Needs a wipe....

Ugh at this phrase on FB selling sites.

Look I know you are selling three ceiling pendants for £50 but if it needs a wipe just bloody do it! No one wants to import your dust and grime into their house.

Even things I've given away for free have been cleaned before they've gone to a new owner.

Also 'just want what I paid for it'...Hmm

Yes I see this all the time. Yesterday it was a booster seat that attaches to a table and the advert said “it needed a really good scrub.” Unsurprisingly, no takers so far. Some people are just lazy- expecting people to pay for dirty goods.

I am about to offer DS’ high back booster for free (no accidents obviously, I wouldn’t get second hand but plenty do) and I’ve taken all covers off and washed them and waiting for them to dry.

Twopintsprick81 · 15/02/2024 09:07

Yeah, I don't understand the people who want what they paid for it. Like what buyer thinks 'I'm looking for a highchair-I can either go to John Lewis and buy a brand spanking new one for £50 or I can pop round to some strangers house and buy a grubby, food encrusted one for the exact the same price..🤔'.
It's the reason why when you go into a charity shop, everything is quite a bit cheaper than the original price.

Can't decide if these people are just stupid, greedy or both.

SalmonEile · 15/02/2024 09:10

I haaaate “needs a wipe” because most of the time it needs a lot more than that

KnottyKnitting · 15/02/2024 09:22

I have seen this on the Freebay type groups. Fair enough if you are offering something free that would otherwise end up in land fill but if I am actually paying for something then I would expect it to be clean!

Bluevelvetsofa · 15/02/2024 09:43

I shudder when I look at some of the furniture advertised. It looks as though it’s never seen a vacuum cleaner or a fabric cleaner, never been plumped up and never cared for. Even if it’s cheap or free, why would you want to introduce something filthy into your home.

Someone locally wanted to know where to buy a new pop up sink thing. The picture was gross. Everyone told her to just clean it. It didn’t need replacing, just scrubbing.

CruCru · 15/02/2024 09:45

The “just want what I paid for it” is weird. I can’t believe anyone agrees to pay the full price for secondhand.

Bkjahshue · 15/02/2024 09:45

I’d be embarrassed to give something away that was visibly dirty; I give things away quite a lot and always make sure they’re clean

FionnulaTheCooler · 15/02/2024 09:48

I admit I've done this, with one of those baby trampolines with the handle on it. DD had outgrown it and admittedly it was a bit grubby from being out in the garden in all weathers and I couldn't be arsed to go and scrub it. I posted it for free and someone came and got it the same day so it can't have been that much of an issue for them.

Catza · 15/02/2024 09:56

I sold things that "needed a wipe" before due to being stored in a garage. I lightly cleaned them but I didn't want the buyer to think they are in pristine condition (and the price reflected that). And while they were clean, I am sure the person would want to give them a good wipe nonetheless.

KimberleyClark · 15/02/2024 10:11

Ridiculous, “just want what I paid for it”. If it’s not brand new, unused, in original packaging, it’s not worth what you paid for it.

I guess this makes sense tbh because if it really only just needed a wipe they'd do it. Gross.

I think it's fine if it's free

Comedycook · 15/02/2024 10:17

I saw a photo of a crumpled shirt on vinted the other day and the seller had written in the description "just needs an iron". I mean, how long does it take to iron a shirt!

Ridiculous, “just want what I paid for it”. If it’s not brand new, unused, in original packaging, it’s not worth what you paid for it.

Even if it is brand new & in original packaging it's not worth what you paid for it - they bought it on purpose from a shop that sells the item because they wanted one in that specific style and colour, but now they want a randomer browsing on FB marketplace to impulse-buy it for full price!

Wrong thread sorry!!

APickUpFullOfPinkCarnations · 15/02/2024 11:30

NEEDS GONE pisses me off too.

TheLambtonWorm · 15/02/2024 11:30

"will need dismantling" outsourced labour.

BobbyBiscuits · 15/02/2024 11:32

That is gross, and sounds like a masking phrase for 'has a scratch, is damaged, but I won't wipe it clean before selling as it will be obvious to buyers that it's flawed'. Who doesn't clean things before they sell them? Clearly a bunch of people but it sounds like BS to me.

Coolblur · 15/02/2024 11:36

'Needs a wipe' is similar to 'worn once' in my opinion.

Needs a wipe - needs a really good scrub, but it will take me too much time, and I'm not convinced the dirt will come off.

'Worn once' - worn several times but still in reasonable condition, so I'll lie in order to maximise the price. Except for wedding dresses, but people still seem to think 'worn once' will boost the price Hmm

See also the many sofas for sale that were 'new' 6 months ago. Surely there can't be that many people unexpectedly moving into tiny houses that their furniture doesn't fit into.
