AIBU to think this is just untenable?

Lsst landlord wanted to sell but did it really sneakily insisting we allowed viewings 4 months into a one year contract. We didn’t of course so were served with a Section 21 after 6 months.

We had to take current property last August (£500 month more than last place as nowhere else available). Now been served another Section 21 as landlord is not happy that we refused to pay for a professional gardener (his mate) which wasn’t in contract, or allow him to take the toilet seat that’s been in the property. This is revenge because he was unhappy about having to fix the shower and faulty dishwasher!

We are a large family and have loads of stuff. I can’t believe we’re having to pack up and move again!

AIBU to think that LL’s shouldn’t have the power to kick people out of their homes at whim and notice should be 6 months not two months?

Being evicted and being asked to leave by having a Section 21 served on you are two totally different things.

HelloMiss · 17/02/2024 15:22

kiwiane · 17/02/2024 15:18

Let them evict you - it’s crazy having to move again so soon. Stay as long as you can!
You had a right to maintain the garden yourself. The toilet seat is weird - was it an excuse to have a look around?

Then they have no reference and a bad history .... who will rent to them again if they've been forced out by bailiffs?

We wouldn't touch them

You were not being unreasonable OP. Not sure how the other posters get through life if they just randomly agree to paying extra amounts of money (the gardener) or removal of paid for things (the toilet seat).

Those things are just extortion and misadvertisment and if you'd have agreed to them then it wouldn't have ended there.

ScierraDoll · 17/02/2024 15:25

Tenants need more protection. S21 should be abolished and I would like to see a system similar to France, if the owner wants to sell he has to offer it to the tenants first and only if they refuse to buy is he able to put it on the market.

Maybe that's why op has not answered my question 🤔 I asked if she was going through the actual eviction route . Or Just renting another place.

Landlords would sell up well before ... who needs that hassle?

olympicsrock · 17/02/2024 15:38

I’m afraid you sound a very difficult tenant.

mumda · 17/02/2024 15:43

EvictedAgain · 17/02/2024 14:22

What? Who would evict a tenant that kept the house immaculate and paid rent on time for not handing over a toilet seat? It is a non issue.

He apparently can’t afford repairs but will now have the costs of evicting us and a void period!

If he's saying he can't afford repairs then get the local environmental health involved.

They can get him to do repairs which might only benefit the next tenant.

Tenants who keep the house nice and pay their rent should be treasured.

Mouldyfoot · 17/02/2024 15:58

Ignore everyone blaming you.

Renting in the UK is absolutely disgusting.

no you should not have to pay anyone for something not in your contract.

and no, why would you let a plumber walk off with something you’ll be financially responsible for as per your check in inventory with no paper trail to prove your innocence around said toilet seat.

I feel for you, landlords are wankers.

Mouldyfoot · 17/02/2024 16:02

Wolfpa · 17/02/2024 14:43

Could this be a problem with you/ your family? It seems unlikely that you would have been served eviction notices two times in short succession.

Clearly you have no understanding of renting right now.

I have solid references, keep the house immaculate, pay rent on time, perfect tenant.

I have had 8 section 21s in 10 years. I’ve done nothing wrong ever.

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 17/02/2024 16:04

I’m confused and puzzled. Why did the landlord want the toilet seat from the property he’s renting out?? Couldn’t he have bought a new loo seat in Homebase?

Mulhollandmagoo · 17/02/2024 16:05

I probably does stipulate in your contract about maintenance of the garden, ours did when we rented, I think most do.

It is shit though having to pack up and move. Honestly OP in your position I would have given the toilet seat back, and agree to the gardener - begrudgingly though, as being homeless or having to find another rental on a time limit is the least preferable option.

I agree with a pp that the current system doesn't really work for anyone right now.

Floralnomad · 17/02/2024 16:13

YABU , the LL may well be a complete knob but the bottom line is he owns the house and you do sound like a belligerent tenant . If you speak to people in the same tone as you write I’m not surprised LL doesn’t want to keep you on .

Popquizzer · 17/02/2024 16:14

You sound difficult and argumentative. I can see why he wants you gone. Didn't you know that would be the outcome when you decided to launch a war about a naff toilet seat?

If Leylandii aren't trimmed properly on a regular basis, they die back and need to be removed at a high cost. It's possible you might have cut them back too much and exposed brown branches where green wouldn't grow back again.

I'm not sure why you think someone would want to rent to a person who seems be constantly spoiling for a fight.

It was some kind of posh one I believe. The OP said he said he couldn’t afford to replace it if it got broken. I just want to know was the plumber going to put on a replacement? Because you can’t leave someone without a toilet seat!

Babyroobs · 17/02/2024 16:19

EvictedAgain · 17/02/2024 14:17

Wow, so people are really saying that I should have rolled over and given into LL’s unreasonable demands? Paying £200 to LL’s mate twice a year to cut his hedge despite having no legal obligation to and already paying a very high rent?

Serfdom is still alive and kicking in UK in 2024.

Disgusting.

I agree. they charge massive rents and won't even pay for garden maintenance. Most are just ruthless and greedy.

It certainly does not stipulate anything about the hedge being cut by a professional twice a year, no.

Why on earth would I lie about that? Do you think I can’t read a tenancy agreement?

It states trees and shrubs must be pruned, grass cut and weeds removed. DH pruned the massive climbing plant and the other trees and shrubs in the autumn as well bead trimming the hedge. Grass hasn’t really grown since last cut in October seeing as its bloody winter.

With your outright hostile and antagonistic attitude on here I can see why landlords don’t want you in their properties. I’m a renter, it helps to have your business face and attitude front and present when dealing with landlords, not your bitchy attitude face.

Why on earth would the Leylandi be the tenant’s responsibility though? Any normal person would have arranged professional to deal with something that needs professional care, not demand the tenant provide it when they have no obligation to!

Difficult and argumentative? Because I’m not a mug?

Yes, LL don’t have to put up with arsey tenants with the high demand for rentals at the moment.

Well not being a mug seems to be keeping you in stable accomodation for a long time lately doesn't it?
