Would you go somewhere just for a day out if it was a 2 hour drive away

With a five year old?
Two hours driving time each way, lunch/dinner there, a boat trip and hour long open top bus trip. Is it easily doable or too much stress?
Expensive to book a hotel and pay for dogs to go in a kennel at the moment

Yes! 2 hours isn’t really that long, if you get up and go early and come back after dinner time you’ll make the most of the day.

Hoplolly · 14/02/2024 09:09

Yep absolutely.

Dogdilemma2000 · 14/02/2024 09:09

Yes

Rivendeluge · 14/02/2024 09:09

Not for a boat trip and a bus ride. I would for an activity involving tiring them out, but yours sounds like more of sitting still which I think would have been too much for mine. 2 hours travel was my limit.

unicornsarereal72 · 14/02/2024 09:10

With my son yes he was a joy in the car. My daughter absolutely not.

JDJT · 14/02/2024 09:10

Hmm, we've done it with an 18 month old, and said never again. Depends how the 5 year old travels I suppose. How are they in the car?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/02/2024 09:10

Yes if the place I was going to would burn energy- I wouldn’t drive 4 hours and expect them to want to sit on a bus inbetween

Shoutingonthesekidsshows · 14/02/2024 09:10

To add, would prefer not to drive back in the dark too much 😬 so would have to leave by 4.30/5?
What time would you leave in the morning?
It feels rushed

OP posts:
TheBirdintheCave · 14/02/2024 09:10

Yeah we frequently do this with our three year old 😅

JDJT · 14/02/2024 09:11

That does sound rushed if leaving by 5ish latest.

Octavia64 · 14/02/2024 09:11

I have done it in the past. It is a very long day though.

I don't do it a lot.

WASZPy · 14/02/2024 09:11

You don't live rurally do you? For us, it's 2 hours just to make it to a city with a decent range of shops. We wouldn't think anything of 2hrs for a planned day trip.

Isthatarealname · 14/02/2024 09:11

We do this a lot with our 4 and 7 year olds

kellin · 14/02/2024 09:12

Yes 2 hours journey is fine. But the day sounds quite sedentary for the child - sitting in a car, sitting on a boat and sitting on a bus tour. I'd be doing something a bit more active.

SgtJuneAckland · 14/02/2024 09:13

Leave at 8 there by 10 , gives you seven hours there, which might even be too much, could even leave at nine to avoid traffic, get there for 11, six hours to do boat trip bus ride and lunch seems plenty. Home by seven.

Shoutingonthesekidsshows · 14/02/2024 09:13

It’s something Dh have done in the past without thinking about it, but usually go somewhere max one hour away if only for the day now
Boat trip is fairly quick, lots of walking around, lunch, some playgrounds & shops and the open top bus (which I think she’d enjoy, but an hour is long)
She’d be ok in the car for two hours

Shoutingonthesekidsshows · 14/02/2024 09:14

It’s whether we’d fit enough in or feel too rushed. It would save us a lot of money though if we didn’t stay over

OP posts:
confusedlots · 14/02/2024 09:14

Yeah I definitely would for a change of scenery. Always end up doing the ale th

confusedlots · 14/02/2024 09:15

Oops that posted too soon! Was going to say- always end up doing the same things with the kids locally. I'd have dinner there and then the 5 year old will probably have a snooze on the way home

crumblingschools · 14/02/2024 09:15

What are you doing with the dogs whilst you are out for the day?

Dara99 · 14/02/2024 09:16

Are they likely to take a danger nap in the car on the way home? My son would be out like a light at 4:30 if I put him in the car for 2 hours after a long day. I'd take a toothbrush and pyjamas. leave just before usual bedtime and carry straight up to bed when we got home. Saying that I quite like driving at night.

DappledThings · 14/02/2024 09:16

Yes, but I would make it a whole day. Stay out for dinner, drive home with DC in pyjamas and straight to bed. Leaving at about 5 with mine at that age would have been a surefire danger nap. I'm fine driving in the dark though.

DappledThings · 14/02/2024 09:17

Snap with @Dara99!

DelphiniumBlue · 14/02/2024 09:17

No, not for a boat trip and a bus ride. Too much sitting down for a 5 year old, mine wouldn’t have enjoyed that!

Dara99 · 14/02/2024 09:18

DappledThings · 14/02/2024 09:17

Snap with @Dara99!

The anxiety I get when I can see him nodding off in the car in the afternoon is so real 😅
