Honestly, it is the best fun. It was unheard of for girls to play when I was at school, and I know that has changed radically, and not it is normal for girls to play.
Women's football was still banned when I was at junior school, on the grounds that we were too good at it and took attention away from the men. Even when the ban was lifted, there were no woman players, coaches, commentators or role models.
As a result my entire generation missed out. i started with walking football in my early 50s. Playing in mixed teams with men who had played for three quarters of a century or more! Guess who had the advantage! i have progressed to women's running football now, and play centre forward, although I am quite a mean defender as well.
Really, really, give it a try, it is great for fitness and fun and very sociable. There are more and more opportunities for women, there is walking football and 5 a side football, as well as women's soccer. If you are young enough to have benefitted from lessons at school, you are years ahead of me! But if you are my generation, it honestly isn't too late. Come and see what all the fuss is about.
It is a woman's game!
