Help needed. Any parents with kids in Liverpool uni?

Posting here for traffic as got no response in Chat.

Wondering if anyone can help me, if you have a kid studying in Liverpool. My son is in first year in John Moore's Liverpool and is looking for a job to help him with his living expenses. He hasn't had much luck and wondering if he's looking in wrong places. His students union don't seem to be of much help in directing him to places that employ students, have any of you any suggestions or tips or advice you can give me to pass on to him? TIA

I must say I agree. I have found LJMU to be excellent in regard to my daughters dyslexia and and ongoing support.
They have been fantastic in communication and student need.
My Dd only yesterday went to the volunteering fair and has an abundance of offers regarding Mental health volunteering with training available to put on her cv.
It may be best to reach out to the university again. Failing that, certainly knock on doors, something will most def come along…. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I interviewed last year at Waitrose for a part-time, non-holiday job. Interviewed with 2 other lovely candidates - both at school in the local area. The aim of the interview was to see how we all cooperated on various tasks, so we had all chatted politely for ages. The 1st school age student came a-cropper as when completing hours paperwork they had failed to state that they were off to uni and therefore wouldnt be around during term-time. The recruiting manager interviewed them but was quite annoyed. ( I was also quite annoyed as I had to get back to work - if they weren't going to be hired that week-ish why not interview them last!!). It didnt sound as if transfer could be on the cards - which I would say is what the student was hoping for. The manager said they should have applied for a holiday position - but clearly that is holiday in the home area, not the student area.

Sainsbury used to be a lot more flexible re moves (neighbour's child experience) but perhaps that has changed.

Thank you, it is Waitrose she works at.

I will have to persuade her to ask the question, she thinks it’s ages away so doesn’t seem to think it’s relevant yet…..It would be nice if they would allow her to work in the holidays when she is back. I can see that working in two different stores could be tricky though.

BeardieWeirdie · 17/02/2024 20:31

What is he studying? Ideally he could get some relevant work.

There used to be loads of jobs advertised in bold street cafes and also in primark/stores etc. just walk through town and ask.

Can I ask how that works? My daughter has recently got a job at another supermarket and she will ask them but I was just wondering what they do with students. Do they keep them on a contract but just for holidays or are they re -employed every holiday? Also wondering if I’ll get to keep her staff discount!

She does 12 hours a week while at sixth form but planning on going to uni later this year. I’m also half hoping she might be able to transfer to a branch near her uni if at all possible.

Yes, DS was kept on and just asked to contact manager when he was back jn the holidays. And yes, we kept the staff discount throughout!

Maray1967 · 17/02/2024 20:48

PS he couldn’t transfer - was at Loughborough with just one Tesco and no vacancies, but he did a STEM course and didn’t have time to work in term time.

Excellent, thank you!

You could try asking on a local Facebook group such as Penny Lane Gossip or Aigburth Gossip. I often see posts about jobs and on there. Good luck!

Birch101 · 17/02/2024 21:16

Sorry not at uni there but when I was at Uni my friend worked for Tesco and then at holidays transferred to working for local one at home, I signed up to recruitment agencies and worked at race courses so not regular work (which worked better for me) I've also worked as a note taker in universities before.

So supermarkets
Temp agencies / office angels
Just found one for 10hrs pw at whsmith

Places like NHS will want 22.5hrs a week (imo) however he could apply for bank staff?

Whizzgosh · 17/02/2024 21:20

Mine works for a hospitality agency’ so she can work lots or not much depending on uni workload. It might be called something like like ACE but I can’t really remember.. Last time I visited there were loads of staff needed signs in cafes and bars on Smithdown road.

Slightly left field (and it might not suit him) but one of my best ever PAs was a male student who had the genius idea of targeting professional firms (lawyers/accountants) and offering secretarial/legal clerking (running diaries, booking appointments etc) services on a flexible basis. He fitted it around his studies and would wfh outside normal office hours; easy to do as we could email voice recordings/files etc. In fact, he went in to recruit other students for us and had his own mini agency operating after 6 months or do. We loved the flexibility and initiative. Also, very happy to give him glowing references when he moved on after his degree.
Plenty of accountants/solicitors/barristers chambers in Lpool to target with a cv/phone call.

@Lilifer I've messaged you.

BlueMum16 · 17/02/2024 23:00

I really can't believe someone can't find some casual or part time work in Liverpool City centre.

Shops, bars, cafes, offices, call centers, two massive football teams, an airport, numerous leisure centres, museums, ferry terminal, the docks, etc.

Suggest he gets walking round and asking directly and sign up to some agencies.

My DS qualified as a lifeguard, they then paid for him to train as swim teacher. He loves both jobs. Zero hours but suits him around college work.

popncrisps · 18/02/2024 06:18

Download indeed flex. It's an app you can use to take random shifts (my DS used it and did late night shelf stacking at supermarkets and some warehouse work)

As someone that works at two universities I find it incredibly unlikely that the uni careers service cannot find students roles to fit round their studies.

That's literally what they are there for - Every Uni preaches work experience whilst studying as employers need to see that working ethic, drive and initiative.

Your sons department/ faculty will have an employability advisor he can speak with, as well as a careers service he can walk into.

Knowing what I know, I would be raising an eyebrow pretty high if my child said they couldn't find a job and that University couldn't help them either.

LSJ careers support offer:

Hi thanks that's really good to know. He's at John Moore's but presume they would have the same student jobs advice there too? He did ask his student centre but they said they could only get him work at the open days but they aren't till summer and he's looking for work now really

Daughter at John Moores - she/flatmates/friends have various jobs including at Wetherspoons and the Liverpool Hilton, but did take a bit of perseverance to find things. She says Unitemps was quite a good site (run by LJMU?) 🙂

Brilliant thank you!!

FOOTBALL!!!!

My dd got her dream job as a steward at Anfield.
There's the same opportunities for Everton.
Liverpool also have a warehouse facility which needs staff.
Liverpool enabled qualifications in crowd safety which lead to being able to take opportunities to staff gigs etc.
Paid the living wage and offered a pension.

Liverpool city centre is literally jam packed with bars and restaurants and loads of students work there.

It's been a while since I was at Liverpool Uni but me and my friends all worked. I worked in retail, my friends worked at Gregg's, TJ Hughes, Home Bargains, a few bars.

Also stewarding at local events. Both football clubs and concerts.

Tryingtohelp12 · 18/02/2024 13:23

I would look at some caring roles - lots of these don’t necessarily involve personal care. I know of many Liverpool care provoders who need outreach/community staff to support people to access the community safely.

user1471434829 · 18/02/2024 13:36

I went to Liverpool uni it was about 20 years ago but we all used to work hospitality shifts at Everton football club. It's was a fab student job as you could just do the shifts you wanted! He wants to get signed up to all the hospitality agencies.
