... for anybody, never mind children. We watched it this evening, and I was amazed at the racism, the sexism - it was like something made in the 40s!

I hear what you're saying seeker - I think the middle film of the trilogy (Temple of Doom) is rather uncomfortable viewing these days. But a lot of the 1980s big Hollywood films are just as clunky and sexist - Romancing the Stone, anyone [vom]? James Bond in its entirety?
I agree with MissGelly that the leaden, unsubtle hand of George Lucas the writer is probably responsible for the the shallow, lazy stereotyping in Temple of Doom. The man is rubbish at writing convincing characters of either gender. That's why the Star Wars series is soooo boring unless you like pan-galactic gargle-blasters etc
