Aibu to want a new shed?

Myself and my husband are trying to come to an agreement over something and wondering if anyone can offer their opinion.
We moved into our house 12 years ago but the house is at least 20. When we moved in, the house had a lot of stuff from the previous owners which we gradually got round to replacing but we're very happy to have whilst we started out.
Now we're getting our garden done spending $$$ on it and husband wants to leave the shed which was there when we moved in as it will save us a few hundred. We have the money to replace it.
My argument is the old shed will take away from the newly decorated garden his argument is it will save us a few quid.
My other thoughts are what if the shed needs to be replaced after the garden gets done what happens then to the garden, will we need to get the garden patched back up?
AIBU to want a new shed in my new garden?

If the shed is structurally sound, then I'd keep it. You can repaint it or put trellis around it if it's just not 'pretty'. That way, you could spend the money you've saved on some lovely garden furniture instead.

Don't forget that a new shed will look very aged in a year or two!

Can we have a pic? Can’t decide if you need a new one or not without seeing it.

GrandHighPoohbah · 16/02/2024 15:43

I am team New Shed. It's much more cohesive to do it all at once if you can afford it. Plus you will probably clear it out, and it's helpful to be able to get rid of the junk with all the other rubbish.

CatherinedeBourgh · 16/02/2024 15:43

You don't need to destroy a garden to change a shed.

SoupDragon · 16/02/2024 15:45

I am currently in the process of replacing a shed. It's turned into a far bigger job than expected as the base was rotten so I've decided to relocate the shed.

I'm Team New Shed - get it done as part of the garden refurb!

cozycashmere · 16/02/2024 15:47

Here is a photo of it, the bottom side has some panels missing and the waterproof lining on the inside is coming away I've had to patch it back up. We keep our dryer and a fridge in the shed.

Keep the shed, paint it if desired and put it in a location where it will be easy to replace in future if needed. It seems silly to get a new one if there's nothing wrong with the one you have.

cozycashmere · 16/02/2024 15:49

@GrandHighPoohbah we are in the middle of clearing it out actually and we both agreed we don't need 1/2 the junk we have in their now. Our children are getting older so we don't need a lot of space now.

The shed looks fine to me. What's the condition of the roof? What about the floor, and is it damp from contact from the ground? Adding guttering makes a big difference.

Unless you change where you want to have the shed in your garden, to take it down and install a new one will not damage your garden.

ginasevern · 16/02/2024 17:05

Nice shed.

Frasers · 16/02/2024 18:02

Looks fine to me id not replace that.

DimplesToadfoot · 16/02/2024 18:12

My old shed recently got chewed into by rats, the first time they went through the wall, I patched that up with wire mesh, then they chewed up from the bottom

My shed was painted every year, had a sound roof and looked in good nick, the rats realised before I did that the wood was actually old and easy to chew through.

I bought a new shed ... if you keep a fridge in yours then I suggest your hubby agrees to you getting a new shed

cozycashmere · 16/02/2024 18:21

I've a few suspicions we've had rats in it at the moment too. I haven't seen them but lots of building work going on in fields around us disturbing them and I found a few holes at the base and dog food bag too had a hole in it. Husband thinks holes can be filled with some wood etc. We also have decking beside shed which would give rats easy access.

It’s a lovely shed.
I can see where you are coming from, but personally I’d keep it for a bit and then see if it needs replacing.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 16/02/2024 18:33

I am unsure which way to go! On the one hand the shed looks nice, dog food etc could be stored in plastic bins. (I use old wheelie bins for cat food and litter).

However, is this your forever home? Are you looking at staying decades? Do you like doing maintenance? If trues to the former and no to the last, then maybe look at having a concrete prefabricated shed or a metal shed for durability and less maintenance. If you think you are moving in less than a decade then I probably
would keep the old one. Or… maybe swap
out the shed entirely and go for a sun room style shed and a greenhouse? This would depend on entirely on what you want to use the building for - is just storage or will you want a little storage but somewhere to sit and want to do more propagation etc and would use a greenhouse.
finally! What if you just got rid of it entirely and maybe had a large outdoor plastic storage box from keter? If that all you want - would look good for years and zero maintenance, lockable and moveable if you move house or want to reconfigure the space.

DimplesToadfoot · 16/02/2024 18:34

I didn't think the rats would come up through the floor, there is the original wood, then Laminate down, then vinyl, then carpet, (I kept rabbits in there) and the rats still chewed through it all, the only thing that has stopped them has been wire mesh, any wood I put blocking them the rats chewed through, they are determined little buggers

I know the rats wouldn't be able to chew into a fridge but they do like to chew wires and that could cost just as much as a new shed .... thinking of ideas to put to hubby

Picklestop · 16/02/2024 18:35

The shed doesn’t need replacing.

MargaretThursday · 16/02/2024 18:57

Are you hoping it'll obey the sign and become a two storey summer house?

Nannyfannybanny · 16/02/2024 20:46

Shreds are incredibly expensive! I would repair it. Any animal feed has to be kept in sealed tins, bird food, fish food, etc. mice rats, chew and get through tiny spaces.

LlynTegid · 16/02/2024 20:51

Keep the shed I think, it looks a lot better than many I have seen.

passiveconstellation · 16/02/2024 20:58

Do your neighbours a favour and don't leave food in sheds unless it's in rodent-proof containers.

And call pest control to deal with the rat problem before it escalates.

I would be severely hacked off if I ended up with rats in my garden because my neighbours were keeping dog food in their garden.

Dapbag · 16/02/2024 21:03

I would spend the money doing any essential repairs to your already great looking shed.

When I've replaced things recently I've found that they are of inferior quality to the old one despite paying an arm and a leg. Have a look around at new ones and check their price and quality...it might make your mind up for you.

Nannyfannybanny · 16/02/2024 22:45

It's exactly because of our stupid neighbours we ended up with rodents, the rats especially carry diseases and they stink.
