This ad keeps being shown to me.

Why is she wearing glasses in the pool? I'm a glasses wearer and have never done this or seen it.

It's really bothering me! Why didn't they ask the model to take them off if she was actually a glasses wearer?

I swim every week and always wear my glasses in the pool and loads do.. how am l suppose to see?
What a ridiculous comment.🤷‍♀️

jannier · 14/02/2024 11:24

Have to wear mine or wouldn't see my way back to the changing room or the people I'm with. I swim a couple of times a year so prescription googles are not a priority. Perhaps your eye sight isn't that bad or you would get it?

Redskyatwhatever · 14/02/2024 11:25

I’ve had a lifetime of wearing glasses while swimming and taking my kids I’ve had to sign disclaimers at water parks etc, off the shelf prescription goggles to -10 didn’t go anywhere near my actual prescription. How could you suggest it was safe to supervise a child in a pool when you couldn’t see properly, accidents happen in pools all the time just this week a child was rushed to hospital from a pool local to me and police are investigating. It’s incredibly ableist to suggest someone should hide a disability aid in an advert for fear of offending people. Maybe they chose the picture on purpose to show glasses dependant parents that they could still take their child swimming. Finally at age 62 I can go swimming without glasses after needing cataract eye surgery in both eyes. YAB so unreasonable

If getting wider coverage on social media is because she's wearing specs then that was a brilliant move from Swim England and their Duckling awards scheme.

They are designed to help toddlers enjoy learning to swim with help from their parents or guardians, with or without their bins on.

Talkamongstyourselves · 14/02/2024 12:05

Why didn't they ask the model to take them off if she was actually a glasses wearer?

They might have and she declined. Some of us actually prefer to wear glasses than end up with a face resembling a squinting mole in photos. The only times I ever remove mine is when I'm cleaning them, going to bed or if an eye exam.

KreedKafer · 14/02/2024 12:11

Eh? Loads of people need to wear their glasses in the pool. Because, you know, they literally can't see without them. At least one of my friends swims in her glasses and if my DP swam he would definitely need to wear his specs. He can't really do anything without them except sleep. If he's showering in an unfamiliar bathroom he has to wear his glasses in the shower.

Also, she's a mum taking a baby to swimming lessons. She's basically going to be standing there in the shallow end bobbing her baby up and down, so I think it's highly likely that she's not even going to be putting her head under the water.

InsidiousRasperry · 13/02/2024 22:31

This is like my friend who gets annoyed when she sees a bride wearing glasses 🥲

Your friend sounds like a dick!

KreedKafer · 14/02/2024 12:17

Mumsnet is hilarious. I stated that I wear glasses in the OP too avoid all the 'you must think glasses look silly/hate people who wear glasses' nonsense but nevermind.

I don't think anyone really said those things, though, did they?

PollyPeep · 14/02/2024 12:20

She's at a baby swim class where the adult doesn't actually put their head under the water or swim, you just walk lengths in a shallow pool while holding your baby.

Jxtina86 · 14/02/2024 12:22

I wear my glasses when I take DD in the pool - I feel really disorientated without them otherwise! If I was swimming on my own I wouldn't wear them but that's because I'm just going up and down one lane. With DD she's in and out the pool, down the slide etc so I need to keep an eye on her from a distance sometimes!

Havingawobbley · 14/02/2024 12:23

Bothering you?? 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

tealweasel · 14/02/2024 14:22

Another one here who wears glasses in the pool - I have prescription goggles for proper swimming but if I'm just taking my son for a splash around I'll just wear glasses. I can't get very far without them!

Herdinggoats · 14/02/2024 14:35

You can’t wear contacts when swimming, so unless you are swimming regularly enough to invest in the goggles then most people will swap to either their normal glasses or an old pair and put up with a slightly outdated prescription

WeeOrcadian · 14/02/2024 15:40

You need a hobby OP

I wear mine because I couldn't see my DC otherwise

I've found prescription goggles very reasonably priced on Amazon though, they're not brilliant but do work to a degree

Anyway, I've never ever seen it so thought it just made the picture look very fake, but interesting to hear that people do this! I would never as they'd become redundant very quickly with any splashes, don't want to risk damage etc. I can see rough shapes without them so can manage but would definitely go for proper goggles if I needed to. I still can't see how it's practical, but everyone is different.

No one said "you must think glasses look silly" or "hate people who wear glasses" so nevermind it is

mrsjareth · 14/02/2024 21:16

I'm just baffled as to why someone would see this advert and the first thing that came to their mind was "why didn't she take off her glasses"...why would she?! 🤯

LauderSyme · 14/02/2024 21:23

Have you ever taken your infant child into a pool OP?

I am short-sighted. When I'm alone in the pool and able to properly swim, I don't wear my glasses. But when ds was small and I took him, I did wear them because a/. I couldn't properly swim anyway and b/. I couldn't see him otherwise!

Amba1998 · 14/02/2024 21:25

Eh? She’s hardly deep see diving. She’s bobbing about with her baby. I wouldn’t take mine off either. I wouldn’t be able to see FA
