In contrast to the sneeriness of the other thread, I hereby declare this chat is open for all lovers of design. What do we like? I'll go first: personality, actual knick knacks and pictures, comfortable sofas swathed with blankets, a thick rug for my toes. And stained glass in the entry way.

Grey.

(Just not a lot of it.)

Rich colours, lots of different textures, carpet. Curtains just below the sills so the radiators are not covered. Lots of books. Clean lines but lots of colour.

Plants in every room. They add life and clean the air. I love plants.

FeelinSpendy · 12/02/2024 19:44

Since you asked for dreams - a library with high ceilings, wall to wall bookcases with a rolling ladder, a fireplace and comfy sofas in which to curl up with a book. Oh, and a secret door!

I like strong colours, good lighting, and decor that responds to the house, its age, aspect etc, but I think I’m fussiest about the flow of space. Can you move around easily, or are you always crossing back on yourself, retracing your steps or having to move something out of the way? I don’t like anything that looks very interior-designed or straining after effect.

I love victorian tiled paths and hallways.
Nice wooden front doors with stained glass and Doctor's knockers (ooh-err).
Houses with serving hatches that haven't been closed up.
Coloured bathroom suites such as avocado or peachy pink.
Dado rails.

My house is minimalist. No clutter, empty kitchen tops. We don't eat toast regularly, so it's in a cupboard. I've got a navy kitchen. Took out my bath and put a proper shower unit in. Removed chimney breasts and radiators. Mural on the wall, the one attached. I took it to a paint mixing shop and my walls are the vivid green. Mid oak doors everywhere. Did similar in every room. Plantation shutters. L shape couches and useful side tables are the only things in the room. I've got spider plants on my window ledges. It's easy clean, but colourful.

Jewel colours and different texture fabrics.

I'd love a reading room in the stay of those country manor houses, rally ceilings huge fireplace, wall to ceiling book cases, two large sofas. And so on

A fireplace with a real fire. Plants, candles. 100s of cookbooks in the kitchen.

Pretty much this.

What’s a doctor’s knocker?!
Do you mean one of those brass lion heads?

It’s like a handle you lift and knock.

Just googled. Yes, they’re nice. Prefer the lion’s head, though Grin

Oh, I agree with you OP, but I like to keep everything in one color paletter, because an abundance of various colors is tiring. Tbh my guily pleasure is to create projects of my dream house via an interior design software and I could do that for hours 😂I've been into green and spacious designs lately, and these definitely don't include bookshelves 😆

Anycrispsleft · 13/02/2024 06:22

There was a house in Love It or List It a few years ago - think it was up north somewhere - detached stone house, and it was decorated all in autumny green, orange and yellow tones and it was absolutely gorgeous. It looked as if every bit of furniture and picture had been chosen with care and it was all different but fit together. I was like "please Love it, you have to love it!"

Jook · 13/02/2024 08:11

I can spend weeks choosing paint colours and I’m a fool for the pricey brands. Recently discovered Fenwick and Tillbrook paints - based in Norwich but next day delivery. I was in painty heaven! Palettes are themed around the Norfolk coast and they look brilliant painted on.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 13/02/2024 08:28

I have a Victorian terrace and I love almost everything about it but the hall is narrow with no room for anything so my dream is a generous hallway.

Off street parking would be nice too and an upstairs WC at least. I'd also like a garden makeover (rear and front).

LoobyDop · 13/02/2024 08:50

If I was building from scratch I’d have a boot room, utility room, yoga studio and library, arranged around a sunny courtyard. And a pantry, but that would be elsewhere. Probably on the inside of the kitchen.

I am drawn to warm colours (reds, oranges and terracotta). I love natural wood.

We are on the same page. My sitting room is terracotta, the chairs are a russet tone velvet, the cushions are complimentary patterns. We have polished floors and a big rug. Wooden alcove shelving. It’s an old cottage, there are some original features. We had to change the fireplace in the sitting room as it was a plain replacement surround. We’ve gone for simple classic stone fireplace that’s not quite like similar houses in the village that have original.

The aim with the fireplace was to provide a focal point for vintage vases and more modern sculptural items. I love vintage finds and contemporary art as a mix. DH has worked in Japan and China, so there are some things from that part of the world in our decor choices - Chinese vases, cherry blossom prints in the hallway.

I thing I absolutely have to have is storage. In an old property that’s quirky shaped, that’s sometimes a bit tricky. The DCs bedroom is narrow. To create desk space we had to lose a cute chest of drawers in an alcove. But it made us notice that there was space for seating and storage at the foot of his bed. It’s a pop up Ottoman bench, modern but neutral. My home office is in a different bedroom corner and we have deployed an Ottoman beside the bed in there which stores clothing that’s not current season and somehow fools the eye into thinking the walls are straight. That straitening of the wall helps me focus when sitting at the desk.
