Fracture collarbone 13DD

Posting here for advice.

13 year old DD fractured her clavique while skiing on Monday; she saw a dr, got an x-ray and a sling, advice reg ice and tablets. And they told to go to dr when home. Anyway A&E is a nightmare and queues are long; don’t want to be there for 5 hours.

So, do we need to see dr again? Maybe a specialist through my private medical insurance? What sort of especialist? Or should we just wait until it heals? Can she go to school? The sling she got is a bit rubbish. Should I buy a better one in Amazon?

We did manage to get 2 more x-rays at the hospital but they sent us to queue to A&E; there wasn’t anyone available to register us.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Call your gp for advice

If you have private medical insurance call them and arrange to see an orthopaedic specialist. Your local private hospital will be able to guide you who is best to see. Probably just needs another check xray at some point to ensure healing.

To be fair, no one on here can give you specific answers about school and how she's healing/prognosis etc as no one has seen the x rays or examiner your daughter. Basic advice can be given but if you've been advised to see a doctor then that's what you need to do........

Simple clavicle fractures normally sort themselves out, when we see them in the emergency department just offer a broad arm (triangular) sling and discharge with advice. However, without seeing the xray, and the patient to know if the fracture is displaced or angulated you can't really offer online advice on this.

Most emergency departments have links to a fracture clinic for follow ups which is run by orthopaedic doctors. You should be able to attend A+E, see thr triage nurse and get a referral for this without needing to wait to be seen properly by a clinician. I do this regularly for patients who have been seen and treated out of area to ensure they get appropriate local follow up.

Ask gp to refer to fracture clinic

Most collarbone fractures have to be left to heal on their own. Ask your GP for a referral to the fracture clinic.

Whether not she goes to school depends on how much pain she’s in, whether it’s on the side of her dominant hand and how much she can comfortably do. Also things like carrying bags etc might be a problem. It’s just a common sense one, really.
