annoyed at the advice of pharmasist

Have had to go to the pharmacy for athletes foot cream which has come on recently.
The pharmasist came out and said I would need to throw all my shoes and socks away? Who can afford or want to throw all their shoes away? Cant happen?

I Since read you can wash your socks at 60 degrees and also get spray for your shoes?
AIBU to think was crazy advice?

Pharmacists are basically glorified pill dispensers. Very rarely do they offer useful advice. Nothing that you could find online. It’s scary that this government is expecting them to fill the role of GPs just lately.

Wtf! Have you any idea what a pharmacy degree includes? I think you're confusing them with their assistants.

AlwaysAuntie · 17/02/2024 19:23

A few times I've been prescribed something by doctor and had to call pharmacist as the info sheet mentions a potential interaction with other medication I'm on. One time they called me to make sure I knew that I needed to leave 4hrs between two of my medicines.

Ok 🤦‍♀️

I simply used hyperbole to suggest that athletes foot does not require extreme measures like throwing all your shoes ok.

<checks surrounds- this got weird quickly>

Sorry, probably a bit grumpy today 😬

But, the thing is, you didn't use hyperbole to suggest that athlete's foot didn't need extreme measures etc. That's what you tried to do but you got the example completely wrong so it didn't make sense.

When pp pointed that out you blamed them for 'missing the point' - the point which you hadn't actually made.

Look, I understand it was a mistake and you should have said severe rather than contagious and that's fine...but the bit that got me was you blaming pp for missing the point rather than admitting you'd made a mistake.

And now again it's hand to head emojis to me.

Anyway, as I said I'm grumpy today but a simple 'oops I got that wrong' shouldn't have been too much to expect I feel.

weirder and weirder

i never actually thought leprosy was all that contagious 😅

Although I will accept that engaging with people on the internet is often a mistake.

2inabed · 17/02/2024 19:54

@Cosyblankets @Cosyblankets @BungleandGeorge He was being g treated for a chest infection he had gone in to get his prescription. He had a scan the week before and it was clear. He told the pharmacist this and still said it sounds like it could be lung cancer and was hesitant to give him the prescription.

Yeah, some people just can't admit they're wrong 😁
This is what you said -
its athletes foot not highly contagious leprosy.

An unusual thing to say if you 'never thought leprosy was all that contagious'?

OP, I would wash socks at a very high temp. Use spray for shoes. Trainers can be washed sometimes and anti-fungal detergents are available.

AppleKatie · 17/02/2024 20:02

As I said hyperbole. Exaggeration for effect?

why do you care so much?

AppleKatie · 17/02/2024 20:05

I didn’t say ‘leprosy, that well known contagious disease’

I said not highly contagious leprosy - as in not some different kind of highly contagious infectious disease- only athletes foot which isn’t that serious.

I’m not sure why I’m still engaging with you- clearly you’ve got under my skin. Well done you. That is my mistake.

Pingydingy · 17/02/2024 20:11

You said contagious @AppleKatie, you meant severe (or something similar). No problem.
The problem is you can't own it.
Everyone makes mistakes, it's okay.

Anyway I think we've derailed quite enough now!

Not personally a pharmacist, but I would say that's really uncalled for. It's not one of the easiest of courses to get into at uni.

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2024 20:23

It's probably not the easiest course either. I posted a link upthread.

He told the pharmacist this and still said it sounds like it could be lung cancer and was hesitant to give him the prescription.

Either you met the most incompetent pharmacist ever, or you've picked something up wrong. Patients with lung cancer receive the same treatment for chest infections as people without it, so even if the pharmacist was concerned about lung cancer (which would be a massive leap), there would be no reason not to dispense. If the patient was trying to buy an OTC cough medicine for a cough lasting more than 3 weeks, they are correct to query it and refer to a doctor. Were you eavesdropping?

kintra · 17/02/2024 20:24

Just waiting on the 'they just stick labels on boxes' insult 🤡

I agree, you need exceptionally good grades to be accepted.

Flottie · 17/02/2024 20:32

I wouldn’t be annoyed by the advice I’d just ignore it.

StormHawk · 17/02/2024 20:52

As a Pharmacist who has spent four years gaining a First Class Masters degree, followed by a pre-registration year, followed by further post-graduate qualifications I get a little tired of all the Pharmacist bashing threads I’ve read on Mumsnet lately.

Cornettoninja · 17/02/2024 20:56

Please don’t give opinions you find on the internet too much weight @StormHawk. people are emboldened to gob off about things they know little to nothing about.

Maybeicanhelpyou · 17/02/2024 20:57

Agree with @Cornettoninja

Chocolate101 · 17/02/2024 21:15

If you’ve worn your trainers without socks then yes best to get rid. If not it’s fine and just use a shoe spray as a precaution. Plus cream for the feet. Socks can be washed on high temps. Having said that if you keep getting a recurrent infection I would say yes to binning everything.

IndignantIguana · 17/02/2024 22:16

I had athletes for once for nearly size months. Tried everything I could find to shift it. I the end I did get rid of all my socks and it cleared up soon after. Didn't get rid of my shoes but I did wear another pair for a few months and quarantined my usual ones.

SgtBilko · 17/02/2024 22:30

2inabed · 17/02/2024 17:05

A pharmacist told a very anxious patient a few weeks ago that his chest infection could/sounds like it could be lung cancer and he needs an urgent scan. I don't listen to advice from a pharmacist unless it's something simple like a cream for dry skin etc.

My pharmacist rightly sent me to A&E when I went in to buy some cough medicine. Turned out I was having an asthma attack and I was admitted to hospital.

Edited

And if he had not queried it you may well be saying no one picked up on it. The gp didn't pick it up neither did the pharmacist. Having had a relative diagnosed with lung cancer and died less than a month later i say yes to the belt and braces approach. You cannot be too careful.

bobotothegogo · 17/02/2024 22:55

I've had some great, knowledgeable advice from pharmacists over the years. Also, on two occasions when I've been unable to get a doctors appointment, they've called the surgery and insisted I be seen.

Invaluable resource.

PuppyMonkey · 17/02/2024 23:03

I’m just here for the leprosy joke weirdness, carry on the rest of you. Grin
