To think I’m not even being paid minimum wage??

FFRC4th · 15/02/2024 14:49

Okay, so maths isn’t my strong point but I’m on £20,000 a year (yes I know it’s a crap wage) Going by my payslips, my wage works out at £9.62 an hour, based on a 40 hour week.

I thought the current minimum wage was £10.42, increasing in April to 11.44?

Have they been paying me illegally or have I got the maths wrong?

Are you allowing for your break being unpaid?

Containerhome · 15/02/2024 14:53

20k ÷ 12 = 1666.66 a month
1666.66 ÷ 4 weeks is 416.66 a week
416.66 ÷ 40 hours = £10.41

£10.41 an hour?

Or I have I got it wrong? Maths also isn't my strong point!

No I don’t think I am. But the total gross monthly amount on my payslip matches what the salary calculator says would be an hourly age of £9.62 an hour.

No, that looks about right. The only thing that’s thrown me is when on salary calculator it says my gross monthly income is 1666 (which it is on my payslip) which apparently works out at £9.62 an hour?!

Is that after tax?

The maths is slightly wrong here as 4 x 12 = 48. If you are paid four weekly it would be 13 payments.

I make a 40 hour week on minimum wage to be £21,673. A 35 hour week would be £18,964.

You actually need to divide the 20k by 52 for weeks of the year, then divide that by the number of hours worked, if its a 40 hour week it's 9.61
A lot of companies pay a 36 or 37 hour week, deducting lunch. That makes it's 10.41

Ponderingwindow · 15/02/2024 14:58

There are not precisely 4 weeks in a month.

a working year of 40 hours a week is 52x40 = 2080 hours.

20,000 / 2080 is 9.61

Containerhome · 15/02/2024 14:58

I stand corrected!!

CatsLikeBoxes · 15/02/2024 14:59

How many hours a day do you work? How long is your lunch break?

blobby10 · 15/02/2024 14:59

I divided £20K by 52 weeks = £384.61 weekly wage. Divided by 40 gives you £9.62 per hour. this is how we work out our employees weekly wage so in our company you would be being underpaid. The current minimum wage rate would give you £416.80 per week which if you multiply by 48 weeks gives you £20k. Do you get holidays paid?

Tinkerbyebye · 15/02/2024 14:59

I get the same as you b40x12= 2080.

20000/2080= 9.61

but do you do 40 hours are are you a thallus working 8 hours a day plus breaks?

pinkpixie83 · 15/02/2024 15:00

£20,000 per year
/52 weeks = 384.62/week
/37.5 = 10.25/hr /35= 10.99/hr

How many hours a week do you work?

Topofthemountain · 15/02/2024 15:01

How old are you OP?

ToWonderWhyIBother · 15/02/2024 15:01

how many hours do you work ? What age are you ?

I'm in payroll and this is how I would do it

If you work 35 hrs x 52 = 1820

£20,000 / by 1820 hrs + 10.98 rounded up to 10.99 per hour

but as I don't know how many hours you work or what age you are I can't say wether you are being underpaid

FFRC4th · 15/02/2024 15:01

So I work 9-5 5 days a week with 1 hour for lunch but I can’t see anything in my contract to say whether that’s unpaid or paid. I assume with the majority of places it would be unpaid?

OP posts:
MagentaRocks · 15/02/2024 15:04

You are working 35 hours a week. Your lunch break will be unpaid. So you are getting 10.98 ish an hour

ToWonderWhyIBother · 15/02/2024 15:04

Yes your lunch is unpaid

If you are 21 or older you are being paid more than the minimum wage at the moment

However in April you will need to be increased to £11.44 per hour

I worked those hours for decades with a variety of employers, and was always told it was 35 hours a week. When I worked 9-5.30 it was 37.5 hours. So the lunch breaks were always unpaid.

I'd tend to go with the reconciliation done by @ToWonderWhyIBother which makes it £10.99 an hour.

purpleme12 · 15/02/2024 15:04

Following

It's quite possibly you are underpaid OP.
Can't help with working it out but years ago I realised I was being paid less than minimum wage. I spoke to my team leader, and she spoke to HR who corrected it and backdated it as needed.
It had been since the minimum wage had gone up.
So it can happen.

PSEnny · 15/02/2024 15:04

So you work 7 hours a day, 1 hour is unpaid lunch. 5x7 = 35. You are paid to work for 35 hours a week.

FLOWER1982 · 15/02/2024 15:05

So you work 35 hours a week.

Sprogonthetyne · 15/02/2024 15:06

Do you actually work 40 hours, not 37.5 with a half hour break each day?

Do you get any benefits in kind?

Are you looking at gross or take home pay?

Are you on pay per hour or is it a salary for a specific role, which takes you 40h, but could take others less?

Are you over 23?

If non of these apply, then it looks wrong to me.

20k/52 weeks = 384.61/40 = 9.61/hour

No that calculation is wrong, because if you're saying there's 12 months at 4 weeks each that's only 48 weeks but there's actually 52 weeks a year.

If you're on 20k divide that by 52 weeks, then divide that by 40 hours = £9.61/hour

FFRC4th · 15/02/2024 15:07

Okay, thanks so much for helping with that guys.

have a meeting with my manager in the morning as I’ve recently taken on a lot more responsibility for no extra pay and that, coupled with the minimum wage increase in April, means I think I need to discuss pay with him.
