I’m very concerned and wondering if anyone can share their experience or if any medical mumsnetters can reassure me?

I was admitted into a ward on Thursday with suspected appendicitis, turned out to be a severe kidney infection. I was on an antibiotic drip via a cannula in my right arm for little over 48 hours, also had blood taken from my right arm and left hand (awful veins) on three occasions. I’m now at home but ever since I got home my hands have been tingling with what feels like a cross between burning and pins and needles. Things like flushing the toilet feels like the skin is going to come off my hand, hair brushing and washing is so painful. I’ve never felt anything like this and it’s now lasted nearly 48 hours. Has someone hit a nerve with a needle that’s done this, is it a mental antibiotic side effect? I really need to get back to work asap and I need my hands for my job! Any help would be appreciated.

It’s possible they have touched a nerve , it will repair itself and the electric shock feeling with get less frequent

YuleDragon · 19/02/2024 13:48

have you spoken to your dr about it? Surely that would be the sensible thing to do...

adviceneeded1990 · 19/02/2024 13:50

@YuleDragon 52 mins to reach a receptionist this morning to be told I’ll receive a call back on Friday. Sensible advice but sadly for these bygone days where GPs were available!

I had this last year after having a cannula in each hand (first one went wrong so they did the other hand instead). I mentioned it to the GP and was told they probably hit a nerve. As @mrsbyers mentions it did eventually go away and is absolutely fine now.

@adviceneeded1990 are there any walk-in/Minor Injury places near by you can go to?

Overtheatlantic · 19/02/2024 13:57

They might have blasted a vein. I’ve had that happen before and it was very tender for a few days.

Bunnybear42 · 19/02/2024 14:00

I would just ring the ward you stayed on and ask a nurse for advice. They may be able to advise you if normal or need to seek treatment without waiting until Friday to speak to own GP

@YuleDragon talk to your doctor.

Oh how simple that was in days of yore, perhaps they even made it house visits. Unfortunately in the UK at present it's nigh on impossible to get any help or speak to a doctor.
