Reason my DS has learning difficulties

Posting here for traffic. My son has undiagnosed autism (hoping to have official diagnosis in a few
months). He also has a diagnosis of moderate learning difficulties and has working memory issues. He’s 9 years old. When he was approximately 3.5 his paediatrician sent him for a blood test to see why he had developmental delay as he was way below his age and had very bad and speech delay. He’s still under SALT now, but very much improved compared to when he was younger. The blood test showed nothing. When I asked the paediatrician why he has learning difficulties and if he would catch up, she just said who knows. She was utterly and incredibly rude overall.
I’ve been fighting for years for my son to get help-EHCP and official Asd diagnosis but i keep thinking about the learning difficulties side to it-why does he have them? My slightly older child is incredibly bright. I didn’t drink, smoke, take drugs-literally not even a single pain killers whilst pregnant despite desperately needing them. I stopped taking my antidepressants as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I’m just curious. Can I ask for this to be looked into more? I genuinely don’t know if that is an option. To me my son is absolutely perfect, but he finds life so hard at times and i feel bad for him. Like I said he’s 9, but developmentally he’s more like a 4-6 year old.

@AstorianPlease how did you find out about the genetic condition? Is that a simple blood test?

@fortifiedwithtea oh bless her, it sounds like you’ve been through such a tough time. Being a sen parent is exhausting isn’t it. I fought for his EHCP since he was 3 and he finally got one aged just turned 9 last year. He is a really good masker so appears fine in school mostly, next year will be the fight to get him in a sen school. If no joy I shall have to homeschool him as he absolutely would not cope in a mainstream.

@Babyroobs yea quite sure my mum is autistic (only really realised this a few years ago because of the similarities with my son) and tbh I do question whether I’m asd too.

@x2boys how did you find out about the chromosome deletion?

My sons paediatrician , sent him for a micro array blood test which picked it up ,they can detect micro deletions/duplication, s etc
My self and My dh,were also tested after ds,was picked up.and neither of us have it so it couldn't have Been inherited so its de novo,in his case

@Lindy2 thanks. I’m very accepting of his asd, he is exactly who he’s meant to be and he’s perfect, I am just curious as to why he has the learning disability. Luckily I’m confident in knowing I didn’t cause his autism- I was told by an Ed psych that assessed him that he doesn’t have autism but if he does it’s either because I have a smart meter or it’s something I did during pregnancy. She’s literally said that to me..I was stunned. Obviously I made a complaint about her because she was disgraceful.
i do have quite a good support network, luckily. I’ve made friends with other sen parents which has helped so much over the years.

What the heck? I hope this Ed psych was struck off. I do not believe a person could get through training with these sorts of ideas (or indeed, get on to training).

@x2boys thanks so much for this info. I will speak to my doctor.

@DrRuthGalloway school also made a complaint about her and they asked if would too which I planned on doing anyway. She was a last minute locum. I emailed the head ed patch of the authority who was great and asked what I wanted, I asked for a different Ed psych to assess, but I really felt she was so biased against me due to my complaint and wrote a shit report. Years later my son was seen by an ex psych employed by the school and I cried with relief when he said he could clearly see all my sons struggles etc. I’ve been fighting for nearly 7 years with different services for my son, by now I’m not surprised when some professionals are absolutely awful-I’ve encounter so many had one, it’s just par for the course now unfortunately, but I keep on fighting!
