Weekly shop cost come down?

Bookworm3459 · 16/02/2024 08:00

Not seen one of these threads in a while. Aibu in thinking weekly has come down a bit since peak food prices last year?

We're on about £70-80 for 2 adults 1 baby. im sure it was more last year or maybe weve just changed our habits without realising

I remember it being £40-50 a week five years ago. Pretty impossible now

@Tigandgab I noticed this exact price rise in Asda too- must be a supplier issue maybe?

I spent 216 in Asda yesterday (although I did buy 6 bottles of conditioner reduced from £8 to £2 and a hair dye, and household bits which bumps it all up) - but even so. My online shop is normally 150/170 a week - but I’d noticed my cupboards were looking really sparse. We keep virtually nothing in ‘stock’ now, I could probably do 2-3 days from the freezer and cupboard whereas previously I could have lasted longer. We’re using up all our reserves and only replacing what we need week on week.

No, it's really not here. Two adults two kids and a toddler, we spend around £120 a week, sometimes more if we need nappies or wipes which we buy in bulk. And one of my kids has as school dinners which will end next year. We have really felt it this week having him home for lunch! So frustrating, it feels never ending.

If it's cheaper it's cheaper, how can that be something we can vote on? The evidence is there on your receipt

Some things have definitely come down in price while others are going up, does anyone buy the exact same shop each week to notice every change?

I always wonder when I read threads about shopping prices whether I'm unusual in that mine costs different every week depending on what I'm buying, the range could be £30 ;to £40, everyone else seems to be spend the same to within a tenner a week

I think most of us are working out an average over a month, I certainly am, rather than saying that they spend absolutely £120 every week…

Imisssleep2 · 18/02/2024 08:28

Your friend who claims to spend £40 a week is probably doing 3 or 4 non meat/fish meals a week to achieve this and the amount doesn't include other household items most buy with their weekly shop like washing products etc. they may also not be including lunches if these are purchased at work.

When me and my husband first brought our first house in 2011, I used to budget £40 a week on the food and house shopping and it was fairly easily achieved.

Now as a family of 2 adults, 1 x 3year old and a newborn we spend about £80 a week and I do batch cooking etc and bulk buy some products to save money too.

A few products have come down by a few pennies, like milk, but it's not really noticeable from last year to us I don't think, I think you've just adapted your shopping habits

I imagine the orange juice price rise is due to the extremely poor orange harvest. The price of orange juice concentrate pretty much doubled in a year.

5thCommandment · 18/02/2024 08:56

Waitrose prices seem to have stabilised, spending around £175 a week but I prioritise good food and premium cuts, sourdough bread etc. you are what you eat.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/02/2024 09:10

Certain things in Aldi are lower than they were 4 months ago.
Norpak went up to £2.49, gradually came back down to £2.29, lactose free milk back to £1.19 from £1.29 - the odd 10p here and there on things.

For now.

Dontdeclutterthemagic · 18/02/2024 09:23

We are veggie with an allotment, so a little insulated from the price rises. I've noticed dairy prices have dropped a little and there are more offers available.

2 adults 1 primary 1 toddler, over the last month or so its been £65-£75 per week rather than £80.

Wow, that’s crazy! Have you looked at raw food suppliers for the dogs? I raw feed my labradoodle who eats 500g a day & get all his food, including treats for £60pm delivered

Who do you use for the raw food?

A friend of mine took the price rises very seriously and meal planned a lot and claims she spends about £40 for two adults each week. I've tried to plan a bit more and never get this low, no idea how she does it

We are the same, max £40 / week 2 adults. Mainly veggie, massive freezer, batch cook etc. Make use of Farmfoods, Home Bargains etc. Buy reduced items & freeze. Meal Plan. Play all the supermarket loyalty schemes - across 2 accounts. Buy discounted shopping vouchers through work.

In essence, it's mainly 7 Breakfasts, lunches & dinners each plus some household essentials.

Toodlepip100 · 18/02/2024 11:30

I am attempting to only spend the minimal & have managed to meal plan which i am really bad. I have enabled bad feeders in my household & so that's a challenge. but i have over this month compare to last month managed to spend only £500 .Family of 5.fridge has looked bare & kids not impressed with stuff running out & no replacements!!I resent giving more money to these greedy shops. Tesco always worked out more expensive personally ,so I try to avoid that.. click & collect has been helpful.

LanaL · 18/02/2024 13:00

I think it’s still very expensive!
it’s usually around £100-120 per week , for the “big shop” that I do on a Sunday ( I spend £30 in the butchers then about £70-90 in asda . However , that’s just Mon - Fri meals . We don’t have the children on a Friday so usually me and my husband will just have whatever’s in or if we might have a takeaway. Saturday is pizza night usually- we just grab some pizzas whilst we’re out Saturday day ( so there’s at least another £10 ) Sunday is usually a roast , we will grab the veg on Saturday too and sometimes we have meat in from the bundle I get or we will get a chicken on the day ) . That main shop includes packed lunches for us all and toiletries ( depending on what’s left sometimes I’ll pop out in the week ) - 2 adults , 3 children . But I always end up having to pop out for bits and bobs through the week , I would say I probably spend an extra £50 - £60 through the week and for the bits I get over the weekend .

So far this weekend , we did a quick shop just for lunches and todays dinner just now (£50) due to time . Will get the rest tomorrow that will be about another £30 probably . I’ll also go to the butchers tomorrow I usually get a £30 bundle but we have steak and some chicken left over still so will have some left over so will probably spend £20 instead. On top of that we pay £30 per month for our dogs food ( he has raw food and it’s £30 for a month supply.

I feel like everything is so expensive! One thing that gets me is the amount I spend on crisps - it’s only a small thing but I get a box a week and it’s £5 ! It didn’t used to be that much , this is for 20 bags .

Mamatolittlemonsters · 18/02/2024 13:15

I follow a page on Facebook and she’s posted something lately showing that the prices on the shopping list have gone down since November

We have 2 adults and 2 children (1 in nappies) and try and spend about £100 a week

I got organised this week and wrote a list of my “normal” weekly items and was actually surprised it comes to about £60 a week. Luckily I don’t need everything every week (this week I managed to not need nappies and wipes) I also priced up a few of our favourite recipes as if I had to buy each ingredient so I can work out what I need each week a bit easier along with the cost

we are also lucky stuff like toilet rolls and cleaning things are bulk bought it Costco.

the cost definitely hasn’t come down as much as it’s gone up but has definitely come down slightly!

trying to cut as much down as we can so we can go out for a meal for our anniversary and try and get some saved towards Christmas so we can avoid using credit cards for the first time!

lobsterkiller · 18/02/2024 13:27

I've noticed a few bits reducing in price as others rise. I spend about 40/50 per week. I'm on my own and don't eat meat/fish or drink. I genuinely don't know how families are coping.

Missjd87 · 18/02/2024 17:21

Catza · 16/02/2024 08:13

I haven't noticed it. I think I am spending about as much if not more than the same time last year. Our food bill is about £600 a month for three adults and a teen, not counting work lunches for the boys.

Similar to ours, three adults and a teen
however I get lunches for two of the adults in this two.

Buggathis · 18/02/2024 19:40

5 of us is about £160 before Christmas was about 130 😳 just said to my husband yesterday how unreal it has got!

Does your friend have a well stocked pantry or shop differently to you.

We a family of 5 (3 adults and 15 & 16 ) and my weekly shop is around £90 for fresh milk, bread, fruit & veg and any bits and pieces for that weeks meals.

But I always have a well stocked pantry and freezers but I tend to get that delivered or go to Costco.

So we now spend about £700 rather then the £500 a month 3 years ago. But looking at my weekly spend on food it looks like I do really well on food shopping.

Ive really noticed an increase this week. DH been away and instead of us normally doing a big shop between Aldi and Tesco I have gone to Sainsbury's twice. Feel like ive got not a lot and Spent £140 quid between the 2 visits for only myself and DD. Ill be back to my usual shops next week!

Sainsbury's is a killer.

AelinGalathynius · 19/02/2024 10:08

We are a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 children under 6, 2 of them in nappies) and I think we spend about 500-600 a month. I say “I think” because I haven’t dared adding it all up recently 🫣 I have noticed the odd thing going down in price, but the vast majority going up.

Lifebeganat50 · 19/02/2024 13:16

I bought petrol today for the first time in a few weeks and noticed it had gone up 5p a litre 🙄

Petrol goes up and down daily, by me it's currently around the cheapest it's been for a while

Who do you use for the raw food?

I use a local supplier that has a number of different brands. They do bulk offers so I look at what suits my dog best & go for that. It seems to work really well & isnt much more expensive than tinned food/kibble
