Driving license

Posting for traffic really!

Wondering if anyone can help.

My partner needs a new provisional license.
He lost his old one that had his old address years ago, it's expired anyway. He doesn't have a passport (never left the country Grin)

How an earth do we do this? we can't renew online as address is wrong and doesn't know his driving license number & doesn't have a passport.
Would we just apply for a whole new licence with his birth certificate? They don't make the process very easy.
Hoping someone lovely on here can help us.

Have you tried to do it online? or do you think you may not be able to do it? You can create a DVLA account and access your driving record from there:

Driver and vehicles account: create an account or sign in - Renew your driving licence - GOV.UK (apply-for-driving-licence.service.gov.uk)

It may be worth creating an account if you haven't already and seeing if you can change your address on the system before then applying for a new licence.

If not the post office may be able to point you in the right direction!

Before you continue - Renew your driving licence - GOV.UK

Tried that unfortunately driving licence address is over 3 years old, he never bothered to change it as wasn't using it 🤦🏻‍♀️
Think I'm going to have to ring DVLA in the morning.

Or he could call himself?!

Get a new form from the Post Office, mark the section as lost driving licence. You will need new photos and possibly a birth certificate or passport number on the application

This, is there a reason why you’re sorting it for him op?

I guess he is at work when lines are open ?

fedupandstuck · 19/02/2024 09:21

Lines are open 8 till 7 pm Mon to Friday and Saturdays from 8 till 2pm. They also have webchat and email contacts. He really can sort this out for himself, and in fact probably needs to do so as the OP isn't the holder of the licence in question. The DVLA won't be able to speak to her about someone else's licence.

Come on, there’s so many ways to sort this himself. I lost my old provisional and somehow, without being in any way exceptionally clever or even proactive, managed to get a new one all by myself. The OP doesn’t need to be sorting this at all unless there’s a very exceptional backstory.

feelsosilly2024 · 19/02/2024 09:53

He has autism so doesn't like phone calls and he's at work, not that had anything to do with my original post?

Just incase anyone googles this question in future Spoken to DLA got his driving licence number just need to do a D1 form & get post office to take a new photo and pay. Thanks for the help!

It took my DD 2 weeks to find time to call to a similar place.. The phone line was open only during office hours 9-6 when she was at college plus travel plus some after college activities. So I can see how someone else might need to phone and ask about necessary documents or anything similar if the issue was urgent.

kalokagathos · 19/02/2024 11:52

Why can't he investigate this matter?

there was only 10 replies when you put this comment... I'm not sure why people are so quick for OP to say 'it's not my problem, YOU sort it!'? I would do this sort of thing for my DH because he's not that confident on the phone.. it's part of the kindness we show each other being in a caring relationship, he does things for me which I'm not keen on doing.

Besides the fact it was nothing to do with what OP was asking about, I'm not sure why people find it so intolerable that partners offer to do things on each others behalf.

Glad you got it sorted OP!
