To think we have had an usually high number of police visits?

And this may be, in part, why the neighbour has it in her head that I am running some kind of hoarded crackhouse for teenagers?

In the last 2 or 3 years we've had them at the door once to return a lost phone, twice to return a lost bank card, once because I reported a crime, 2/3 times when DD1 was a victim of a crime, and twice when DD2 was witness to a crime (same crime with two visits to gather evidence/statements.)

It feels like there is a police car outside my house every few months.

If it means that any local scroats know the police are around they will either think your are right hard nuts and leave you alone or that it's not a good idea to be around as the police might turn up - winner on both counts.

BigDogEnergy · 13/02/2024 20:15

I had them here 4x last year, once related to a matter that I reported through work but they took my number down wrong, and 3x to inform me of sudden deaths of relatives. On all 3 occasions the same two officers 🙈

I had a police visit one Sunday afternoon recently and the officer said, Did you park in … street today?
I said, Er yes.
He said, You parked on the pavement.
I said, Did I? Oh sorry.
He said, I don’t care anyway
and walked off. 😐

None at all in the past 35 years we’ve been here.

ToHellBackAndBeyond · 13/02/2024 20:33

We have them here regularly, as well as ambulances outside and, more recently, fire tenders. The only surprising one was the body bag van but they were just fetching breakfast from the hot food place up the way. It's entertaining and there's always a variety of reasons. Keeps the curtain twitchers busy too 😁

We had two turn up a year ago. We’d been in a car accident (all fine) and it had activated my son’s Apple Watch. In the semi panic afterwards he hadn’t answered the call and so they turned up later that day to check we were ok. I was really impressed!
We’ve also had them turn up to ask if we’d seen a neighbour as her mum had done a welfare check call on her.
We also sadly had someone go missing in the woods behind our house and the police came twice to check all the gardens in the area and to ask us if we had seen anyone (we hadn’t)

I meant how would they get your address from a bank card?

Contacting the bank, presumably. Or just doing a search of the name.

I assume they looked up her name on their system and they had her details from when they wanted her as a witness.

Honestly, though, I have no clue. I didn't think to ask. Even though it's quite a common occurrence it's still a bit disconcerting to open the door to a uniformed police officer. She doesn't have a particularly unusual name.

That’s quite a lot! The police have been to our door 3 times since we’ve lived here (17 years). Once when we woke up to our car jacked up on bricks and once when DS was seriously assaulted at school. There was definitely another time as they sat young DS in the car and let him turn the blue lights on but I can’t remember what it was for.

herewegoagainy · 13/02/2024 22:11

It is a lot. In 30 years I have had the police at the door once as I reported a stolen handbag and once to ask if I had witnessed the armed robbery of the corner shop. So once ever 15 years.

Spaghettieis · 13/02/2024 22:16

I think that’s a lot. I’ve had them here twice in 5 years, once to ask whether I had witnessed a crime further up the street and once to ask for information about a neighbour they’d just arrested. I’ve also called them to do a welfare check on a neighbour but they didn’t drop round to me as well.

swapcicles · 13/02/2024 22:34

3 times, 2 to ask if I had witnessed assaults that happened close by - one I did see, the other not but was a neighbour.
The third was recently, opened the door to find a (presumably) housing officer and 3 officers (at least one police, the other two may have been specials but still) who were asking every flat about items that were left in the corridors as it was not allowed. She got quite stern about the bin bag outside my door which was only there until I went out later that day. Living in a flat you tend to empty bins when needed but not make a special journey to the bin stores especially in the dark or rain! Not quite sure it needed three of them tbh.

You should have heard the gossips around here when dh was asked to jump in the back of the police car and taken off with them- he had been shot at by someone with an air rifle and the police that came were unfamiliar with the rural area. They needed him to direct them!

Sodullincomparison · 13/02/2024 23:12

My husband got a call at 4am from the police looking for me. It was a major safeguarding concern about a young child and I was a headteacher at the time.

the next day I called them and asked how they tracked me down as it felt really strange that they found him. They have their ways…

doubleshift · 15/02/2024 22:04

Never had the police here. Not even when a car driving too fast left the road and crashed through our fence and ended up in the garden! Driver just left and got the car picked up by recovery the next day. Police not interested at all.

BrieAndChilli · 15/02/2024 22:09

I’ve had police at the door 3 times.
once when 2 year old DS went missing at the library, we were on the phone to the police when he was found so they came out later to do a ‘sight’ visit to check everything was ok
once when the empty house next door was broken into and all the copper piping stolen
and once when DH was assaulted to take a witness statement

manipulatrice · 15/02/2024 22:19

If your child was interviewed as a witness your details would've also been saved as the appropriate adult, hence why they found you on a name search on their local system. No big conspiracy there.

Nice that they returned the bank card. We usually drop them in at the bank, or give the owner a call and tell them to cancel it as it's been handed in as found property if we can find them on the system.
