractures. I asked my GP about it and she doesn’t know as it was neurology who referred me for that scan, so she advised me to ask at my hospital appointment (neurology have now handed me over to the complex spine clinic after discussing my case at the complex spine mdt and I’m waiting for my first appointment). But my GP also sent me back for an x-ray again last week as I was in agony again. I saw the results on the nhs app yesterday and it says no changes but still mentions T6-T9 fractures. To me this is a change as as I said before when I initially had the accident I was told T7 and T9. I’m trying to get an appointment with my GP but there aren’t any available for two weeks. Am I being unreasonable to question why they’re not concerned that my x-rays are now showing four vertebrae? I’m really worried about the impact this is going to have on my life as I age as the MRI scan showed that I’ve now got mild kyphosis and I’ve already got scoliosis of my lumbar spine. Should I be concerned? Does anyone have any experience of multiple compression fractures?

I broke L1-L4, two compression fractures and two hairline.

It's crap they either didn't pick the four up at the time, or haven't quite got it right, but i lead a very active life since doing it. I have horses, still ride competitively, ran London marathon and various other half marathons. I don't think the compression fractures will be what you need to worry about with everything else you have going on 😔

Hope you get some answers soon.

Thank you so much for your response and for putting my mind at ease. Really glad to hear about your story and hope you've fully recovered from your fractures now. Yeah, I think I've been feeling ultra anxious about it as I already have so much going on with my spine and am starting to see the impact of that now. Just desperately waiting for my hospital appointments!

Have you been assessed for osteoporosis and a DEXA scan?

Pd1 · 20/02/2024 14:07

Yeah, I had a DEXA scan last April or May I think and am due another one this year. My results came back as low bone density for age so was referred to the bone clinic, but then the consultant said she thinks they've read my results wrong as I have spina bifida occulta in my lumbar spine (alongside my split spinal cord and scoliosis), so thinks that that has messed up the calculations somehow.
