To think dogs are unhygienic

I know it sounds judgey but hear me out..

DH would love a dog and I do love the idea of having one when I see them out and about it seems really nice and fun having a dog as a companion. I absolutely love other people's dogs!

However when I get down to the nitty gritty of thinking about the actual reality of having a dog in the house it gives me the ick because...

  • I hate dog poo and I don't want to pick any of it up in the garden (DH says he will but I just know this will be slack and I'll end up stepping in it)
  • they're butts are just there out in the open and it will be sitting on the floor maybe even the furniture (have a baby so I don't want him crawling around where the dogs arse has been after a horrible dog poo!
  • I think they all smell bad! And I don't want me or the house to stink!
  • they lick everything on the floor outside and lick things in the house which makes me wince.
  • they obviously walk barefoot outside treading in all sorts of shit and the streets are filthy and they'd be walking all around the house and furniture with these gross dirty feet.
  • the hairs would be everywhere

I just can't get past all of that but I feel I am being unfair on DH who really wants one and grew up having them in the house

They do stink. I can count on one hand the number of houses I've been in where they have a dog and the house doesn't smell. I think there are a few breeds that don't so if I got a dog I'd have to choose one of those.

Overwhelmedmum1 · 18/02/2024 15:55

I have zero animals and love having zero animals.

We’ve had pets in the past, but having no pets is easier, cleaner, nicer smelling and less stressful.

Not everyone should have pets.

Alcyoneus · 18/02/2024 16:01

You are not wrong, OP. People will argue blind against your points. But there is always a gross dog smell in houses of people who own dogs. They will swear blind that their house doesn’t not smell, but it’s because they do not notice it. Even their clothes smell.

Your dog takes a shit and pees spraying itself with its own urine, then you have it climb all over your furniture and even your bed. That’s beyond gross. Argue against it all you like, it’s disgusting.

SENDhelp2023 · 18/02/2024 16:04

Dirty beasts they are. I have 4 tis minging

Chrispackhamspoodle · 18/02/2024 16:08

My dog rolled in animal poo today, ate horse poo and jumped in a muddy bog.I had to bath her in my bath as the portable shower wasn't powerful enough so I've now had to clean the bathroom and all her dog towels. The bathroom still smells of wet dog.Shes now lying on me smelling sweet having a cuddle and i adore her ....but YANBU -she is gross and my car boot is a mess!

Hillcrest2022 · 18/02/2024 16:13

Same way babies are gross. If you love something, poo and wee is more tolerable. My dog is groomed once a month and doesn't shed so doesn't smell and she adds so much joy and perspective to my life. You don't sound ready for it though.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/02/2024 16:16

TBH I often find the over-obsession with hygiene by some MNers to be positively unhealthy.

We had dogs for years when dds were at home, and nobody was ever made remotely ill by anything emanating from them.

Herdinggoats · 18/02/2024 16:17

If you don’t like dogs you shouldn’t get one, all people in the house need to be on board. For me it is a pretty fundamental part of my life and I would never be in a relationship with someone who didn’t want dogs around. If your DP has previously said that he wants dogs and you’ve just put it off hoping it won’t happen then you are a bit of an arsehole for stringing him along- if he’s never really mentioned it or you’ve always said you don’t like them then I think you are in the clear.

ollypollymolly · 18/02/2024 16:23

I think quote sums it up ‘looks around in despair at all the muddy pawprints all over the kitchen floor, and considers how many throws I've washed this weekend>. Yep they can be a bit grim, but they give so much more, such a joy and noone is ever as pleased to see me, ever!’

if you are lacking love in your life or need someone to love you or want and uncomplicated love then get a dog and put up with the disgusting habits they have.

love versus poop as far as I can see

I might add that a young relative of dh, who is a doctor, and is married to another doctor, has 4 young children and has always had a dog or two since the first was a new baby. And one or other dog has often been cuddled up to a baby. I would post one such truly lovely pic here, only I wouldn’t want any of the more extreme MN brigade dying of shock.

Zanatdy · 18/02/2024 16:26

Well I don’t agree with some of your points but I don’t think you should get a dog given you don’t like them much. Plus you missed off much worse stuff than listed, fox poo and rolling in dead rats is far worse than a bare bum showing!! That’s not even the worse of it either

Herdinggoats · 18/02/2024 16:26

@HeyBamboOllyOllyOllyHayMambo your post reminds me of something gross that happened on a dog walk last year . My ds was desperate for a pooh obviously no toilets anywhere near so he had to pooh in the leaves as I was about to bury it our dog bounded up and ate it . It was one of the grossest things I have ever seen

Well you should’ve picked it up and then it wouldn’t have happened. Presumably you have poo bags with you for the dog?
There was a post on mumsnet recently and parents were horrified about coming across dog shit in the woods- I think human excrement is a whole new level of foul to be honest.

ollypollymolly · 18/02/2024 16:28

I mean look above, dogs eat shit. It is soooooooooo

soooooo

gross

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 18/02/2024 16:28

You know there's no 'h' in poo, right?

TokyoSushi · 18/02/2024 16:38

Not RTFT but yes, dogs are fairly filthy. But they are also glorious, the absolute love and joy that they give certainly makes the grubby bits worth it, and then some.

WaitingForMojo · 18/02/2024 16:47

They’re absolutely unhygienic. They are also the meaning of life.

Please post it, I love seeing pictures of pets and children enjoying each other's company.

YANBU. It was only the really bottom of the pile that slept in the some room as animals even in much less hygienic times. Yet now some people think its OK to have animals in your kitchen. Not sure when we lost all standards.

Dog owners will never see themselves as dirty though, they have normalised it in their head.

MrsDoubtfire123 · 18/02/2024 17:08

You should definitely not get a dog. Don’t think it’s the right animal for you.

HollyKnight · 18/02/2024 17:10

Is this wave of dog hating threads not over yet? Surely it is time to move on to the "cats are evil, kill all the wildlife and shit in gardens" era again.

JustKillingTime · 18/02/2024 17:13

Dogs are indeed disgusting. They smell, especially when wet. No dog owner has a clean home. Dogs poo everywhere, lick their bottoms, nuzzle people’s property. I cannot believe some filthy people allow them on sofas and beds. I am not a germaphobe but it is pretty obvious that having dogs in your home is not a clean thing to do. And my kids grew to adulthood without any antibiotics and had immune systems of steel without needing a gross dog licking them!

IME dogs are more hygienic than most people and children.

But if you don't want a dog, don't get a dog. You don't need to justify it as they are unhygienic. You can just say you don't want one.

It’s a bit worrying that the people/children you know, lick their bums, eat poo and roll in shit.

It's very boring isn't it 🥱
