Should I tell the civil defence I am pregnant?

I've wanted to join the civil defence for years but every time I contracted my area HQ I was told they weren't taking on volunteers right now. I emailed last October (not pregnant) and was told they would be doing an introduction course in January. By the time that came around I was 9 weeks pregnant.

I went, it seems like something I would love to be involved in. So I filled in all the paper work to join. They got back in contact this week to say I can start classes this week. I am now 14 weeks pregnant.

I can only find in their hand book about existing members """If a volunteer becomes pregnant, she is advised to discuss her Civil Defence activities with her
doctor. Any safeguards suggested by the doctor/medical staff must be strictly adhered to. When appropriate she shall inform her CDO or ACDO.""

But I also feel a bit bad that I sort of deceived them because I won't be the most useful member for 2024!

I have had 4 miscarriages in the last few years so I try not to put my life on hold when I am in early pregnancy. I am also in Ireland not sure if CD is in the UK of if ye know what it is.

YABU - You should have said at the intro meeting

YANBU - It's OK you didn't tell them straight away

I don't think I will tell them for another week or two I haven't been to a local class yet and don't want that to be the first thing I tell them about myself! But if it comes to doing anything unsafe I'd have to say. Or ordering uniforms

Congratulations!
I would just tell them as soon as possible, it's something that must happen a lot

I would just let them know at the earliest opportunity. These things happen, and remember you're giving up your time - they're not paying you! So I wouldn't be hanging on to any guilt about "deception" or anything like that. Presumably you'll still be able to do a fair bit for a few months yet.

Just be upfront and honest. Otherwise you'll worry yourself sick over it. Good luck!

I'm confused - is this the civil aid course? (There's no civil defence now?)

Are you doing the basic training soon?

pontipinemum · 20/02/2024 09:26

Thanks, I have my first class/ training this week and it is on every week. I might not say anything this week and tell them next week. I am already showing so they might guess!

@LaurieFairyCake I am in Ireland we have a civil defence here
