After all these interior design threads this is what I'm imagining everyone on mumsnets homes look like. Just curious if I'm way off because iv never been in a home like this. Maybe if the person is in their 80s. Do people really have bookshelves?

I live in a little council flat painted brought colours, full of charity shop furniture, and five bookshelves full of books (and some DVDs)
There's more books in the wardrobe.
Living room is mostly toys and books and the sewing machine.
Not fancy, not new, not tidy!

:) Love it

staherts · 12/02/2024 15:53

We have many bookshelves, plus stacks of books in various rooms to put on shelves whenever we get around to it. Plus a lot of children’s books stored in various ways - floor holders, wall displays, lined up on chest of drawers. Sometimes I wonder what our cleaner makes of us having stacks of books (some which are more than a metre high) in pretty much every room. It must look odd.

Our house doesn’t look like those pictures. It’s got lots of things mumsnet hates - bifold doors, big island, big corner sofa (as well as lots of vintage furniture and original art).

If you're reading more than two books a day I'm not sure you're doing much dissecting at all.

Are they Ladybird books?

Nope, at the moment re-reading the Giordano Bruno series

No, not everyone has bookshelves or even books.

It's one of the reasons for bookstart, and why Dolly Parton set up a charity to give a book to every child.

Kids don't read if it isn't normal for their household and there aren't any books. There are plenty of households like that, although most houses with kids do have some kids books as the message has been getting out there that books are important.

It's also why most schools have a library - for the kids who have literally no books at home.

The effects of generational illiteracy and low levels of literacy in the part of the world where Dolly Parton grew up are harrowing. Books and the education they allow access to are the way out of the grinding poverty of the hollers of Appalachia and all the equivalent communities worldwide. Her initiative is incredibly important.

absolutely love it

BCBird · 12/02/2024 15:56

Nothing like it. Bookshelf in spare room. No squishy sofas. Untidy.

Crumpleton · 12/02/2024 15:56

I don't have a library room but yes, I do have a few Billy bookcases.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 12/02/2024 15:56

We certainly do have bookshelves, in the room we call our office we have 6 billy bookcases, with extension top shelves filled with books. In the lounge I have a basket with a few books, in the bedroom both bedside tables have the current books and those next in the queue! I did get asked if my bookshelves were a faux background once. We love our books but the majority in our office / den. Last count about 800 books, fact and fiction.

murasaki · 12/02/2024 15:57

Dolly Parton is a legend re her reading initiative. And for part funding the Moderna vaccine. Her tales of her childhood are shocking and she is a force for good.

Yes we have bookshelves (with books on!), no our house does not resemble those pictures.

Yea is there a middle ground?! Yes I have books and shelves for them to live on lol. No my house does not have a fancy library style room Grin

I’m an exceptionally quick reader and normally get through 300 - 500 books in a year. I wanted to see if it was possible to do 1,000. Wouldn’t do that again, as having the target made it into more of a chore than enjoyment.

That's almost three books a day?! Arethey picture books?
I'm a fast reader but this seems completely unbelievable.

My house doesn't look like that, but I do have many many bookcases, all crammed with books....

Ditto, I'd love a room like that with all those bookcases! I have plenty of bookcases but not the stylishness,

WoahWannaDanceWithNoBody · 12/02/2024 15:41

I have shelves with books on them, yes. Where else should I put my books?

I have some between bookends on the floor...

aitchteeaitch · 12/02/2024 16:01

I don't have multiple bookshelves, just the one, and it does look a bit like that, yes. Stuffed full and untidy though, and with a 2-foot pile of more books on the floor beside it. If I had the space for a study, it would be lined with bookshelves.

OpalOrchid · 12/02/2024 16:01

My house is made entirely from books. That's how clever and MC I am.

WoahWannaDanceWithNoBody · 12/02/2024 16:03

mathanxiety · 12/02/2024 16:00

I have some between bookends on the floor...

I have piles of them by my bed which then serve as handy coffee tables for phones and snacks...

Damaged27 · 12/02/2024 14:50

I do, they have books in their rooms we read stories before bed every night. I just don't like them in other parts of the house displayed it just looks cluttered to me

It doesn't look cluttered, not having bookshelves makes you look not very intelligent. Yes I know many people use e readers but there are so many out of print/academic books that are not available on e readers, or clunky to read in that format.
It is also really important for children to have access to a large variety of physical books.

TellySavalashairbrush · 12/02/2024 16:03

I am an avid reader but don’t have book shelves . I use my kindle or borrow from the library. If I was wealthy I’d probably have a study/reading room with lots of shelves of books .

usedtobeasizeten · 12/02/2024 16:05

I read a lot, I’m also in a book club….no bookshelves.

OceanicBoundlessness · 12/02/2024 16:06

We have no wall space so whilst we have lots of books I have one small bookshelf in the kitchen. (Large kitchen so no where near where cooking happens) and a small bookshelf in my bedroom with a double pile of books in front that I step over getting in and out of bed and often lose small items amongst.

My teens all have books in their rooms though they're all heavily curated to be those that they think are cool.

Their childhood books are stashed away in the attic for grandkids.

Cosycover · 12/02/2024 16:06

My house is nothing like that. Even the pics make me claustrophobic.

I do have lots of books. But in cupboards.

Edited

No, not picture books. I’m a fast reader and had a long commute.

As a guide, it takes me about 15 minutes to read a full length Agatha Christie book (which is obviously shorter than most modern novels), 45 minutes to an hour to read most modern full-length novels. I generally read 1-2 books a day.

drowninginsick · 12/02/2024 16:07

Thing is op we tend to socialise with people similar to ourselves. So your friends/family probably have similar styles and interests.

I'm v. Sporty, DH is v. Sporty, lots of our friends are the same, we would think nothing of having sports stuff left out or gym bags stacked visible, a friend has bikes and snowboard mounted on the wall. To some people that would be absurd but we're all used to it, you just get used to what you see a lot.

Lots of people have books and bookshelves though and usually it's just the genre or content that varies, are you quite young? I think once you get out in the world a bit more and see a different variety of houses it's more common to have books on shelves than not tbh

So you have bookshelves to make yourself look intelligent ok 🤣🤣. Do you actually like them or is it just to show people your intelligent.
