Neighbours dog left alone for hours

NosyNeighbourDogWorry · 15/02/2024 18:08

That's the jist of it.

My neighbour have got a puppy, a cane corso cross.
The wife and kids leave for work&school around 7:30 am and husband leaves around 8am. Then wife comes back with the kids around 3:30 pm.

For all of this time , from 8 to 3:30, the puppy stays in a crate. I know this because the puppy keeps barking for the whole day and the noise comes only from one corner of the wall. I share a wall with the neighbours.
This has been going on for more 6 months now. No one comes to check in on the puppy during the day.

Poor pup barks relentlessly whole day. I stay at home with my baby and I can hear him continuously.

AIBU to consider this animal abuse.
If this is animal abuse, what do I do?

Have you spoken to them?

Changingplace · 15/02/2024 18:11

Have you told them the puppy barks the whole time? I don’t think it’s necessarily too long to leave a dog, mine would be fine for that length of time, he’d snooze quietly - the time isn’t the issue the lack of training/noise is.

NosyNeighbourDogWorry · 15/02/2024 18:11

No I haven't. I don't know what to say exactly.

‘Hello neighbour, did you know that your dog barks when left continuously from 8am - 3.30pm every day?’

Thank you, that helps. I was not sure if the time is too long for the dog.

Animal cruelty, I'd report it

XenoBitch · 15/02/2024 18:14

That is so sad. And older dog that is used to it would be ok to be left that long... a puppy, no. Especially in a crate.

I don't think the RSPCA would do anything if the pup is otherwise healthy, fed etc.
I think a chat with your neighbour would be a good idea... and tell them the poor pup sounds distressed.

Haha, thanks. Yes I could do that.
I don't see them very often, so will do that next time I see them.

I am worried it could come off as not minding my own business.

7 and a half hours is too long to leave a dog for 5 days a week. My dog is 13 years old and spends most of his time napping but I wouldn't leave him that long without going out for toilet.

You can't seriously believe it's ok to leave a puppy in a crate for that amount of time ? It's only a problem if it makes a noise!? Dear lord I despair, that poor dog and given the breed it's even more important that it's properly taken care of, when it's older if left all day with no exercise or stimulation it could be a serious problem.

It very much IS your business as you have to endure the constant barking for hours every day!

It would drive anyone crackers!

IMakeCrapCakes · 15/02/2024 18:42

Report it to who?

Nobody would be bothered about this sort of thing.

Herdinggoats · 15/02/2024 18:44

I think if you want this to come across well (regardless of why you are really speaking to them) it needs to come across as making them aware the puppy might be upset- and not that they are disturbing you.

Riverlee · 15/02/2024 18:44

That’s awful. Definantly report it.

LimeViewer · 15/02/2024 18:46

That's very selfish of them. Very nasty to hear for you and your poor baby. And the puppy might be unhappy too.

mondaytosunday · 15/02/2024 18:47

They shouldn't be keeping a dog in a crate all day every day, but it's the barking that's disturbing you . So tell them. They may be totally unaware and hopefully it will prompt them to do something.

Galeforcewindatmywindow · 15/02/2024 18:49

Maybe someone would come out and check on it if you weren't sure it wasn't an xl bully....
Cruel Bastards. If owners used the description of cage not crate more would get done about using them..

Minfilia · 15/02/2024 18:51

Even older dogs shouldn’t be left alone for more than 4 hours.

Puppies should have significantly less alone time.

I bet it’s crated overnight too. Poor bugger. Cruel owners who should not have a dog!

Doglover19 · 15/02/2024 18:52

I have a dog who I didn't realise was barking when I left him at home one time, I literally was gone just over an hour and my neighbour came banging my door coz he howled and barked the whole time. I wasn't aware and tbh I wasn't happy at the time due to how he told me but I was grateful coz I wasn't aware and could do something about it so the dog wasn't so anxious being left by himself.

Maybe they ain't aware and should appreciate you telling them for the benefit of the dogs wellbeing.
They need to find ways to help the pup stay by himself or find a sitter for him or someone to walk him if they are out the house a while ...
Tell them first and see how they deal with it.
