I got caught out by gossiping. (Title edited by MNHQ by request of the OP)

My car is broken so today had to catch an Uber back home. Uber driver very chatty and I politely responded back to him. Once we got near my home he said he’s been here lots of times (a new development) and he asked me how it is and telling me how neighbours don’t chat to one another and I told him yes the neighbours not friendly at all, I should have stopped but I carried in with there’s a neighbour whose kid is in same class as my kid and they never even respond hello to me! I told him they so rude. We got close and he said the person he drops off every often lives at “number x”, he then asked my my number. The person I was gossiping about is his customer he picks up every day! How bloody odd, I have anxiety and will be thinking of him telling the other guy in passing or just commenting. They will know it’s me as it’s a small development. I’m such an idiot. He was so chatty and my boundaries just disappeared!

I’m so stupid I can’t believe how much identifying crap I told him. I even said something else which I can’t write here will be too identifying

They don't speak to you anyway, so it's not like you'll lose a friend.

Don't worry about it.

cerisepanther73 · 14/02/2024 16:18

It happens to the best of us @OMG1235

It might feel a bit arkward at first if you see that next door neighbour 🤔 out and about

I wouldn't worry about it

I think its very unprofessional of him to ask for your tel no
be quite valid to report about that to his company,
he sounds like he was trying to flirt with you

OMG1235 · 14/02/2024 16:23

@cerisepanther73 sorry I think I made a typo I meant my door number. He kept asking obviously to drop me off my door but I think he will definitely tell that guy. I’m so annoyed the rest of the 15 minute conversation was no drama just general chit chat but me the idiot had to do something last 2 mins of the journey.

MassageForLife · 14/02/2024 16:26

You didn't make a typo. It was clear that you meant your house number, as you had just said that the driver said the passenger lives at number x.

So what if he does say something? They can't deny it's the truth.

This. You were telling the truth what a strange thing to get so anxious about

Containerhome · 14/02/2024 16:33

I doubt he will tell them. Don't worry. And if he does... so what. They don't talk to you anyway. Its not a lie!

OMG1235 · 14/02/2024 16:33

The thing is we do say hello on the odd occasion, they’re not completely rude to me so it was not entirely true. I’m feeling extra emotional today and just drained. I don’t fully believe they’re rude on purpose they’re just busy whereas I do have more time in my hands as I work part time. So I think I was a little harsher and ruder about them than I would have been under other circumstances.

MassageForLife · 14/02/2024 17:00

Well, if they say anything, you've got a couple of options.

  1. apologise, and say you were having a bad day and that you felt bad after saying it
  2. say that the driver said people don't really talk, and you just agreed.

Or you could say that he got the wrong end of the stick - that you were saying that it wasn't friendly the last place you lived, but that the neighbours here say hi, and you appreciate it.

But I honestly don't think anything will come from it

OMG1235 · 14/02/2024 17:02

@MassageForLife thank you! I’m such an idiot. I’m too open with strangers.

OP posts:
CrimsonC · 14/02/2024 17:04

Surely it would be poor manners for him to tell them.

'So and so said your kid is rude'. Nobody wants to hear that. Reflects badly on him too.

lemonmeringueno3 · 14/02/2024 17:09

He probably won't say anything to your neighbour.

But if he does, so what? He'll say that you think they're a bit standoffish, and they are.

OMG1235 · 14/02/2024 17:10

@CrimsonC but I don’t think he clicked it was his customer I was talking about. I’m more worried he will say “I picked up a lady at number Y and she was telling me how rude the neighbours are and can you believe her kid is in class as another kid and parents don’t even talk”

ChanelNo19EDT · 14/02/2024 17:20

Try not to worry, the woman already blanks you! What is she going to do, start talking to you ??? Also I imagine the worst the user driver is going to say is "I picked up a woman who thinks her neighbours aren't friendly". I doubt he'll risk offending a regular!!

Imagine in as headline news. Woman tells uber driver her neighbour ignores her!".

Not holding the front page. (But I understand the anxiety!)

I mean this really kindly but that is too boring a story to repeat as an anecdote.

Neighbour at number 7 keeps snakes and one escaped. That is the kind of thing that gets remembered and repeated.

He probably filed it as "somebody isn't very friendly to somebody, right".

OMG1235 · 14/02/2024 17:54

@ChanelNo19EDT hopefully you’re right! It just seems bigger in my head cos of my anxiety

Christ it's the thread police! It wasn't clear at all it sounded like she gave him her number! Rambling prose right enough

Newchapterbeckons · 14/02/2024 18:18

Well hopefully your neighbours will see this as a cue to be more courteous! So maybe prompt better manners?! If not the stony silence will continue- nothing lost or gained.

i wouldn’t worry!! This is your anxiety - you only said the truth after all…

BlueGrey1 · 14/02/2024 18:19

I doubt he would tell him, most people wouldn’t
taxi drivers hear all sorts, I’m sure it wasn’t the most interesting thing he heard all day

Yummymummy2020 · 14/02/2024 18:26

I would be like you and worry about this op but as an objective outsider, please don’t! I doubt he will even remember you to tell tales on you and it probably won’t even come up in conversation. I would think it will be forgotten! Agree with the posters that say you won’t be at a loss even if he does say it! I’d try forget the whole thing to be honest, what’s done is done and out of your control, And it likely won’t go further than between you and him!

What are you on about?

I didn't even mention you, never mind police your post! The op said she made a typo. She didn't. I was responding to that - not to your post.

I'm as guilty as anyone of misreading things at times, I'm the last person to give someone else a hard time about it!

StockpotSoup · 14/02/2024 18:57

I find the idea that you expect to be friends with someone because you share a postcode quite odd anyway. But as others have said, if they don’t say hello to you, they’ll hardly take huge offence at you telling someone that.

OMG1235 · 14/02/2024 21:09

I’m still thinking about it! I can’t believe how much it’s playing on my mind!

I think it’s fairly normal to feel as you do about this

however, remember you only stated the reality of the situation. And what have you got to lose - the buggers don’t talk to you anyway!!
