To want a wok and think it'll be a useful bit of kit for the kitchen?

I like new kitchen equipment so I'm mindful that I might just be getting carried away with wanting something new. Is it really better than just a frying pan?

Ours gets used a lot. Use it for stir frying noodle dishes, making fried rice, Chinese main dishes. Holds a lot more than a frying pan

I use ours for pretty much everything. Great buy!

Mama2many73 · 19/02/2024 08:16

I'm not a big cook but use our wok a couple of times a week!

My wok is the best piece of kitchen equipment I own. As above, it makes utterly perfect fried rice, noodles and all other sorts of Asian dishes.

We have the Souped Up Recipes carbon steel wok. If you're serious about Asian cooking then it's an excellent investment.

If you have room to store it and you would use it to cook stir fries etc then yes get it. I think getting it makes you want to try new recipes too.

I have two and also use both. I'd get rid of normal frying pans before the woks - use them almost every day. I make curries and bolognese in them as well as stirfrys- because they are deep they work so much better than frying pans for me.

Woks are quite cheap (especially if you get one from a Chinese supermarket) and useful for cooking lots of things. It’s just a type of pan really.

I don’t think I even really seem as ‘kitchen equipment’. They feel like standard cooking kit (and I think I assume most people just have one).

It’s not like asking if it’s worth buying a waffle maker or fondue machine.

MissTrip82 · 19/02/2024 08:25

Wow. It’s the one thing I’d absolutely have. I’m 46 and have used it twice a week for nearly thirty years. I’m vegetarian so eat a lot of stir fry and curry.

caringcarer · 19/02/2024 08:25

My DH is vegetarian and he uses his wok all the time for stir fry dishes with lots of veg and a few Chinese noodles or rice.

Ponoka7 · 19/02/2024 08:26

I agree with pp. You can deep fry in a wok, as well. A wok is a very versatile pan.

Newname0 · 19/02/2024 08:30

Can also be used instead of a deep fryer for proper chips, samosas, falafels etc.

Mothership4two · 19/02/2024 08:33

Use ours at least once a week.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 19/02/2024 08:33

I’d rather a wok over a frying pan.

IAmNotAVet · 19/02/2024 08:34

I use a wok all the time. They're just a big frying pan. Doesn't have to be expensive.

I'm not a good cook, just messy.

And we like big portions in our house 😀
