To think this is ridiculous for world book day??

Not the day but some of the ridiculous costumes. It's supposed to be a celebration of books and authors but aalli keep seeing every year is kids in superhero costumes or a character from their favourite film.
There's so many characters to choose from, why can't they choose an actual book? Something written as a book that the child has read and enjoyed.
I've just seen a costume that really takes the biscuit. A young, primary aged child dressed as.... Del boy. Yep, Del boy from only fools and horses.
Come on!!
I'm sure it's very funny and clever but it's not only a sitcom and very much not a book, it's an adult sitcom and very much not for kids.

As a book lover and children's author, I just find it a bit sad.

I did a mixture of both for mine when they were young. I made a few costumes when I could and sent them in costumes they already had in their dressing boxes at other times. One year I sent my DS in a stormtrooper costume, at the time his absolute favourite book series was a star wars one. The year my DD went as a Disney Princess, her favourite books at the time were a Lego Disney princess series. Another year Winnie the witch was her favourite, so she went in a halloween witches costume. They already had the costumes and were loving the books. That's what it's about. Not a costume making competition for the grown ups. One year a boy came dressed in a home made Mr Toad costume, despite him never reading the Wind in the Willows. It obviously made the parents feel more high brow than the Disney/Marvel kids, but to what end?

sarahc336 · 14/02/2024 21:57

I too hate it, it's pointless so if my kids want to wear a Disney princess dress they already have I'm happy with that 🤣

10ThousandSpoons · 14/02/2024 21:49

Or... get this.. they could not dress up and just read a book for an hour

Yeah, that’s pretty much the point I was making, really, ie the important thing is reading and not costumes.

I agree that the dressing up stuff is pointless, personally, but if the school is intent on making them do it, then I’m all for parents making a bare minimum of effort with the costume.

Children find it hard to understand what 'proper' books are as opposed to cheaply produced, badly written paperbacks sold in supermarkets or places like The Works. As such, when my daughter was in KS1 she always wanted to go as a Disney princess - she had the dresses, she had books with them in and to be fair, had never actually seen any of the films. To her, that was as legitimate as going as My Naughty Little Sister or Katy Morag or whatever. How do you argue with that? I'm a teacher and dread WBD, especially now the curriculum is so full. It seems to have become completely pointless.

A lot of the Disney princesses originated from books.

Someone in my daughters class dressed as Mrs Hinch. It was in about Year 2 I think.

This is actually brilliant next-level trolling by the parents, in many ways

10ThousandSpoons · 14/02/2024 21:49

Shes a book character then

Umm yes but the OP is arguing that they aren’t really book characters if they originate from a film

Changington · 14/02/2024 22:01

My kids' school they "dress as an adjective". So it could be sporty, or pink, or fancy, or shiny, or dirty...

The school basically just says "rummage for something you've already got and get your kid to come up with an adjective to describe it". Job done.

Allofaflutter · 14/02/2024 22:02

At my kids school a lad turned up with a sleeping bag and an oversized lolly. The very hungry caterpillar!

whathappenedno · 14/02/2024 22:03

I love reading. I role model reading for joy. We all read for fun in our house. We also regularly visit our local library (which I work at!)

I hate world book day. It doesn't change anyones attitude to reading. and people are faced with using a costume their child owns (typically superhero or princess) or forking out for a new costume.

We haven't been told what's happening yet. (School loves a last minute text)

But my ds has a blue wool jumper so I'm sending him as Charlie Buckey. (Which he's just finished)

Princessbananahamock · 14/02/2024 22:04

This will be my child’s last time doing this, I won’t be buying anything (and I never have) just stuff we have in the house. These dress up days get on my tits. So I’m thinking 🤔 Suit , handcuffs and tester pot of grey paint.

Seadreamers · 14/02/2024 22:05

Our primary always strongly says “to wear a hint of a book character, if you wish to do so. There is no obligation to wear a costume.”
It’s a real mixed bag of homemade and bought costumes and no one cares either way.

Our town library also hosts a WBD costume swap where you can bring a clean, good condition costume and swap for another one. I also scour charity shops and Vinted.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/02/2024 22:05

Years ago DD's old school did a competition but costumes ready made from Asda and the like weren't allowed. She dressed as Winnie the Witch, denim dress and top all from primark with a home made hat. Her dad sorted it all out. Next year she dressed as princess Smartypants. Yellow t shirt, dungarees and trainers all from primark with a homemade crown. Her dad sorted it again. I think that is ok and do-able.

The film originates from a book anyway. It’s based (albeit loosely) on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen.

With the exception of Merida, I'm pretty sure all of them originated from books

Ah.. no I disagree with OP then. If they are in a book. Could even be the argos catalogue back in the day. Then they are a book character

MrsWidgerysLodger · 14/02/2024 22:08

DD's school have asked them to come in pajamas and bring a favourite bedtime story to talk about. Much prefer this idea to faffing about with costumes tbh!

That's worse. That puts pressure on working parents. Fine if they want the kids to sacrifice their maths homework to do it but they don't.

soundsys · 14/02/2024 21:30

Oh I would love this!

Mine are all going as witches (they've yet to decide which witch specifically) because they were witches at Halloween and already have the costumes (They do also have plenty of books with witches in between them!)

Mines going as a black cat for the same reason. It will be either slinky malinky, the cat from Meg, mog & owl, or one of the ones from mogs family of cats.

It's unfair on kids who haven't got decent pajamas. There will be some who sleep in holey pjs. And they might not own a bedtime story.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/02/2024 22:10

@10ThousandSpoons not really. We both worked full time. It's not hard to cobble together something from normal clothes.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/02/2024 22:11

And if kids don't own un-holey pj's or a bedtime story there are more serious issues going on.

I am, yes, but "Frozen" originates from a Fairytale, the snow queen. Pretty much every Disney film originates from an author's work. Very little is original.

So while I doubt every little Elsa on WBD is a lover of "The snow queen" it is still arguably a book and miles better than spiderman or bloody Del Boy! 😄
