To not quite understand why / how we are heading towards lots of wars?

forgivemysillyq · 17/02/2024 22:38

So obviously I am aware of the Gaza / Israel conflict and Russia / Ukraine.
But what is meant when people say we are heading towards a period of lots of wars? What other wars are there likely to be? On British soil or in other areas of the world?

Forgive me if I sound very uninformed, I am and just want to learn.

You will know where will be the next war by what us/uk politicians have to say, wherever they need to take their “democracy” next. Iran I think is the one they are calling air strikes on now

headstone · 17/02/2024 22:42

We are always bombing somewhere.

WomanHereWomanHere · 17/02/2024 22:43

Because, men, mostly.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 17/02/2024 22:44

Because powerful men.

HellersK · 17/02/2024 22:45

Money, it's all ultimately about money and a small group of elites who profit from these things.

PutMyFootIn · 17/02/2024 22:46

Men. - However, the good thing about wars is that the more men that get killed, the safer women are.

My prediction at what's next is that China will invade Taiwan.

Fernsfernsferns · 17/02/2024 22:46

Well the last time there was a change in global power (which country was richest) from the UK to the US it was a rocky 50 years with WW1 at the start and WW2 at the end.

in 1914 the U.K. was the lead global power with an empire on which ‘the sun never set’

by 1945 the U.K. was broke and had to borrow money from financial institutions to get by

the economic and global power of the US is now waning. China will
surpass them. That change is going to be VERY rocky.

add in climate change driving big migration

anything could happen.

Gaza / Israel has been brewing for years.

but is really a confrontation between Iran backed by Russia and China vs Israel backed by the US and (sort of) Europe.

one day China will take Taiwan back and is learning from Russia / Ukraine that there ain’t much the west can / will do.

but our global supply chains are so tied together (probably the phone you me and everyone on this thread are suing was made in China) that is going to cause economic troubles which will make the recent cost of living crisis feel like a warm up

War is almost a constant state really (even if we're not "At War"). It's more unusual to have long periods of peace.

So true.

It's fucking tiresome, all this war. And it's always men. And poor people suffer. A comedian once said that if women ruled the world there wouldn't be any more war, just a bunch of countries "not talking to each other" lol. I know which I'd prefer.

persisted · 17/02/2024 22:56

Conflict over Resources - access to oil, minerals, water, land
Money, profit, power are all aspects of the same thing.

It might be dressed up in ideology but essentially it's about control, the people in charge end up with most money, which means more power and influence.

JobsLot · 17/02/2024 22:57

Some men equate having more land with having a bigger penis 🤷🏻‍♀️

HellersK · 17/02/2024 23:09

We've had a relatively long period of world peace since 1945 but then there's been Korea, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Iraq, etc since. We're just always at war somewhere. I think with 24 hour news channels and social media it's in our faces more.

DissidentDaughter · 17/02/2024 23:10

I never thought I’d see the world unravelling so quickly in my lifetime.

Sure, I’d thought about it plenty over the years, so I’m not always surprised at the bits that are are imploding. I just didn’t think all the elements would start to converge so fast, and on such a scale.

Sorry if this sounds a bit doom & gloom.

forgivemysillyq · 18/02/2024 13:21

So is the general consensus that there will be a WW3?

MadeOfAllWork · 18/02/2024 13:27

I agree with many others on this thread. It’s always men. Sometimes religion, but religion that is controlled by or for men.

Margot2020 · 18/02/2024 13:28

It is certainly not a given that China will overtake the US anytime soon. It is still a middle income country, and they have huge demographic problems that will hamper them significantly. China is nowhere near challenging the US’ military supremacy. This issue is more likely to be an isolationist US leaving China to cause trouble in its region, which of course will be destabilising especially as China’s domestic woes cause it to lash out in order to create distractions.

But the world has always been a messy old place.

SiobhanSharpe · 18/02/2024 13:28

There has certainly been an increase in warmongering recently. I don't think it's necessarily accidental.
The Telegraph (I know, I know) has been verry active in this regard. EG - Britain is not prepared for war, The British are refusing to fight etc.
Meh. What else is new?
But what is worrying is it seems they're trying to stoke up an appetite for war.

Tel12 · 18/02/2024 13:31

I too think that it's about money and power. A few people make a lot of money out of war.

DissidentDaughter · 18/02/2024 13:48

We’re in a different age, technologically, to WW2. Accessing information, spotting connections etc is easier; equally, the technology of warfare has changed - drones etc.

The rules of engagement are unrecognisable, and we run the risk of becoming inured to the levels and scale of violence. What the f*ck has happened to our humanity?

WW3? We’ve been in proxy war zone for some time now. I wouldn’t be surprised, but obviously I’m hoping not.

Yes, blokes have - as ever - a lot to answer for.

However, the climate issue dwarfs everything.

StinkyWizzleteets · 18/02/2024 13:52

When things aren’t going great at home politically or economically we go to war. It’s a distraction method to make sure the public talk about the baddies abroad and not the ones at home

China will never be a 'world superpower' let alone surpass the USA (or even Russia).

Sure, they're a 'big power' but they've not got the right combination of military, economic and cultural power to take it to the next level. They've also got a vested interest in keeping the US$ as the de facto world currency and it would be economically and socially disastrous for them if the CN¥ took its place.

Add to that they've got a gargantuan problem on the horizon with their aging and shrinking population and there's just no chance they'll be taking a central role on the world stage any time soon.

But climate change is 100% going to be a catalyst in many conflicts over the next few decades. It's not talked about often in msm but global food systems are on very shaky ground now and unlikely to improve, same with water availability. By 2080 its estimated that up to 3.5bn people will have reduced access to both.

Closer to home it's predicted that 12/17 regions of England will experience severe water stress by 2040 and there's absolutely no credible plan in place, or even being talked about seriously, to address that issue.

Fun times indeed.

I think more probably a continued series of proxy wars.

Unfortunately war is inevitable, like the next pandemic.

Well....... Unless we remove all men from positions of power and influence. There's no way a world run completely by women would be such a complete shitshow.

No. Nuclear weapons act as a deterrent to prevent that.

It's no coincidence that Russia never attacks a nato country.

MarnieMarnie · 18/02/2024 14:12

It boils down to 7billlion people jostling for food/water/power/space on a shrinking planet. There are too many people and too few resources to go round, especially when you take into account many nations who are technologically in the stone age. Until we can significantly reverse population growth things are only going to get more unstable and scary.

But China has reversed population growth and it’s only caused more problems. Not enough people working, too many elderly people. It’s also a major economic headache for many western countries.
